What's the most expensive thing you have ruined in the shortest space of time.

I spent £8,000 on windows for an extension and threw away nearly all of the keys with the packaging the day they arrived.

Can anyone beat my stupidity?

I spilt a bottle of red nail polish over our new pale carpet, the day after it had been fitted.

In terms of ruining something in an aaarrrrggghhhh way rather than than an expensive kind of way Blush on our 3rd date, my BF gave me a beautiful handbag (actually quite expensive for him at the time) that I had admired on the previous date and he had gone back and bought for me as a surprise. Lovely. Thoughtful. I got drunk and left it in the taxi on the way back to his Blush Never saw it again of course. BF was very nice about it though, so I married him Grin

Bluebooby · 07/04/2020 14:31

Nothing as expensive as a lot of these but I smashed the screen of the new phone I'd been bought for my birthday, one or two days after I'd received it.

QuentinWinters · 07/04/2020 14:35

Bought an evening dress for £100, heavily reduced in the sales. Got the period from hell unexpectedly at the event I bought it for, had to leave after an hour, dress was ruined Sad I'm still sad about it

minipie · 07/04/2020 14:49

Stepped on the hem of my wedding dress and tore a big strip off it. Luckily after the ceremony...

Noticed a mark on our big American fridge freezer and scrubbed it off. Only the scrubber left massive scratches on the fridge

Just after new kitchen installed, DD age 4 picked up the screwdriver I’d left on the surface and gouged a big scratch on the island drawers

Bananabixfloof · 07/04/2020 14:54

What's with the granite worktops? I had my new kitchen fitted with lovely granite worktops and a week later it was Christmas, I was pouring wine for me and someone else, broke the bottle on the edge which chipped the edge, and at the same time broke both wine glasses and sloshed red wine everywhere. I dont live there any more but that chip irked me all the time I did live there.
Lobbed my dressing gown in the washer without checking pockets and yes my phone was in it.
And bloody yonks ago bought a suede jacket, not terribly expensive. Second day I wore it I leaned on something freshly painted blue. Didnt go too well with nut brown. Had to throw the jacket away.

NerdyBird · 07/04/2020 15:00

This makes me feel hugely better about the chip in our kitchen floor tiles after 3 years. We can't properly fix it without dismantling a huge larder cupboard and moving the fridge, so chipped it will stay for now.

Petiolaris · 07/04/2020 15:02

Spent £500 on designer glasses. Had them for a couple of days - a bee buzzed round me and I freaked out and wafted it away, knocking my glasses off in the process. They fell on the ground and a huge chunk chipped out of the frame.

Dozer · 07/04/2020 15:04

Knitwear.

So many times I now only buy stuff that can be washed at 40.

Boogiewoogietoo · 07/04/2020 15:06

Brand new laptop at university. I had saved up for months and just taken it out of box and opened it to admire its glossy newness. BF came over with a glass of wine for me just as I jumped up to find the cable. Wine poured all over the keyboard.

Although I waited for it to dry, it was completely broken and never switched on.

All my uni essays were hand written.

BentBastard · 07/04/2020 15:14

I've shrunk loads of knitwear, I can't be trusted to own knitwear but did have some well dressed toddlers for a while!

BikeRunSki · 07/04/2020 15:14

A long time ago, an IT guy at work knocked a bottle of Sunny Delight over the server, necessitating 60 people to be sent home for the rest of the week and a new server.

BikeRunSki · 07/04/2020 15:17

Before PCs/laptops were widespread, a friend of mine took her hand typed dissertation-in-progress with her everywhere. Even swimming, where it slid out of her locker and into a puddle on the changing room floor. No £ cost, just blood, sweat and tears.

