I spent £8,000 on windows for an extension and threw away nearly all of the keys with the packaging the day they arrived.

Can anyone beat my stupidity?

Praised DD2 so much for her beautiful mark making of the first letter of her name that she proudly scored it into both sides of my car with a stone.

@FlaskMaster I think you win! @KenDodd ouch!

So we made the weekly round up. My first ever. The most exciting thing to happen to me for ages.

From this thread, things MNers should not be allowed to be in charge of:

New cars
Expensive phones
Nice carpets, tiled or wooden floors
Expensive furniture
Designer clothes
Any electronics like TVs or laptops
Granite kitchen surfaces
Expensive perfume or toiletries
Nice jewellery and watches
Posh glasses and sunglasses
Champagne

Alternatively we all need to max out our accidental damage insurance cover!

I was given the softest, most beautiful silk velvet scarf years ago by a friend. It turned out to have cost them a fortune and, to this day, was the most expensive item of clothing I’d ever owned. It was ruined after we’d had a ‘bit’ to drink and used it as a rope to make a swing in a tree.

V expensive leather handbag which I wouldn't normally get (or take to work). Walking into work the day after buying it and moved sideways to avoid a car coming the other way (one way road in a hospital site) and promptly scraped it down a wall. Massive white scrape marks down the black leather. Well pissed off!

Shewithmagicears2018 · 11/04/2020 22:28

I bought an audi tt..beautiful car. Went to the hairdressers the same afternoon and scraped the very expensive wheels when parking it in a really tight spot. I swore all the way home, then cried...snd now laugh because it's only a car! I wasnt laughing at the £300 bill to get the wheels sorted though! I'm sad that I had decided to change my car before the coronavirus situation and it's just on the drive waiting to be collected now and my new one is delayed. I hope I look after this one better...Grin

Brand new louis vuittons id bought as a gift to myself after a difficult time. Left them on the windowsill in their box in the hallway for a maximum of five minutes while I grabbed a drink. Came back to find my beagle puppy had destroyed the box, bags and chewed the heels of the shoes. I was beyond gutted. I still haven't thrown them away or done anything with them...waiting for a small miracle one day where I look at them and they've somehow repaired themselves. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Purplealienpuke · 11/04/2020 22:52

An ounce of dope destroyed in the microwave.....
Wasn't mine. Boyfriend seriously unimpressed.
Very young and dumb....

Panticus · 12/04/2020 00:38

@Tonyaster - yours is very sad, but it really epitomises horses doesn't it. They break your heart (and your wallet) Sad

I put a pair of AirPods through the wash the same day that I got them as a present from my husband. Embarrassingly, he bought them to replace another set which I had done the exact same thing to.

I've also thrown out a card with about US$500 in it. Again, a present from my husband Confused

Tillygetsit · 12/04/2020 03:04

Brand new all whistles and bells coffee machine. First time of using I put coffee in the wrong place and broke it Blush

LorenzoStDubois · 12/04/2020 05:23

Mother of god - there are some corkers on here.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 12/04/2020 07:34

Just remembered another one. We had a brand new flat screen tv and ds2 was watching a baby dance programme and grabbed some maracas to dance along. The maracca hit the screen and that was the end of that! Luckily we still had our old-style tv in the cellar which was far more robust!

Roselilly36 · 12/04/2020 07:35

We have had some dramas too

Toddler pulling tv over, happened so quick neither of us could get there in time to save it.

I reversed my convertible into a pillar in supermarket car park many years ago.

Ruined DS1 new white RL t-shirt, so I threw it away, thinking he’s got loads of others. He asked me again where it was yesterday!

Washed & tumble-dried my new pair of prescription reading glasses.

But one of the worst things was dropping a whole tray of uncooked chocolate brownies when taking them out of the oven. DH was cooking dinner and asked me to check on them, the look he & DS’ gave me I will never forget, imagine somewhere between total disgust & horror.

Cassandrainthenight · 13/04/2020 00:51

Teenage DD decided to have a party while we went away for two days, came back to a massive fag burn in the middle of the new oak worktop.

DH was given a new work car (available for me to use too), first time I drove it, put a massive dent in its side - someone left their car illegally nearly in front of a ramp going down at a multi storey car park, I didn't have enough room to swing...that was terrifying, hearing the metal scratch and crush. His work actually refused to cover it on the insurance, then DH had to negotiate buying the car from them, and repairing the bodywork cost us nearly a grand 🙁

Shehesheesh · 13/04/2020 01:00

£1200 Mac Book for Christmas. By New Years i had completely fucked it by falling asleep with it on my lap whilst holding a glass of red wine. Woke up and didn’t notice, thought my glass was just empty because I’d drank it, put Mac Book down on floor went to bed. Next day picked it up noticed keys were sticking and that it was wet underneath. I must have spilt a whole glass of wine over it, which seeped into all the gubbins and wrecked it. Took to Apple shop who took it apart but nothing could be rescued. Not insured.

sofato5miles · 13/04/2020 05:36

A nanny told me a story before on 3 boys she used to look after who were pretty wild. The eldest was mid teens and, while the parents were out, held a bbq. They put the bin next to the bbq that caught fire, fell and then set the car on fire....

LoveIsLovely · 13/04/2020 05:50

so many smashed phones and shrunken jumpers.

flirtybird · 13/04/2020 20:55

Took my husband to Birmingham for chemotherapy and they were running late, we lived a few hours from QE so had to leave home early for his appointment.

We left the hospital at gone 7 and by time we got home it was 10.15pm and I was knackered.
Turning left into our narrow drive I underestimated how much room I had and scraped and warped both passenger side doors.

Ended up with 2 new doors through the insurance.

  1. I worked at an internet service provider after uni. We provided internet to about 1500+ expat business in the late 90s. Went into the server room, tripped on a cable, grabbed the rack in front of me and it fell over. all the routers came smashing down. Plus I didn't notice that i pulled another cable when tripping - not just the big one i fell over- and there was no internet for 3 days to all our customers. And i didn't get fired.
  1. Got a new laptop about 10 yrs ago at a workplace. I always have my coffee mug on the right hand side, above the mouse. It's a ritual thing - always have it there. About 20-25 cm from any laptop. Opened the laptop, fired it up, got distracted by someone, put don my coffee on the left side. Went for luch, going back to desk talking with someone and as I reached to turn on the laptop knocked all the coffee into the keyboard of the 3 hr old laptop.
  1. bought a car 3 yrs ago. Used, but in beautiful condition, new alloy wheels. Went for the first drive. We come from mainland Europe, so here we drive on the "wrong" side. That didn't help with the parking. the alloy wheels still bear the marks to this day.
Buddywoo · 13/04/2020 22:16

My mother bought me a beautiful long cardigan from Yves St Laurent in Paris. I washed it for the first time very carefully, and because it wasn't quite dry and I wanted to wear it I put it in the tumble dryer. Ruined.

beccamums29 · 14/04/2020 16:45

Is that a euphemism? 😆
