Anyone else gone from slim to fat very quickly?

Since Christmas I've been letting go a bit but sorted it without weighing myself etc in Feb. Since then I've gone downhill again and just realised for the first time today - I am really overweight.

What prompted me to check this afternoon is my face. It didn't feel right, felt all funny at the chin. I can literally FEEL a double chin now when I look at my phone etc.

Took a selfie with DS just now and bang, double chin galore!

Anyone else gone from slim to fat suddenly? I'm usually a firm size 10 and 5'4 in height. I am now a 12 or smaller 14.

Rahhh! Need to get back on track Sad it's so depressing.

I recovered from at eating disorder in my early teens so have to be careful.

Oh Trap, I’d be mortified if I had to go back, my weight gain recently is vv noticeable. Especially my face and lower back, waist has completely disappeared.Blush. Have been good this week, I just need be have some self discipline.

Please don't use BMI if you are concerned about your size. It doesn't distinguish fat from muscle or consider distribution at all and a focus on this as a measure is quite problematic. A lean but muscular athlete could have an obese BMI because muscle is more dense than fat (i.e. an ok looking size but still heavy).
There's also quite an issue with the sheer range of 'healthy' weight according to height but less so than BMI.

Xenia · 16/04/2020 22:14

You can use the NHS waist measurement -for women over 31.5 inches is a problem www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/lifestyle/why-is-my-waist-size-important/

I know what you mean, but I think for your average person (ie not exceptionally muscular, not very small, not very tall) it's a reasonable guide to aim for the middle of your BMI or below. Agree that fat distribution is also important, but the BMI calculator is a reasonable guide for your average person.

Raffathebear · 17/04/2020 02:42

Its one thing having a chubby face that shows any weight gain and quite another saying a 12 or even 14 is 'very fat'.

You have a naturally chubby, fleshy face.

Trapordo · 17/04/2020 07:59

Raffa But again, a 14 can mean obese for some women... Height is all relevant. My mum is 13.5 stone and about 5 foot 1. She's classed obese and she is, and will be straight up and tell you herself.

Sometimes the truth really does hurt. But it's important to be honest otherwise you lie to yourself.

Oh and I don't have a naturally chubby face. When I'm a healthy weight for me height, it's very slim

BMI is accurate for your average woman. Because most of us aren't any type of athlete or sports person. You don't really get so much muscle that it would impact your BMI unless you are serious about fitness or do some sort of training making you muscly

It's all relative isn't it. I certainly don't agree with the whole 'some people would love to be a size 12, it's rude and offensive to say otherwise' etc etc.

I am very petite. My wardrobe is 8/10, I've put on a stone and a half and I am now very flabby and feel horrible. To be between 9.7-10 stone is too big FOR ME. I can feel it in my thighs and middle and around my chin.

Whilst a size 14 might be fine for many people, it's not for me.

MashedSpud · 17/04/2020 08:17

Because of your previous ED be cautious and just make small changes to your diet so not to get triggered. Walk more, drink water and add more veg to your meals.

The pandemic isn’t helping things and it’s easy to distract yourself by focusing on weight loss so be careful.

Gwynfluff · 17/04/2020 08:20

I’ve always run to fat very easily. But some naturally slim people I’ve met have found a point where they suddenly do put on weight, assume it’s a change in metabolic factors.

Orchidflower1 · 17/04/2020 08:21

I’d give you a 🍰Biscuit but you’d probably not eat it.
🤷🏽‍♀️
I really do think you’re way off the mark op. Your thread your choice but if that’s all you got to worry about right now then bully for you.
You’re not fat. You’re being insensitive and hurtful.

puds11 · 17/04/2020 08:33

Oh the irony @Orchidflower1

ContessaferJones · 17/04/2020 08:34

I sympathise OP: I dropped down to pretty much my target weight in a few months last year, but have spent the past 9 months putting it all back on Sad it has got to the point where I'm deliberately sitting here 9n clothes that are too small for me in an effort to kick myself into weight loss mode. It's easy when I'm in the zone but I can't quite get back into it yet!!

Jenasaurus · 17/04/2020 08:40

I have today started a diet due to comfort eating for most of lockdown. I call it the Lockdown Load. I havent weighed myself but looking at my belly and getting breathless going up and down the stairs, I realise I have to take action.

Kbear · 17/04/2020 08:44

Hi - I think we're all piling on the pounds in lockdown - I can't imagine putting my jeans on at the moment !!

