The shop I went to yesterday didn't have charcoal.
But never mind I'm sure when lockdown is over there will be endless weekends where its lashing down and we can barbecue in our jumpers and with brollies :o

How are you doing on bonfires?

drunkyhumptydumpty · 09/04/2020 22:14

@dementedma my trick is to be really really busy with the baby.....

DH bosses the BBQ.

TryingToBeBold · 09/04/2020 22:14

@PepePig

Dont forget the smell of manure they will complain about Grin

Pipandmum · 09/04/2020 22:14

You can get bbq charcoal from Amazon to be delivered Saturday.

IvinghoeBeacon · 09/04/2020 22:16

To be fair to the OP, it was a jokey thread about how when the weather is lovely she can’t get hold of charcoal, but once lockdown is lifted it will likely piss it down. She wasn’t encouraging everyone to have BBQs or advocating not giving a shit about those whose health is poor.

Pipandmum · 09/04/2020 22:16

Oops not until NEXT Saturday!

PepePig · 09/04/2020 22:19

@TryingToBeBold

This was a personal fav of mine (farming family). God forbid there was sheep poo on the lane after moving them (probably should have put nappies on them but then the eco friendly police would be after me Wink).

Seriously, though. People need to stop imposing themselves on others. We are all trying to stop the spread of CV. Having a BBQ isn't going to infect people. If you're struggling, close your windows for the 20 minutes a bbq lasts for.

I'm adhering to the government set guidelines with how to deal with this virus. Not Barbara's self righteous rules from 3 doors down. If BBQs are so bad, write to Boris and get him to ban them. Until Chris Witty et al say no, we'll crack on.

Destroyer · 09/04/2020 22:29

Okay, how seriously could it affect your health? As opposed to last year? Someone having a bloody barbeque over the fence, downwind?

Really? Hmm you can’t think of anything this year that is different to last year that might cause people to be concerned about respiratory health?

SquitMcJit · 09/04/2020 22:33

@maxicheddar - really sensible post, thank you.

People asking others to not have barbecues and bonfires now are not killjoys, they are explaining that it is affecting their breathing. Barbecues can be great and we do have them in summer. I wouldn’t have them right now.

SquitMcJit · 09/04/2020 22:36

@ Tfoot75 - our council has just asked people not to have fires - on the advice of the local fire service. Too many people have been burning their rubbish etc.

SquitMcJit · 09/04/2020 22:37

Sorry that should have been @Tfoot75

MrFaceyRomford · 10/04/2020 01:40

Do people seriously not have barbecues because they worry what the neighbours will think?

Sadly, no. But I wish they did.

Amortentia · 10/04/2020 02:23

What is this obsession with burning stuff in urban areas? If you’re burning stuff it’s not just your immediate neighbours that it bothers. I can’t abide the smell of bbqs or any kind of smoke, i know that according to most of you I’m just a miserable killjoy but it makes me feel like I’m choking.

I like to go about my life without infringing upon others and avoid doing stuff in my own home and garden that I can’t contain like noise and smoke. But I’ve have some shocking neighbours who don’t give a feck about anyone else. They’ve excelled themselves during this lockdown by entertaining all sorts in their garden and having bbq’ s and getting pissed everyday. I’m sure they’d be the first to defend their right to enjoy their garden even if it means it bothers everyone else.

TSSDNCOP · 10/04/2020 03:31

@hippee you cracked me up. Did you get to the front of the queue yet?

1300cakes · 10/04/2020 04:43

Pretty sure it's travel that is restricted at the moment, not cooking methods.

For maximum misery we should only boil or poach our food. Steaming allowed 1x per week. But any type of frying - pan, stir or deep - is right out!

IvinghoeBeacon · 10/04/2020 05:20

This sounds awful to live with but not everyone has neighbours like this nor behaves/is behaving like this. My neighbours don’t and we don’t. I barely notice the occasional BBQ other than “mmm someone’s food smells nice!” I don’t like bonfires but I can’t remember the last time someone had one here. But the OP wasn’t talking about having a bonfire or having lots of people over for a BBQ and a piss-up. So I don’t think you’re a “miserable killjoy” for objecting to your neighbours’ behaviour at all, it sounds horrible, but it also doesn’t apply to the OP’s (joke) situation

Hippee · 10/04/2020 07:11

TSSDNCOP - yes I did. Huge disappointment. Could only find tiny camping gas bottles, which would cook about half a sausage. Spent most of my allotted 10 minutes trying to find BBQ ones and didn't even make it to the hot tub aisle.

mooboy · 10/04/2020 08:46

Do people seriously not have barbecues because they worry what the neighbours will think All our neighbours have BBQs so it's not something I think about.

Ferfooksek · 10/04/2020 08:53

I’ve been at work all week doing the job of 4 people. I’ll have a bloody BBQ if I want

JeSuisPoulet · 10/04/2020 08:56

Maybe people just really want to use up all of that bog roll and are so bored they are willing to chance a few sausages cooked in smoke? BBQ's on charcoal always stink. Burnt food stinks, and yes creates smoke.

TSSDNCOP · 10/04/2020 11:32

@Hippee I actually laughed out loud at silly o'clock this morning.

I've sent DH to the patrol station to get a bottle.

CovidCanFKcuOFF · 10/04/2020 11:42

Bbq are usually far shorter than people burning and usually you know it will last a short time. Our neighbours have been lighting bbq and taking it as far a away from houses as possible. It is a bit smokey but doesn't last longer than an hour max.

Bonfires however...

mbosnz · 10/04/2020 11:56

Barbying hamburgers tonight. Yay! Hmmm. Could do sausage inna bun with tomato sauce and onions for lunch. . . No washing will be harmed in the makings of these bbqs. It vill be situated downwind of the house most likely to be affected. . .

I am almost certain my barbecue won't help nor hinder the pandemic. Should a hyacinth-turned-police-informant sit somewhere near I gave them something to hoik about so they will hopefully leave the neighbours who buy an Easter egg alone.

Drag the stove into the garden and pretend, @StealthPolarBear, you know it makes sense. Or use an upturned iron for the authentic burnt-to-death sausage experience.
