It’s always more expensive buying for other people because if you’re doing it yourself then you can meal plan on the fly and buy stuff that’s slightly different to what you planned but significantly cheaper. If you’re stuck with a list that’s set in stone then it’s probably going to cost you. And the big ticket items like laundry powder or dishwasher tablets are on special offer at least one week in four. If you’re buying for yourself then you’ll wait until a deal week coincides with you having less than three weeks left and then pounce. If you’re buying to someone else’s timetable then you’ll probably pay double the price. I’ve just spent over a hundred quid on a supermarket delivery for an elderly relative living alone, and I haven’t a clue how that happened - I don’t normally pay that to feed two adults two teens and a cat.

Gingerkittykat · 12/04/2020 22:07

I know my local fishmonger has had a hard time getting hold of a lot of fish right now so I've got no idea if you will be able to get all of those items.

I'm assuming Ocado don't have a limit on number of items purchased? Tesco has a limit of 80 and Asda allows you no more than 3 of any item.

tulipsrus · 12/04/2020 22:13

Freakstar- I agree, If belt tightening isn’t required.
It’s basically 3 households food, from Ocado. I usually spend about £100 a week, but there is about £40 dog food extra

Says it’s in stock, so we’ll see on delivery Wed. They don’t seem to have many limits.they did the first week. On one email they were encouraging me to buy more for others.

Wild rocket and sea bass are hardly that exotic. If they can afford it what’s the problem.

I think you should ask your mother to pick more "essential" things. She'll surely survive without crab hmm

As for this - it’s just miserable.

FreakStar · 12/04/2020 22:20

My Ocado shop had a few more missing items than usual and more subs- all reasonable. The pork joint I ordered was missing, hence an extra trip to the butcher! I think they are doing really well on stock levels, and because the roads are quiet my order has been early every time in last few weeks!

Beachcomber1 · 12/04/2020 22:21

I’ve been doing my FIL’s grocery shopping for the past few weeks and I’m shocked at the amount he buys. To be fair, he transfers more than enough to me a few days beforehand and I transfer back his change so I’m not a penny out of pocket but it’s just the sheer volume of food.

Our household grocery bill is currently about £90-100/week- that’s for me and my husband, both WFH now so eating all meals at home. We’re both good cooks and like high-welfare meat, organic veg etc. Normally, we’d spend maybe £60/week in the supermarket but would have breakfast and lunch in work and more meals out.

FIL’s weekly bill is coming to about £130 and that’s just for him. He seems to get through a way more than the two of us.

Marmite17 · 12/04/2020 22:22

Total for list would be ? less than £50 I've recently started buying bits and bobs for neighbour, she pays. So £2.10 for 6 eggs and filtered milk, show her the receipts.
Getting a few multibuys, and bulk buys to send her way as extras, without charge, But she has shown that she isn't a money grabber.

peskipiksi · 12/04/2020 22:23

Actually, it's the luxuries that all still seem to be available. Great selection on the meat counter this weekend. It's flour and eggs and pasta I can't get.

Willybumbum · 12/04/2020 22:24

But lentils are pennies, aren't they...? So it all balances out, sort of.

JustStayHome · 12/04/2020 22:26

"""It’s basically 3 households food, from Ocado""""

So £500 isn't really that high is it??

You say that she will pay, so what is the problem.

Let her eat what she wants, would you prefer she eat soup and a bread roll. .
Get her what she wants and get over it

tulipsrus · 12/04/2020 22:28

It’s not a problem
I just thought it was mildly amusing/interesting
If you don’t... move along

Good on her!
There are worse things that she could be spending money on than decent food.
I would love to live off smoked salmon and single malt whisky when I'm old.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/04/2020 04:31

It's the wild rocket that's bumping the bill up so high, what with it being about 60 p a bag.

It's hardly surprising that, shopping for three families, one of which asks for a few more expensive items like £25 of fish and seafood comes to nearly £500.

Every time there's a 'how much is your weekly shop' thread, there's a good few people spending £200-250 pw and that's in normal times when they have access to the full range of food and special offers and probably spend money on eating out or bought lunches on top. Now that we're buying just about everything we eat from the supermarket, of course it adds up to a lot.

JustStayHome · 13/04/2020 04:34

But OP you didn't seem to find it amusing / interesting in the beginning...

No need to be rude !!!

Reginabambina · 13/04/2020 04:40

Is she pescatarian or something. I couldn’t imagine eating that much seafood in one week. Or maybe see planing on a paella or something that will use up several seafood ingredients in one go?

spagbog5 · 13/04/2020 09:09

I’ve been buying for three households and including crab, salmon, etc every week since lockdown started including Charlie Bingham ready meals for parents and it’s nowhere near £500 .we have not changed our rather costly baskets and the most was £389 - including wine.
Also if she’s paying for her shopping as all my lot are,why would it bother you ?
Seems rather an unkind/deliberately goady thread to be honest!

tulipsrus · 13/04/2020 09:09

You told me to get over it- I thought that was rude

Pescatarian, yes

OP posts:
Booksandwine80 · 13/04/2020 11:14

I don’t see the issue, you’ve done their shopping-tell them how much it is and ask them how they would like to pay you? Or am I missing something Confused

diddl · 13/04/2020 11:28

"I just thought it was mildly amusing/interesting"

That someone wants crab, prawns, sea bass, salmon, all sorts of vegetables, herbs, soya beans, lentils?

Oh.

okiedokieme · 13/04/2020 11:29

I bought everything but the crab, came to £60 (and I bought samphire, fresh herbs etc too) fed 2 for a week

tulipsrus · 13/04/2020 11:29

Ok then
Not interesting obviously
No worries
Just go on about your day

Shopaholic100 · 13/04/2020 12:12

I agree cost of shopping has really increased op. I’ve spent nearly double my usual amount this month. Personally I think it’s unfair that the supermarkets have removed the offers when people need them the most, it feels greedy.

TheSheepofWallSt · 13/04/2020 12:20

Yeah it is expensive atm OP. Youve really shopped for 3 households too....

I love naice food- but I’ve actually downgraded what I buy a bit.
DS is 3 and won’t eat meat really - he’s like a natural vegetarian (except ham Hmm) so I make sure he has a big range of fruit and veg- it costs me SIXTY POUNDS a week to buy enough fruit and veg for him at the minute. Some of it is avos etc but most is basic. And it’s not me eating v much at all- have totally lost my appetite the past month. Confused

Katinski · 13/04/2020 12:33

SNAP TheSheepofWallSt re:loss of appetite.I don't have scales (spawn of the Devil I guess) but I'm sitting on the bones of my arse now.
