How long is your daily jaunt outdoors lasting?

I've been taking my 2 kids on a 1 hour bike ride each day - they are 3 and 6 so it's a slow ride but we go round the whole outside of the village once and back in from the back way then straight home. Sometimes we stay in one little area (there's a small green with a circular path in the middle they like to whizz round) - but only for a few minutes and if there's no one else around. My friend thinks this is excessive and it should be 10 minutes max! What is every else doing?

It’s been varying - some days not been out at all, some days anything between 25 mins and 1 hour. Saturday was 2 hours, but we barely saw anyone the entire time. I try and get out for an hour to feel like it was “worth it”

I’m obese so someone you’d look at and Scoff “like she did any exercise pre-quarantine” but actually I used to walk to and from work each day (30 mins each way), plus a walk at lunchtime if not raining; so I really do miss the fresh air and exercise.

MrsFruitcake · 06/04/2020 07:48

An hour a day. Combination of a walk along the edge of fields and then through a large estate. Usually see very few people and those that we do keep their distance. About 1.75 miles in total.

I go with my DS aged 12 who either walks or goes on his bike. DS and DH sometimes come too when they can be bothered but it's DS who really needs to be out as he is such an active child.

OuterMongolia · 06/04/2020 07:53

Most days I go for a run - sometimes on my own and sometimes the kids come with me. I do a loop which takes around 35-40 minutes.

SimonJT · 06/04/2020 08:01

At least two hours a day, we walk to the park, then kick a football, run etc, or yesterday my son insisted on bunny hopping around the area I was running in then he had to be a dinosaur the entire walk home.

On a normal non-lockdown day we would be out for around an hour and a half on a week day and two to three hours at the weekend.

Grobagsforever · 06/04/2020 08:09

Ideally I would walk 90 mins a day as this is what I do when not on lock down. Harder to find the time though with work and homeschool. Where I live everyone observes social distancing so I'll walk for hours if I choose, don't need to come within 10m of another person so I'm uninterested in what the self appointed lock down stasi have to say.

Sarcelle · 06/04/2020 08:09

45 mins on a work day. At the weekend 2 hours - maintained social distancing all the way. Went through a park at one point. No sunbathers, no picnickers, nobody sitting, just people taking a walk avoiding everybody. Exercise helps your immune system. If you are observing the social distance guidelines you are doing ok.

I go to the shops once a week. Only seen my DH for three weeks, been wfh since second week in a March.

Scruffyoak · 06/04/2020 08:10

About 30mins then we play in garden.

okiedokieme · 06/04/2020 08:10

An hour or so, depending on where I go, sometimes longer as I combine a shopping trip on the way back

MrsJBaptiste · 06/04/2020 08:16

The kids are going out on a bike ride most days (around an hour) and will then be in and out of the garden all day.

I can't go out (12 week rule) so am exercising at home and sitting in the garden to get some fresh air. Even if it's been cold, I've got my coat and blanket on and sat out there just to get some fresh air!

Inkpaperstars · 06/04/2020 08:16

@SimonJT I am not sure if kicking a football around in the park is a good idea. I'm not sure but I don't think it is an approved way of taking the daily exercise and it's the kind of thing that is making them talk about banning outdoor exercise. I know it's just your household, I am not saying it is risky I am just very nervous about how the govt are going to react to things.

SimonJT · 06/04/2020 08:21

You do realise there isn’t an approved list of exercise? Just odd people making weird things up. A bit like yesterdays fake video’s of London Fields.

MrsWombat · 06/04/2020 08:53

Someone on one of the press conferences said a very vague "well 150 minutes a week is the recommended amount of exercise a week and that would be in addition to exercising your muscles indoors." (paraphrasing)

Your hour bike ride sounds fine. I've been taking the kids for a 40 minute walk around our local woods.

AnonymityIsGreat · 06/04/2020 09:10

Half an hour twice walking to/from work when I'm working. Half an hour run when I'm not.

Dyrne · 06/04/2020 09:15

@Inkpaperstars football has literally been mentioned by the government as an example of exercise, as long as it remained within family/household groupings.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 06/04/2020 09:18

@Dyrne I'm the same, missing my 20 min each way walk to work. I never used to walk in the park before but I didn't need to.

Dyrne · 06/04/2020 09:34

Exactly. I think a lot of people snottily saying “well they never used to exercise before” are forgetting that people probably did, just in different places. At weekends we’d often drive around to park up and do a nice long scenic walk. Obviously we can’t do that any more so we’re sticking more locally. Similarly, people would go to gyms or athletics/leisure centres to exercise and are now forced to go for a run in their local area.

Inkpaperstars · 06/04/2020 09:36

@Inkpaperstars football has literally been mentioned by the government as an example of exercise, as long as it remained within family/household groupings.

I stand corrected! As I said I wasn't sure. Apologies @SimonJT

sweetkitty · 06/04/2020 09:43

An hour with the dog sometimes not everyday DH and I tend to alternate.

CormoranStrike · 06/04/2020 09:48

I’m doing an hour at a time

sHREDDIES19 · 06/04/2020 09:50

The kids go for a 20 minute spin on their scooters, and for me it’s around a 45 minute fast walk.

MorrisZapp · 06/04/2020 09:51

About an hour and a half, but three hours at the weekend as I take shopping to my mum.

WaterIsWide · 06/04/2020 09:52

It varies. When my husband and I go out for a short walk or a long run.

You do realise there isn’t an approved list of exercise?

That's right. Just like there isn't an approved list of grocery essentials. Doesn't stop the self appointed food/supermarket, 'Police' and the self appointed exercise, 'Police' on this thread, though.

At least two hours a day, we walk to the park, then kick a football, run etc, or yesterday my son insisted on bunny hopping around the area I was running in then he had to be a dinosaur the entire walk home.

Well done SimonJT. I purchased a football for my husband and I to play with to vary our outdoor exercise. It will get dull if all we do is walk or run the same route to the same place.

So when we walk or run to the park we throw the ball to each other. Or we dribble the ball to each other.

We do a You Tube back yard bootcamp online exercise video. Then jog to the park. Do more exercise in the park. Then jog or walk home. We do a short stretch off YouTube video at home to end the exercise session.

waterlego · 06/04/2020 09:53

About an hour and a half because that’s what the mutt needs. I wait for low tide and walk the 400m to the beach to walk him right out by the water’s edge. I see other people at a distance of about 100 metres, even yesterday when there were more people there than normal.

WaterIsWide · 06/04/2020 09:54

So when we walk or run to the park we throw the ball to each other. Or we dribble the ball to each other.

We carry the ball to the park. We don't start playing with it until we get to the park then we carry it home with us.

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/04/2020 09:54

I think that's fine. I don't like to go over an hour, that maybe why I'm overweight.
