Things that you're supposed to like, but don't.

What things/foods/activities etc that are supposedly good for you, healthy or "improving" do you dislike?

I really hate being read to, and I hate reading to people. I never particularly enjoyed being read to as a child, though I appreciate that my Mother did so but I think it was a relief to both of us when I was able to read a book by myself. I also don't enjoy reading to people though I used to have to do so when I worked in childcare and as a volunteer role that involved reading aloud. I've no children yet but if I do I can't say that reading to them will be one of my favourite activities.

Walking. I hate walking for the sake of it. I can happily clock up a lot of miles walking through cities and towns when I'm shopping or seeing the sights. Or if there's a lot of wildlife to admire on a country walk, but I don't enjoy walking as an activity. If I go for a walk for the sake of walking I'm aware of every bloody step and find it boring.

Camping: I love nature and wildlife but I much prefer to admire it and then return to a comfortable bed with solid walls and a sturdy roof over my head. Each to their own but I've tried it once and it was hell. Never again.

Dark chocolate. I don't mind a thin layer of dark chocolate with a mint or caramel filling, but I can't eat dark chocolate on its own. I don't care how good it is for you or how unsophisticated it makes me, it is so unpleasantly bitter that I can't enjoy it. I'll stick with milk chocolate.

There's probably more but that will do for now.

Weddings - particularly ones of people I don't really know or like, I'd rather not be invited

Camping - take a holiday in a residence that's less nice than your actual home, clean your teeth whilst a stranger takes a shit behind you! No ta

UK holidays - full of the kind of parents I don't like. All trying to out do each other in competitive parenting

Children - can't stand them, they're only cute and funny to their own parents

Raw tomatoes.
I don't understand how anyone likes them. They are fine cooked or tinned. But fresh tomatoes are the devil's work.

Cream
Milk in tea - tastes utterly vile to me
Goat’s cheese
Spa days and so-called ‘pampering’ - not to me it isn’t.
The very word ‘pampering’
Fennel
White chocolate - the work of Satan
People who don’t like dogs

AvonBarksdale99 · 18/04/2020 08:58

Tea - A warm, weird tasting beige drink, wow. I mean, it’s fine I guess but the whole ‘Ooh lets have a cup of tea’ ‘oh I’d kill for a cup of tea right now’ ‘ooh I’m gasping for a cuppa’ You just sound like an idiot to me. Have you actually tried a nice drink? Freshly squeezed orange juice in a glass with ice is a drink that actually tastes good and is a pleasant experience.

Christmas - Absolutely fair enough if you’re a child or you have a young family and you’re getting to experience that for the first time or few times but if you’re 21-31 and childless then you’ve experienced Christmas multiple, multiple times and guess what - it’s exactly the same every year. Same music, same style decorations, same films, same Christmas market, same carols... at least with summer you might get a new summer hit song that’s on the radio, or go to a new holiday destination. I don’t mind people who enjoy the specific things eg going to a Christmas market with friends, but people who LOVE Christmas and just get unreasonably excited every year - IT’S THE SAME AS LAST TIME AND NEXT TIME

Indian food/Curry - Vague hunks of very cheap, poor quality meat in brightly coloured, garish sauce. So hot and spicy it overpowers any flavour or nuance. But again the worst part for me is the obsession some people have with it. It’s not the same with, say, fish and chips - if someone doesn’t want that or doesn’t like it no-one cares, but Curry is basically an obsession with some people, and saying you don’t like it is like you’ve said you don’t like breathing, they’re baffled and astounded. Any work trip/stag or hen do/family meal someone is going to suggest getting a curry.

Films! I don't know what it is but I hate films I find loads of things funny I could happily watch Micky Flanagans live tour for an hour and 45 minutes but an hour long film? No

Mrsjayy · 18/04/2020 09:01

Charity shops they have a musty smell, and the thought of wearing second hand clothes make me feel queasy Blush

BlueMoonRising · 18/04/2020 09:07

I'm probably going to get slated for this one.

But talented children whose parents fail to keep them grounded, and they become smug (smug might not be the right word, but certainly over-confident) individuals that think the whole world will love them because they have always been told that. Maybe it's the parents I hate more, because all I see is someone that has hard life lessons ahead and they've been so cosseted that it could and probably will hit them really hard. I can't bear to watch them sing /play /whatever it is they do as a result.

I love watching talented people of any age, but I can't bear that specific subgroup.

Leflic · 18/04/2020 09:13

Camp men - Gayness doesn’t bother me but I can only tolerate men without the OTT behaviour.
Tea.
Fruit - berries are ok but most other things are too wet and cold.
Massages and hairdressers - makes my spine literally tingle but not in a good way.

Another loving lockdown. Whole days of zero pressure to anything. Appreciate that if I had to work or had young children it would be a different story.

Overseasmom100 · 18/04/2020 09:13

Gin

ChicChicChicChiclana · 18/04/2020 09:15

My absolute pet hate is people who write paragraphs and paragraphs of detail on lighthearted threads like this. No one reads them and no one cares.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 18/04/2020 09:16

Getting my hair cut, how anyone can tolerate it, let alone enjoy it, is beyond me. I like how it looks after but sitting there while they fiddle with it makes me cringe. The massage is the worst part.

bullyingadvice2017 · 18/04/2020 09:16

Enforced hugging. Stop touching me, Loving it atm.

Popper inners. It take 1 minute to call or txt, there's a reason I ignore the door. If you call first I will welcome you with open arms, if not. No answer, get with the programme mother!

Christmas. The forced fun, if I guenuenly liked the people, i would surely make the effort to see them all year round.

Weddings..christening... hen dos.. baby showers........all just yawn

Other people's children....

Rewy · 18/04/2020 09:19

Are you including the op in that? 😂

rookiemere · 18/04/2020 09:21

Oh gosh yesismyrightname I actually feel sick at the hairdressers if they try that head massage thing, then it's really embarrassing to say I don't like it so I overtip so they don't think I'm weird.

Deathraystare · 18/04/2020 09:21

It's weird but for such a somewhat cantankerous old bat there isn't much in the should like but don't.

I don't like some veg (was vegetarian, now pescatarian). It is the root veg. Will put up with carrots but Kohl rabi , swede, turnip, parnip and jerusalem artichoke - ugh!

vampirethriller David Atenbourough? You have convinced to not liking him on mumsnet and live to tall the tale????!!!

Deathraystare · 18/04/2020 09:22

That should be Attenborough and confessed not convinced!

Neveranynamesleft · 18/04/2020 09:24

Christmas dont know where to start with this one. Cheap tat, stupid decorations everywhere, same music EVERY year , presents I do not want or need and please just dont shove it down my throat for 6 months of the year. You celebrate a birthday on one day. One.
Mindfulness just crap, huggy huggy shite.
Beaches for walking along with a dog or children. Why people would want to take all their clothes off ( yuk ) and then lie down there on the dirty sand just baffles me. Do that on the pavement in the high street and see what happens.
Big parties/ gatherings no thanks, why would I force myself to make polite conversation with people I cant stand. Or who cant stand me come to think of it.
Chatting to neighbours over the fence / wall why would I force myself to make polite conversation with people I cant stand.
