Things that you're supposed to like, but don't.

What things/foods/activities etc that are supposedly good for you, healthy or "improving" do you dislike?

I really hate being read to, and I hate reading to people. I never particularly enjoyed being read to as a child, though I appreciate that my Mother did so but I think it was a relief to both of us when I was able to read a book by myself. I also don't enjoy reading to people though I used to have to do so when I worked in childcare and as a volunteer role that involved reading aloud. I've no children yet but if I do I can't say that reading to them will be one of my favourite activities.

Walking. I hate walking for the sake of it. I can happily clock up a lot of miles walking through cities and towns when I'm shopping or seeing the sights. Or if there's a lot of wildlife to admire on a country walk, but I don't enjoy walking as an activity. If I go for a walk for the sake of walking I'm aware of every bloody step and find it boring.

Camping: I love nature and wildlife but I much prefer to admire it and then return to a comfortable bed with solid walls and a sturdy roof over my head. Each to their own but I've tried it once and it was hell. Never again.

Dark chocolate. I don't mind a thin layer of dark chocolate with a mint or caramel filling, but I can't eat dark chocolate on its own. I don't care how good it is for you or how unsophisticated it makes me, it is so unpleasantly bitter that I can't enjoy it. I'll stick with milk chocolate.

There's probably more but that will do for now.

Carol Voderman. Nothing personal Carol but you just wind me up.

gingerbreadslice · 18/04/2020 09:27

Dark chocolate also I can't stand it. I think olives are foul and I hate Gin

Acidrain · 18/04/2020 09:28

Dressing gowns, hate them, uncomfortable, to hot or to cold, not for me - much prefer a fluffy jumper!

AvonBarksdale99 · 18/04/2020 09:29

@ChicChicChicChiclana my pet hate is people who post about their pet hates on a thread which is actually about ‘things you’re supposed to like, but don’t’ 😉

MsMiaWallace · 18/04/2020 09:30

Other people's children.....

Our neighbours. I don't want them knowing anything about us!

Love Island.... just don't get it?

Work social events, leaving do's, fuddles etc.
I spend enough bloody time (usually) at work I don't need to dedicate my social life to it.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 18/04/2020 09:31

@rookiemere Yes! They never ask if you want it, just commence their assault and I don't know how to say stop. I mentioned this to my non British husband once and he asked why I don't just ask them not to do it. He finds it so weird that I can't tell them!

Equimum · 18/04/2020 09:33

Tea
Reality TV shows
Parties
Clothes shopping

LightenUpSummer · 18/04/2020 09:33

This is like a huge list of all the good things in life! Well, except Love Island, but I haven't seen it so might love it (seems unlikely)

'Grown up' things I don't like: opera, jazz, whisky. That's it!

Lifeaback · 18/04/2020 09:36

Musicals
Tea
Full English breakfasts
Any food that’s considered ‘hearty’- I hate with a passion stews, casseroles, Shepard’s pie etc
Mashed potato
Prosecco- horrible fizzy cheap tasting stuff

I had no idea so many people hated getting their hair done! I love anything pamper-y and love the feeling of someone else washing my hair

gingerbreadslice · 18/04/2020 09:42

@Acidrain But jumpers don't have pockets I love the beauty of a dressing gown pocket you put something in there, then forget about it until you put it on again. I found a creme egg in mine the other day still wrapped ConfusedGrin

Nameandgamechange123 · 18/04/2020 09:52

The theatre. Just so boring. Can't understand why people put themselves through it!

squeekums · 18/04/2020 09:52

Walking for nothing, I have to be going somewhere, have a purpose. Exercise is not a purpose. Shopping and sightseeing are lol
I'm an Aussie who despises seafood, as good as criminal here not to eat prawns at Christmas
Hugging as a greeting outside immediate family
Chilli and avocado, its bloody everywhere.
So called blockbuster, everyone supposedly watches tv like game of thrones, stranger things type shows, can't get into them

Clevererthanyou · 18/04/2020 09:58

Music. In all forms. I’ll have the radio on as company in the kitchen but I won’t give a fuck if this or that band is playing and I genuinely don’t understand the snobbery/obsession that generally comes with loving music.
Spending time with family- other than my husband and my son Id really rather not.

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 18/04/2020 09:58

Massage the thought makes me want to throw up or someone stroking my hair. My ex used to touch my hair on purpose to make me squirm. I also don't like sex but that's to do with him too.

Dancing is another one I wish I liked it but I just feel stupid.

Mucklowe · 18/04/2020 10:02

Feature films.

People wank on about how great they are, but I've never found a film that wasn't a waste of two good hours. I'd rather read a book.

Ploughingthrough · 18/04/2020 10:07

Dogs
Coffee
Running. I enjoy many forms of exercise but I cannot get past the boredom of running.

LittleMissBumFun · 18/04/2020 10:09

People

katseyes7 · 18/04/2020 10:10

@UkuleleRose Thank goodness it's not just me! lt drives me mad when you're having a rough day and people say "Have a glass of wine!"

Rhapsodyinpurple · 18/04/2020 10:14

Venues where the music is too loud and you can't hear conversation.

Gigs where all you can see is the people stood up in front of you and all you can hear is the people around you singing.

Swimming baths, especially the changing room with a wet soggy floor, other people's hair and the odd plaster etc lying around. Grim, just grim.

madroid · 18/04/2020 10:22

All those talent show TV programmes like Britain's got talent and strictly dancing. I can't stand all the shouty presenters, shouty audiences and shouty overexcited contestants. Also the faux sob stories. They make me cringe and irritate me.

And hyperbole. I catch.myself doing it often. It's a modern disease. Everything is incredible or fantastic or awesome rather than enjoyable, interesting or amusing. It's all such overblown stress language it makes me feel a bit overwrought just to hear it.

Not dogs - dog owners. Entitled, aggressive, inconsiderate, selfish, limited of intellect.

nuitdesetoiles · 18/04/2020 10:27

Christmas
Other people's children
Skiing and snowboarding
Pantomime
Zoom/facetime/skype
Large groups of women in any form

MasterMargarita · 18/04/2020 10:30

Theatre
Beer
Wine
Shopping with other people
Avocados
Going out for drinks

On the subject of hairdressers massaging your head, I dislike it so I tell them not to bother. I don't feel weird saying it and I haven't come across a single hairdresser who raised their eyebrow at that. I don't think they particularly enjoy giving it to their customers either! Just say something if you don't want one!

katseyes7 · 18/04/2020 10:35

Cats. My best friend has three. Every time l see her she tells me about every small creature they've brought in and either killed or tormented.
Now we're in lockdown she's taken to emailing me to tell me about it. Photos included.
Now don't get me wrong, l love animals. But l couldn't have a cat for that reason. l couldn't bear to find half dead or half eaten mice or birds in my house.
She's an avid bird feeder too, which in turn, attracts mice. So the cats have a ready supply of prey.
Also, (not hers) they come in my garden, shit in my borders (in one case, on the gravel at the side of the house - this one doesn't even bother to bury it - just drops it and buggers off) and scare my rabbits.
l once caught one in the garden with a live bird in it's mouth. The bird was screaming and the cat went in the big conifer. Awful.

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 18/04/2020 11:06

Summer and hot weather
Social media and the trends / fads that comes with it
Reality tv
Meditation
Shopping

For a lot of my younger years I felt out of step with everyone my age because they all love those things but as I've got older it doesn't bother me as much.

blancheduboiss · 18/04/2020 11:11

My Mother in Law. Grin With good reason, mind you.
