Things that you're supposed to like, but don't.

What things/foods/activities etc that are supposedly good for you, healthy or "improving" do you dislike?

I really hate being read to, and I hate reading to people. I never particularly enjoyed being read to as a child, though I appreciate that my Mother did so but I think it was a relief to both of us when I was able to read a book by myself. I also don't enjoy reading to people though I used to have to do so when I worked in childcare and as a volunteer role that involved reading aloud. I've no children yet but if I do I can't say that reading to them will be one of my favourite activities.

Walking. I hate walking for the sake of it. I can happily clock up a lot of miles walking through cities and towns when I'm shopping or seeing the sights. Or if there's a lot of wildlife to admire on a country walk, but I don't enjoy walking as an activity. If I go for a walk for the sake of walking I'm aware of every bloody step and find it boring.

Camping: I love nature and wildlife but I much prefer to admire it and then return to a comfortable bed with solid walls and a sturdy roof over my head. Each to their own but I've tried it once and it was hell. Never again.

Dark chocolate. I don't mind a thin layer of dark chocolate with a mint or caramel filling, but I can't eat dark chocolate on its own. I don't care how good it is for you or how unsophisticated it makes me, it is so unpleasantly bitter that I can't enjoy it. I'll stick with milk chocolate.

There's probably more but that will do for now.

I hate Christmas with a passion. The greed, the waste, the grotesque throwaway consumerism, the enforced socialising with relatives you dislike, the rubbish on TV, the same tired, old boring crappy music every bloody year.

Christmas should be like the World Cup or the Olympics. Once every four years would be much more tolerable.

BikeRunSki · 18/04/2020 18:10

@AgeLikeWine, the running around trying to make everyone else happy whilst exhausting myself.

Christmas in Leap Years Only please!

Fleamaker123 · 18/04/2020 18:21

I hesitated slightly before saying Christmas.. It's a bit taboo to say you don't actually enjoy it!

Talking if the Oplymics, that's another of those things people are meant to love. I find it all deathly dull.

I’ve been told for years my palate would mature and I’d like these things when I’m older. Nearly 40 and I still don’t like them!

SuckingDownDarjeeling · 18/04/2020 19:34

Teenagers! I feel like people believe they're 'developing minds with oodles of potential' but I find they make me cringe. Like, I'll walk down a different aisle if there are a couple of them in a supermarket (before lockdown). I make them sound like infestations 😂 but there's just so much about teenagers I can't stand shudders

Rainbowb · 18/04/2020 19:56

My friend’s dd. She has her own Youtube channel and in case you were daring to ignore that, there are endless videos of her singing, dancing and delivering scarily excitable squeaky stage monologues complete with shamelessly boastful hashtags telling us all she’s a #childmodel #trailblazer etc. She gets loads of positive comments so I’m obviously alone in thinking she’s a precocious brat who has no real fun.....

Swing music such as Frank Sinatra and even worse contemporary singers who cover this genre.

Neighbours - why do you have to be best friends just cos you live near each other? Weird.

MrNobody · 18/04/2020 20:50

I've only recently realised how much I don't like reading to my children!

But if I do it in a different accent I think I read more fluently. My girls don't like being read to in an accent though.

I seem to be a bit stuttery and read the wrong words out. I do wonder if my losing my near vision!

I'd rather now talk about their day and leave the reading before bed to their dad.
