How long is your daily jaunt outdoors lasting?

I've been taking my 2 kids on a 1 hour bike ride each day - they are 3 and 6 so it's a slow ride but we go round the whole outside of the village once and back in from the back way then straight home. Sometimes we stay in one little area (there's a small green with a circular path in the middle they like to whizz round) - but only for a few minutes and if there's no one else around. My friend thinks this is excessive and it should be 10 minutes max! What is every else doing?

Exactly. I think a lot of people snottily saying “well they never used to exercise before” are forgetting that people probably did, just in different places.

Absolutely. And even relatively lazy people like me can clock up about 7-8000 steps on the school run, walking to work, perhaps popping out at lunchtime, walking around in work during the day etc. I'm not looking to give Mo Farrah a run for his money, I just need to keep my body moving.

Sandsnake · 06/04/2020 09:57

Probably an average of 80 mins or so, with newborn in carrier and four year old on foot whining playing. Lucky enough to have isolated woodland around and so don’t meet many others. We have a garden but it’s small and not amazing for playing in.

Ragwort · 06/04/2020 09:58

About a 90 minute walk, we live rurally so easy to walk on footpaths. Do meet a few people, always stop and chat (at a distance). I exercise separately to my DH, good to spend time apart when we can Grin.

OMG a thread where most people have responded in a polite and factual way!!

I run for about an hour most days or walk for about 2 hours. I am missing my usual weight lifting.

Dowser · 06/04/2020 10:01

About an hour , maybe more , maybe less
Depends on time of day and how chilly it is

Curiousmum69 · 06/04/2020 10:08

Anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

GemmaTellerMorrow · 06/04/2020 10:15

Five miles every morning with the dog. We're very fortunate having a route direct from our house that means we don't pass many other people. We don't have to touch any gates or stiles, and can always observe social distancing guidance.

spiderlight · 06/04/2020 10:16

About an hour, but it tends not to be particularly strenuous because we have our dog with us and he's an older boy and more of a potterer than a zoomer, so we have to stop while he sniffs things.

astridstar · 06/04/2020 10:58

Between 1 - 2 hours. We have a three day rotation, day one joint walk with dogs for an hour, day 2 I go for a bike ride for between 90/120 mins and DH walks dogs for about an hour ( we do this separately and at different times) then we swap for day 3 and repeat. We live in a very quiet rural coastal area and don't see many others on our dog walks and can easily avoid them when we do, we're on the road on our bike rides, one main road out of town and then country lanes, and the roads are really really quiet.

permana · 06/04/2020 22:27

An hour and 15mins mins walking/running the dog.
I'm still working and I always walk through dog this much - I know where to go/ what time to avoid other people.

AlbusSeverusPotter13 · 06/04/2020 22:29

2-3 hours but we choose to walk near fields with fewer people.

lljkk · 06/04/2020 22:31

Tends to be about an hour. I get tired after that. And I'm super busy with work right now. When not working, there's housework...

Ifeel1000yearsold · 06/04/2020 22:57

About 30 mins a day for us

HoldMyLobster · 07/04/2020 00:15

Today I went for two walks - one 45 minutes, one about an hour.

One on a hiking trail near my house, and one just a walk around town. Both with the dog.

Petiolaris · 07/04/2020 00:22

I don’t go out at all. Too many stories of people purposely trying to infect others, coughing at them and thinking it’s funny, etc. Or even just people not having common sense and approaching closer than 2m. I tried to go out but I just felt exposed and threatened.

Wilmalovescake · 07/04/2020 00:24

Usual dog walk around our deserted moor is an hour so I’m still doing that. Don’t see anyone on weekdays; see a couple of people at weekends.

CremeEggThief · 07/04/2020 00:26

Between 30 minutes- an hour on my own most days. There are lots of different routes to choose from near me.

QuestionableMouse · 07/04/2020 00:27

1-2 hours usually. Had to cut it down because I've sprained my bloody ankle and start hobbling if I go too far.

Pipandmum · 07/04/2020 00:33

When out with the dogs about 45 minutes. My son takes them for about an hour and a half or longer - he used to go to the gym twice a day and needs to move.
There will be plenty of rainy days when you won't take the kids out at all so make use of the sunshine.

ChristmasCarcass · 07/04/2020 00:34

1-2 hours. I run then DH runs, and we take it in turns to wear out DS3. Then do a quick bit of yoga/stretching (10-15mins) and walk back home.

DS might ride his bike, hit a tennis ball about, or kick a football. Or just run about playing hide and seek. It’s a big park and we’re up at the “boring” end, so we’re a good 25m from the nearest people even at weekends.

Bouledeneige · 07/04/2020 00:38

60 - 120 minutes.

EugenesAxe · 07/04/2020 00:41

I do a country walk which can be 2-3 hours long. I don't see many people though as I usually go late afternoon.

Petiolaris · 07/04/2020 00:58

All these people taking 1-2 hour long walks every day... how did you manage to fit it in when you worked all day then commuted home? If you didn’t do it when you worked then why do you need to do it now at exactly the time you should be staying at home?

DrivingMsCrazy · 07/04/2020 01:15

@Petiolaris not everybody works full time. Not everybody commutes. I've carved out a life for myself with a specialist skill which means I only need to work a few hours a day and can do it from home. People are retired or wealthy or lots of other reasons for not working all day every day. I know heaps of people who go to the gym for an hour daily, so why wouldn't they still want to do an hours exercise a day? Not everybody is on the hamster wheel.

ChristmasCarcass · 07/04/2020 01:17

Petiolaris I used to cycle to work, so that’s ten miles a day I’m no longer doing. Plus gym classes, swimming etc. The running is my usual 5km 3x week. DS was in nursery, and spending a couple of hours a day in their garden, plus walking half a mile there and back each day. Plus swimming lessons, tumbletots, etc. One hour chasing a tennis ball is really not the same.
