If they can afford it, there’s nothing wrong with it. Not everyone wants to eat Aldi basics.

TSSDNCOP · 13/04/2020 12:50

I always wonder who buys the fancy crab in Waitrose. I but naive stuff but never think to buy that. Turns out, like you, it is DM OP! She has it on a rocket and avocado salad with brown bread and butter. Yummy!

She has been on self imposed lock down for much longer than we were ordered to. If she asked, I'd get edible gold leaf to put on her Weatabix.

TSSDNCOP · 13/04/2020 12:51

Buy naice Wink

AdoraBell · 13/04/2020 12:58

That’s what I spend on groceries for a month. I hope your DM will pay for her groceries on the order OP

PriscillaPresley · 13/04/2020 15:45

My Ocado order for this week is £280 and that's for 3 of us plus pets. My parents haven't given me their list yet.

00100001 · 13/04/2020 17:41

@Seriouslyastounded
There's nothing wring with it.

It's just HOW do you spend £500 on food?? How? Confused

Kayagh · 13/04/2020 17:41

I’ve ordered lush meat from a butcher including filet steaks and I got and ordered of swordfish prawns snapper from a fishmonger why should we all live on freakin beans on toast sorry but my husband isn’t out there stuck at sea for us to not have nice grub and it’s costing us more so I’m putting back into the economy and I’m not claiming shit from the gov or bank but I want my luxuries in fact ordered a lobster takeaway from our local restaurant on Saturday don’t do crap food not worth the calories I’m stuck at home that’s enough right now

keeptheaspidistra · 13/04/2020 17:53

Mine was not far off. I blame the one way system, my other half seemed to have felt obliged pick things from EVERY isle 🙈

ambereeree · 13/04/2020 18:43

Considering we're all stuck indoors worrying about coronavirus... Why not eat nice food if you can afford it. No point being miserable

Sheslikethewind007 · 13/04/2020 18:43

I dont spend that a month. Blimey

parentsnet123 · 13/04/2020 18:59

Have to laugh at mumsnet! OP was simply making an observation that her shopping was £500, obviously a lot for a food shop, but clearly goes onto explain the reason why... were being rude and there was no need! Grin it’s time to have a laugh and be kind surely..?
I completely agree OP, our shop last week was £165 and was a bit Shock but then reasoned I have 2 kids at home who usually eat at school plus three adults, we aren’t popping to shops for bread milk lunches out etc, also got all Easter eggs, toiletries booze within that, so felt less extortionate!
Friends have commented the same that they are spending way more.
Love that your mum is still taking her cooking seriously, good for her, why do we love suddenly need to eat pasta and beans!

Crunchymum · 13/04/2020 19:28

My weekly shop (for 5 of us - all meals and also includes nappies and wipes) is an eye watering £210 this week.

We probably spend on average between £120-£150 a week as we're not at all frugal, buy lots fresh throughout the week and use several different supermarkets, but the difference in cost is staggering.

Not many special offers at the moment?

OJZJ · 13/04/2020 19:32

Sorry, do you live inland? Our fish stalls are still open when I walked the dog,
Frozen would probably be fresher than "fresh" fish if you live inland anyway plus I am pretty sure you can get frozen crab, lobster etc not sure if shell fish textures are different when frozen as massive shell fish allergy.

OJZJ · 13/04/2020 19:38

We spent 170 on a food shop delivery this week and other than sausages no meat, no alcohol, very little veg, (BN squash, cabbage, carrots and tomatoes) only fruit was 4 apples and a punnet of grapes every thing else out of stock no bread for my son no GF pasta or flour , no cleaning stuff only thing in abundance that wasn't out of stock was the copious amounts of chocolate that crept into the order bit by bit and 3 Easter eggs so god knows how it was 170.... I find that food is more expensive atm to stop people stock piling and this will last us a few weeks although we need peppers, bread and fruit, veg quite quickly so will have to put ourselves at risk sadly (at risk group)

Comefromaway · 13/04/2020 19:47

And I thought my shopping bill was expensive! Our Asda click n collect came to approx £90 (already had a fruit and veg delivery. A few bits for the in laws brought it to £110. Phoned my parents to ask did they need anything. 3 bottles of vodka, 3 bottles of wine a huge multi pack of Stella later (the fresh mackerel was out of stock) and it ended up coming to £220.

threatmatrix · 13/04/2020 19:57

Soubriquet
‘More fool you’ I’d give my parents anything. They have me every penny they had when I was you.

@Den1se, quite an exaggeration there.

tulipsrus · 13/04/2020 22:10

No, they just eat well

I have never cooked so many meals from scratch since lock down. It's something I have more time for and enjoy trying to make lovely and healthy meals. ,Normally I' m too tired to bother, and will make do with the usual quick fail Safe's , pasta and baked potatoes etc. Also think it's more important than ever to eat well for our immune systems, and give us joy if we are getting down hearted. This is why, at the end of a long and anxious shift, those restaurants that are donating beautifully cooked meals for our NHS staff are so much appreciated and enjoyed.
The food is still there, as someone has already said, we should limit the times we go shopping, but not necessarily limit the items we buy, and if you can buy avocados and dressed crab, if your budget allows, why the hell not.

JCSAR · 14/04/2020 08:17

@TheChosenTwo I completely agree. I don’t know why people are moaning about anything other than beans or pasta not being essentials. I’ve been buying what I would usually buy when I can get it. We can’t leave the house, go on holiday, children can’t go to school surely one thing we can do is eat as we like. I’m sick of the constant judging of every movement and decision at the moment.

tulipsrus · 14/04/2020 10:27

den1se- that’s very mean
They are very unselfish and eat quite sparingly, especially my Dad

This weeks list is even more specific, she’s been online and found some tasty looking stuff and it includes 6 bottles of wine!and bird food!

Zisforstripyoss · 17/04/2020 18:06

If they can afford it & they're paying you back, I can't see the issue. Live and let live is what I say. I can imagine the shock at the online checkout though!

CherryPavlova · 17/04/2020 20:05

Lockdown is hard for people. If you can pass time planning and cooking enjoyable meals, then it’s surely a good thing?
Fish for Thought are better quality and cheaper than Waitrose. Get them to order online; there’s lots of interesting fish and their dressed crab is exceptional.