Step away from the biscuits and snacks - if you can head out for a power walk every day that will help physically and mentally

Have a look at some keep fit online - maybe yoga too

Lots we can all do at home to fight the flab

Good luck

I'll be doing this too - starting today!!

MandalaYogaTapestry · 17/04/2020 08:54

Oh come on Orchid. It is not unreasonable to feel fat at size 12 if that's how it feels at one's body. I am quite tall and very sporty, size 10 and even I notice if I gain weight. I can show you pictures of fitness models with huge buttsz probably size 14, but they will be all muscle (due to steroids in many cases but that's a different topic). They would still look lean and healthy.

However, if the jump from size 10 to size 12 manifests itself in wobbly stomach, expanded bum and pudgy cheeks then it is not a distorted perception, it is actually extra fat. And it is completely reasonable to not be happy about it and look at ways at getting back to your usual weight at which you like the way you look.

It is a risky way of thinking that oh, it's no problem going from 8 to 10. Then going to 12. Then oh, the average woman's size in the UK is 14 so it's fine too. Or is it now 16? Then it's OK as well. See how it can get out of hand?

MandalaYogaTapestry · 17/04/2020 09:02

PS. OP, i don't mean that you have wobbly thighs etc., just used these as an example of how unwanted gained weight might look :) Speaking of myself, I notice it very quickly. Best of luck with your plan.

TriangleBingoBongo · 17/04/2020 09:06

OP I’m shorter than you and 7lb is a dress size so I get where you are coming from.

Slim for me is a 10 bottom, 8 top. As soon as I get to a 12 I look dumpy.

I can put on weight quite easily. Lockdown not helping!

PhoneLock · 17/04/2020 09:14

You’re not fat. You’re being insensitive and hurtful.

You will hate me. I feel fat if I go up 9 stone and a size 8.

PhoneLock · 17/04/2020 09:15

to 9 stone

Funkytowns · 17/04/2020 09:18

We are so used to seeing overweight people that we are blind to it. Being overweight isn’t healthy. I’m at the top end of a healthy BMI and to look at me I’m still carrying a lot of excess fat. I’m size 12 and 5’5”. Vanity sizing means I would probably be an old size 14.

WellTidy · 17/04/2020 09:32

Yes, I put in a lot of weight quickly, but I’m in the process of losing it.

I am 5 foot 1, with a naturally small build. I put on nearly two stone in a year, taking me from a petite 12 to a tubby 14. At my heaviest, I was 10st 12lb. Which is probably lighter than many women, but with my height and frame, I was overweight.

I am now 9st 13lb and I am still overweight. Proper folds of fat and bulges. I will need to get down to under 9 stone to have a healthy BMI. I am wearing size 12 clothes, but I am overweight. No doubt about it.

Plancina · 17/04/2020 09:54

I am usually around 8 stone 7 and a size 8 (5 ft 2) but I moved moved jobs to a much more sedentary one in October and then my partner lost his job and we had to move house, I couldn’t afford the gym and was stress eating and drinking. By Christmas I was 9 st 2 and by yesterday with lockdown 10 st - it is really easily done. Less easy to undo! My clothes are so tight and I need to do something, so have booked a weekly PT session on zoom and am making sure to get 10-15,000 steps per day, doing whatever workout the PT shows me twice more in the week. In addition I’ve cut out the snacks and booze which tbf no one needs, but will allow myself these on weekends in moderation. I think it’s partly age (35 in June) which makes it harder to lose weight than when I was younger.

proudownerofplants · 17/04/2020 10:34

I understand it isn't nice to read someone who is a size 12 describe herself as fat when you are really struggling with substantial weight gain.

However, I also agree with PPs saying that 'fat' is a very personal measure, rather than clinical boundaries for obese/ overweight etc. I know from experience that it is better to address a smaller weight gain rather than explain it away as a bit of water weight here, clothes shrinking in wash there. Weight creeps up so easily if you do that.

I mainly originally came on to say that i quickly had put on 4.5 stone with illness and medication which took me up to almost a size 20 at just over 5'6" with quite a large, sturdy build.

I have got down to a 14 again after 4 months' dieting with non stretchy 12s starting to fit and fasten (tightly!) and am aiming at being a 10-12, which is right for me. I still feel far larger than I would like to be, and look quite flabby.

I think language is important though in striking the balance between not making people feel ashamed of their size, which is never a good motivator to look after yourself, and not just dismissing a slide into an unhealthy weight. Especially when PPs, including the OP, have had issues surrounding food. Therefore no need to say she has a chubby face when we can't even really see it.
