Furloughed Workers - is your employer topping up to 100%

Teddypops · 06/04/2020 10:13

I think my employee is a bit grumpy that I haven't topped her up to 100%.

I run a very small business, there are 2 of us. We offer a service, which we had to stop as soon as we were locked down. It wasn't safe for us to continue. So from that date there is no income until it is lifted.

If there wasn't the help from the government and I had to continue to pay her, I would have gone bankrupt (sole trader, not a limited company) .

Are you being topped up and what size company do you work for?

Yes we are. Largish organisation. They have retained some staff to do what they can from home. This is a football club, but lower league. I do not think for a minute they are at danger of folding, but zero income whilst this plays out until matches can start again and a very hefty monthly wage bill.

lastonetime · 06/04/2020 10:17

Nope, only what they can claim,
huge company on every high street

Sereneren · 06/04/2020 10:19

I am getting paid my contact hours which sounds good but when I usually do a lot of overtime it's not so great.

Chasingsquirrels · 06/04/2020 10:26

No, and I think that's perfectly reasonable.

Sereneren it should be based on 80% of the higher of (i) your pay in the same period last year and (ii) the average of your 2019/20 pay. If employed for less than a year then the average of your pay to date.
So if you usually work extra hours this should be taken into account rather than only using your contracted hours.

NekoShiro · 06/04/2020 10:26

Nope, big highstreet name and I'm furloughed at 80% pay

Pineapple75 · 06/04/2020 10:49

Yes, for April at least. May is yet to be decided. Medium sized company who have only furloughed about 25% of staff. The rest are still working from home. Company still making money online, although a lot less than usual at this time of year.

Barton10 · 06/04/2020 10:49

My company is topping up for as long as they can but that might change. You

everybodysang · 06/04/2020 10:53

No. Medium sized publishing business. Just the 80%. Those not furloughed are also taking a pay cut to 80%. This includes me and I think most people feel the same way I do - obviously a pay cut is not great but we love the company we work for and our jobs so we're ok with making the sacrifice because we want so much to keep our jobs.

Teddypops · 06/04/2020 10:55

Personally I think that 80% is a great offer to not do any work, especially as it means you can keep your job.

I could ask her to work full time from home doing boring admin work for 100% of pay, but then she wouldn't be able to do anything else or home school the kids.

anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 06/04/2020 10:56

80% here. My company has approx 250 employees and over 50% are furloughed.

I think your employee is BU. Personally I'm glad to still have a job and be paid something in this current crisis. I'm lucky we're not paying nursery fees either as they have decided to shut.

HeyYah · 06/04/2020 10:56

No. Large private healthcare business.

User18492725204065241 · 06/04/2020 11:00

Nope. Despite them making millions in profits last year and having the money to massively expand. Also didn't back date it to when they cut all our shifts, only for the week before April 1st. They've also decided to pay monthly rather than weekly after this week, so now having another 3 weeks with no pay unexpectedly when we haven't recovered from last month.

NewYearNewTwatName · 06/04/2020 11:01

No and that is totally fine.

It's a family business that still have a lot of running costs going out but with hardly any cash flow coming in now. I'm just relieved their bank balance is healthy enough that they can pay all the staff the 80% before they are reimbursed by the government.

I know loans are available for companies who can't, but from what I've heard that's not running smoothly either.

Throughabushbackwards · 06/04/2020 11:01

I work in an independent school, they are not topping up any furloughs.

nancy75 · 06/04/2020 11:01

being paid 100% although I told my boss not to. Very small business, boss & me, zero money coming in as we can’t offer the service until social distancing is over. It’s not a huge amount of money but he’s going to end up skint - I’ve told him I’m giving it back!

Thighmageddon · 06/04/2020 11:02

No mine aren't, I'm just grateful to be being paid something whilst sat at home watching tv.

thebeatofthedrum · 06/04/2020 11:03

No. Small manufacturing business and 75% of my team has been furloughed. But that's fine because I really want there to be a business to go back to at the end of this.

wibblewobblejiggle · 06/04/2020 11:03

Nope. But we are completely fine with that and just really grateful for what we are getting.

AvoidingRealHumans · 06/04/2020 11:04

Nope. Massive company who could probably afford to, can't complain though, we aren't working so are essentially getting paid for nothing.

BuffaloCauliflower · 06/04/2020 11:05

No, SME sized charity. 90% are being furloughed on 80% of pay, though we are topping up the few for whom 80% takes them over the £2500 cap to 80% of THEIR pay.

MuseumOfYou · 06/04/2020 11:08

Yes, I'm in the minority then! There's about 15 of us.

ilovecakeandwine · 06/04/2020 11:09

No and I wouldn't expect any further . It will be making huge losses so I'd most likely have lost my job by now so I'm grateful. I'm hopeful that when lockdown over I can go back to my job even if it's part time .

DCIRozHuntley · 06/04/2020 11:10

DH won't be. Ftse 1pp company.

NiteFlights · 06/04/2020 11:11

No, and I wouldn’t expect them to in the circs. I do think they have been cavalier in their financial planning in general but there’s nothing I can do about that.

isseywith4vampirecats · 06/04/2020 11:18

one job chain restaurant they are topping up to 100% other job a cat charity they are paying 80% and I have let them know I don't expect any more than that as this situation could be the end of them as a charity they are small and no fundraising events or adoptions going on only what they can raise via online donations
