How long is your daily jaunt outdoors lasting?

I've been taking my 2 kids on a 1 hour bike ride each day - they are 3 and 6 so it's a slow ride but we go round the whole outside of the village once and back in from the back way then straight home. Sometimes we stay in one little area (there's a small green with a circular path in the middle they like to whizz round) - but only for a few minutes and if there's no one else around. My friend thinks this is excessive and it should be 10 minutes max! What is every else doing?

1-2 hours. It is quiet round here through the day. We go down a bridleway to a dene or along the Prom or to the lighthouse and back along the beach. Sometimes the children take their bikes, sometimes we all walk.

Stet · 05/04/2020 23:19

We have a big garden so prefer to use that instead. Dog and DD both quite happy chasing each other around. DD has just learned to throw the dog's ball (badly) so that keeps them entertained and racing around Grin

Timeandtune · 05/04/2020 23:22

I try to run each day for 40 mins. Have changed my route and the time I go out to meet as few folk as possible. Everyone is v conscious of social distancing and will cross roads etc to avoid close contact. Lots of smiles, thank yous and thumbs up.

Daffodil101 · 05/04/2020 23:22

I started walking to get fitter in 2013. I do about 40-50km a week, a 10km walk taking 1hr 30 in pretty rural area. The only thing that ever stops me is snow.

So I’ve done 10km a day since Mother’s Day, 140km so far. I’m pleased that people are walking more, but it’s a bit like when you are a long standing member of a gym and it’s packed out in January with people who have got this new idea about exercising.

I’m doing nothing out of the ordinary, I’m going to be pretty pissed off when all these new gym members ruin it for the rest of us 🙄

NemophilistRebel · 05/04/2020 23:28

I do an hourS walk

I don’t get far as I go with a toddler and I’m pregnant but I come back exhausted

MamaJules34 · 05/04/2020 23:38

1-2 hours of walking

Then probs two quick walks round the block with the pram - 20 mins each max

Ohyesiam · 05/04/2020 23:46

We live rurally and go out for a Daily walk that lasts up to 2 hours.
Hours can 10 minutes be exercise, and why does she think it should be so short?

Ohyesiam · 05/04/2020 23:47

How not hours

Temporaryanonymity · 05/04/2020 23:48

Around an hour or so in the park. It’s behind my house so no different to being in our park garden at certain times. We avoid it when there’s lots of people. I do circuits of the park mainly.

We are being very good and not using the tennis court because I read somewhere we couldn’t but my sons and I do use the basketball hoop. It’s right at the other end of the park and hardly anyone knows about it.

Every couple of days I walk through the park down to the beach for a longer walk. The circular route is 5 miles. I also bought a reebok step to use in the house.

AdoptedBumpkin · 06/04/2020 00:43

Tends to be under 30 minutes. Trouble with being in a village is I can cover it in a loop in that time.

Liddell · 06/04/2020 02:45

I go out at 2pm with the dog for an hour, seems to be quieter then.

Inkpaperstars · 06/04/2020 03:35

A GP was asked this on Sky and he said a reasonable interpretation is thirty minutes. I think this is based on guidelines for keeping a basic level of fitness. The exercise is intended to serve as just that, not to be an outing. I think an hour is fine though. Over 90 mins would be pushing it, although if you are lucky to live in a really quiet area where you aren't using up space needed for other people to exercise then I guess it doesn't matter too much. Near me if people were staying out two hours it would be too crowded for most people to find a space at some point in the day.

HarrietThePi · 06/04/2020 03:43

About 20-30mins if I'm on my own. Anywhere between 45 mins and 2 hours if I go with DD. She's a much slower walker than I am. We walk to a nearby field where we run about for a while so she can let off some steam. On my own I just walk around the streets and usually incorporate a trip to the shop into it. (Or at least this is what I did pre finding out I'm supposed to be shielding).

tumpymummy · 06/04/2020 04:03

I'm not going out at all but then I'm lucky I have a large garden. I'm exercising at home by doing workouts online. But hubby has been out for long bike rides this weekend. I asked him not to but he just thinks I am overreacting.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 06/04/2020 06:17

About 45 minutes on weekdays, 90 minutes at weekends. I go out at 6am so that it’s still very quiet.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/04/2020 06:26

2 hours to do 10,000 steps (my dog walks very slowly)

MamaGee09 · 06/04/2020 06:48

Weve not been going out at all. We only go out to the shop for essentials. I live in a small town and the place is so busy with people getting their daily exercise. More busier than usual, it’s too busy for me with this blooming virus going about. i’d Rather stay inside,

devildeepbluesea · 06/04/2020 06:52

1-2 hours depending on my route, through largely deserted woodland. I do this only 3-4 days a week when DD is with her dad. When she's with me we go out for an hour max. Just bought a bike though so the nature, but probably not the length of the exercise will change.

Crystal87 · 06/04/2020 06:54

About an hour to an hour and a half walking with DH and kids on the park. Though we go out around once every 2-3 days.

nononever · 06/04/2020 07:03

30 minutes brisk walk after dinner. All the parks here are closed as are all forest walks etc, the council have erected metal barriers as people were ignoring the temporary woven plastic ones and pulling then down and driving over them. There have been a few fines handed out here, the police have been quite vigilant in checking drivers. If you are in a vehicle with someone you don't live with and don't have a good reason you are fined.

I'm happy to stay home right now but really feel for people with young children who don't have a lot of outdoor space for them to run around in.

HelloJohnGotANewMotor · 06/04/2020 07:27

Why do you call it a jaunt?
You go out for exercise- not for a jolly outing, for a change of scene, to relieve the boredom. Go out for exercise- keep moving, observe social distancing, go straight home, wash your hands. Stay out as long as it takes- most people seem to think an hour is plenty to get heart rate up and use the muscles but there's no fixed rule. It's about you weighing up how much you NEED your EXERCISE and whether it has to be OUTDOORS, against the RISKS of you and your kids contracting the virus whilst out of the safety of your home.
It's not a jaunt.

Deelish75 · 06/04/2020 07:31

40-45 minutes.
5 minutes walk to local park. 30 minutes to do 2 laps. 5 minute walk home.

Xiaoxiong · 06/04/2020 07:33

We've been doing 30-40 mins walk, but has to be saved for the dog and she doesn't go fast enough to make it exercise as she keeps stopping to sniff etc so it's really for fresh air/mental health.

For exercise we've been doing HIIT bodyweight stuff at home, the kids and I have been doing Joe Wicks etc. That's much better exercise than a pootle around the park anyway.

Bluesheep8 · 06/04/2020 07:41

45 minute walk every evening.

HelloDulling · 06/04/2020 07:42

An hour or so walking. For us that’s 8000 steps, give or take.