Cosmos45 · 07/04/2020 15:22

@Noworrieshere - I have done EXACTLY the same as you. My husband bought me a beautiful bright red patent leather handbag about 12 years ago from LK Bennett, it was the most expensive bag I had ever owned and I did the same with a permanent marker. I still have the bag but there is a big black stain that has leaked through from the inside to the outside of the bag at the front..

hairycabbage · 07/04/2020 15:22

This one wasn't really my fault as such but did make me sad! Whilst walking through the city centre a lady tripped behind me and landed on the floor. She had cut her head and was feeling dizzy and faint but the ground was wet and muddy so I took off my new light brown suede coat to put under her head and one of the baby's blankets from the pushchair over her. An ambulance soon arrived but my jacket was ruined with blood and mud etc so I had to put it in the bin nearby- we were on a weekend away so wouldn't even have been able to try to clean it for several days. I still don't regret it but I loved that coat!

sam221 · 07/04/2020 15:26

I accidentally scratched a Chanel bag, given as a present within hours. I fell and it awkwardly fell alongside me, I inadvertently scratched the front. I still have the bag and the story is now part of it's history. I still fall and it really is super embarrassing!

Oldraver · 07/04/2020 15:29

I managed to chip a 6 month old glass hob.

Showing a friend how you 'bend' sunglasses to fit face better, yep, snapped my pricey sunglasses in half on the nose bridge.

Washed countless expensive items of clothing so they become Borrower-sized.

Put a beautiful enamel casserole dish on the electric hob.

Put a plastic kettle on the Aga hot plate.

Racing to get a space in a car park in my newish car and managed to 'mount' a kerbed island, causing huge damage underneath.

Place some lovely new long stemmed wine glasses into top rack of dishwasher, wouldn't shut so decided best course of action to 'gently force'..

DustyMaiden · 07/04/2020 15:41

New bright red XR3i put diesel in it. Cost £200 to drain, was a lot of money then.

BiBiBirdie · 07/04/2020 15:45

My DP had a beautiful Armani jacket when.we met. I had borrowed it to go home one evening and so thought I would show him my potential wife material status, and wash it
Oh my god never ever ever think designer stuff can go in a normal wash.
I washed it then tumble dried it
It melted the inside of the jacket. Literally melted it.

I was in tears when he came over and said did I have his jacket. He was very kind about it and still has the jacket to this day, 20 years later. He cut the melted lining out.

His sister bought her first car way back in the 80s, took it to show their mum, parked it up and it was written off by a Milk Float

His other sister bought a secondhand canal houseboat in 1987. A month before the hurricane. It was totaled but she actually got more in insurance than she paid for it so that worked out well

Elbels · 07/04/2020 16:04

Assume I left my kindle on a plane because I didn't have it when I got home from holiday.

Boyfriend got me a fancy Fitbit for Christmas, a week after getting it I fell over running and smashed the face. I felt so embarrassed telling him.

Whitelisbon · 07/04/2020 16:05

Hired a car for the weekend, got given a brand spanking new one (16 miles on the clock when I collected it!), drove it round the corner and filled up with diesel.
Totally written off, seeing as it was a petrol car. Blush Arnold clark were lovely, replaced it with another hire car (not quite so shiny and new though), and it didn't cost me a penny, apart from the tank of diesel.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 07/04/2020 16:37

I’ve also dropped an expensive bottle of perfume. I rushed into town and luckily managed to replace it. Dh never knew.

itssquidstella · 07/04/2020 17:03

Not the most expensive objectively but at the time it was expensive to me: when I was 23 and working in my first proper graduate job I bought a beautiful wool jumper from Jack Wills. It cost about £70 and fit me beautifully. The first time I washed it, I shrank it 😩

houseofrabbits · 07/04/2020 17:08

We had beautiful engineered wood flooring fitted a few years ago, cost us £3k which is the most we've ever spent on a home improvement. A few days later we were putting the big Lego rocket (if you know Lego you know the one I mean) onto the shelf. It is in 3 parts and my DH was holding 2 of them, the third part fell off and smashed into our floor and scratched/chipped it. We were gutted! Now it has various other scratches/chips from everyday living (and Ikea delivery people!) we aren't quite as bothered.
