Can get all those items in Aldi for under £20!

TheLightGetsIn · 12/04/2020 19:36

Actually, joking apart, it's probably good that someone still wants this stuff. I read an article yesterday about the Scottish fishing communities being in dire straits and food bank use in those areas hugely increased, partly because the fish and in particular the luxury seafood market has collapsed.

UpAndGoing · 12/04/2020 19:40

I think you should ask your mother to pick more "essential" things.

She'll surely survive without crab Hmm

Sorry. I'm not helpful.

WeAllHaveWings · 12/04/2020 19:40

Do some Tesco substitutions and tell them the shops shelf were empty.

Crab - Felix cat food
Prawns - Skips prawn cocktail crisps
Sea bass - Sea Salt
Salmon - Jar of salmon paste

Seriously though, is the problem you don't think they will pay?

My mum owes me about £100 for hers so far. Don't want to bother her with cash right now. She is too old to transfer electronically and I cant get close!

VegetableMunge · 12/04/2020 19:40

At least lentils are cheap!

VettiyaIruken · 12/04/2020 19:41

Why are you paying? Get the money first or say no.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/04/2020 19:42

Maybe OP is buying an actual Fridge/Freezer too , to put it in......

00100001 · 12/04/2020 19:42

Five HUNDRED BRITISH POUNDS???

are you shopping at F&M or something??

DeathByBoredom · 12/04/2020 19:43

Sounds a pretty normal shopping list, perhaps for a non-meat eater. Where's the £480 going?

louise5754 · 12/04/2020 19:46

Take a zero off and that's our weekly food allowance

Pipandmum · 12/04/2020 19:47

Waitrose fish and meat counters are still open.

Anoisagusaris · 12/04/2020 19:50

Have to laugh at ‘all sorts of vegetables’. Do you not buy vegetables yourself?

Lentils are super cheap.

Bowerbird5 · 12/04/2020 19:51

I bought a bag of large prawns this week for £7:95 and sea bass from M&S is no more than £6 and sometimes less. Salmon is £4 -5.

It must have been a long list!

MamaBearLockdown · 12/04/2020 19:51

how many kilos are you buying? Confused

That's part of a normal shopping list, which for an average size family like mine nowhere near reaches £500!

biscuitsanddiddums · 12/04/2020 19:53

I don’t understand. If no one buys anything except beans and pasta then the entire food system is fucked and we won’t be able to buy anything except beans and pasta. It’s your mam’s civic duty to buy and eat whatever food she wants, can pay for, and is freely available in the shops.
Why on earth would we want to force food shortages and make people fight to the death for the last bag of noname pasta just in some sort of weird virtue signalling performance?
I bloody hope that anyone who can happily afford $500 a week on groceries continues to put out to keep as many businesses afloat as they can. Otherwise even more people are economically fucked.
Mean spirited and counter-productive.

CherryPavlova · 12/04/2020 19:54

You can buy it all online from Fish for thought or the Fish Society. They’ll deliver.

perniciousdot · 12/04/2020 19:56

*Crab
**Prawns
Sea bass
Salmon
All sorts of vegetables, herbs
*Soya beans lentils

I don't get it. Which one is costing hundreds of pounds?

Crunchymum · 12/04/2020 19:59

How are you getting to £500 @tulipsrus ?

OVienna · 12/04/2020 20:01

biscuits I am with you 100%.

MajesticWhine · 12/04/2020 20:02

I'm not surprised. We managed to hit £350 last week, including a few bits for neighbours. Managed to get some seabass too. Everything is full price, most of the usual offers are not there.

goldenorbspider · 12/04/2020 20:04

I'm curious how you've spent 500quid

krankykittykat · 12/04/2020 20:05

I always manage to get prawns, salmon and sea bass reduced in Morrisons. Makes a lovely fish pie for the toddler

alphajuliet123 · 12/04/2020 20:09

Receipt or it didn't happen Smile

Glowcat · 12/04/2020 20:12

I find it’s the ‘all sorts of vegetables’ that does it Hmm

diddl · 12/04/2020 20:16

Prawns, salmon & all sorts of vegetables aren't that expensive are they?

Maybe not standard weekly fare for everyone, but surely not needing to be in the top income bracket either?
