Anyone else been spending A lot of money online, since lockdown

I’ve ordered things online for the kids and a few treat etc and seem to have spent fair bit more than usual, guess it’s some sort of attempt to feel better

OP posts:
FenellaVelour · 30/03/2020 10:02

I’ve bought some ebooks for my Kindle and some digital movies to watch. Other than that, my online purchases have been mostly food and drink. I admit I ordered a case of wine from Majestic.

myfav · 30/03/2020 11:02

Yes I have. Mainly things for the DC, educational and entertainment. Also spending more money on weekly shop as there are no longer any offers.

JustW1lliam · 30/03/2020 11:07

Puzzles😩

Baaaahhhhh · 30/03/2020 11:09

I have bought quite a lot - but mostly useful....
A load of jigsaws
Two large troughs for vegetables, and plants to go in them.
Compost and grow bags (click and collect)
Various sprays and feeds for plants

A desk and some extra office supplies for the three extra workers we now have in the house.

Non delivery stuff:
Netflix
Increased broad band to 200 whatevers.

DH wants to buy new garden furniture, which we need, and will obviously use a lot in the next few months.

Am I a terrible person?

morriseysquif · 30/03/2020 11:13

I did buy some crafting stuff which I would have bought anyway.

I have an EBay addiction which is vastly reduced which is probably a good thing.

Shopgirl1 · 30/03/2020 11:45

I’ve ordered a few bits for the kids, not much, some tops and trousers. I see them as essentials, they are usually in uniform so don’t have a lot and have outgrown things, trousers too short.
Thinking of ordering some wool and knitting needles so I can produce something while trapped here.

cwtchesandprosecco · 30/03/2020 11:51

I’ve treated myself to some quite expensive skincare as I’m not spending the money I would normally spend on going out/ eating out/ outfits for those occasions.

icebearforpresident · 30/03/2020 12:46

I’m in a vicious cycle of going online to look for things then feeling guilty for looking and not buying anything 😆.

I had thought about buying a Nintendo switch for the kids but looked yesterday and the price has shot up to about £500 so that definitely on the back burner. I’ve ordered some pyjamas for the kids as my eldest took a growth spurt and doesn’t have any that fit properly anymore and treated myself to a pair as well.

I’ve lost a stone over the last few months (which has probably gone back on since working from home started!) and my bras really don’t fit well anymore so I should order some but it just feels weird to be buying clothes just now.

Realistically though I shouldn’t be buying anything as I have no savings (thankfully DH does). For now I’m working from home on full pay but I don’t expect that to continue for more than a month or so before I get furloughed so I’m trying to spend the absolute bare minimum. Any wages left at the end of the month will go towards my credit card debt and/or paying the balance on the new fridge we bought on credit a few months ago. For me this whole situation has made me want to clear our debts as quickly as possible, the credit card would have been paid by the end of the year anyway but if I can get it cleared in the next few months I’ll be much happier.

Scruffyoak · 30/03/2020 12:47

Yes :(

Tonyaster · 30/03/2020 12:48

No. Barely spending anything.

WendyWalking · 30/03/2020 12:49

No
I’ve bought nothing besides the very basic foods and groceries.

apples24 · 30/03/2020 12:52

Have spent a lot on gardening supplies but otherwise desperately trying to avoid spending.

Dollywilde · 30/03/2020 12:52

To be fair, it's a good point about the things we're saving money on. I really feel for everyone who's struggling at the moment but bearing in mind that £400 a month goes on travel for us (two London travelcards from Zone 4), we're definitely saving more than usual, which with maternity leave coming up at the moment is a godsend. We'd cut down most of our 'going out/fun' spending anyway but the each month of saving our commuting spend (and I suspect there'll be two or three months of no commuting costs) equates to an additional £50 a month on ML.

WinterCat · 30/03/2020 12:53

No, I read a very sobering message from a delivery driver about all the unnecessary trips they are doing and the additional exposure that causes to them and everyone else they deliver to.

I’ve got two children whose birthdays will be fairly non existent in terms of gifts and typical celebrations this year but we’re alive and well.

I do have several things in my online baskets ready to order once things are safer and we no longer are under essentials only instructions.

I8toys · 30/03/2020 12:54

Mostly on food, stuff for easter - we were meant to be in Munich on easter sunday so trying to recreate a bierkeller at home. Birthday cards and presents for any happening during lockdown.

Tonyaster · 30/03/2020 12:55

My delivery driver is really struggling. He says most of the new orders are for clothes. I've asked my three teenage dds not to buy any for the time being.

LaneBoy · 30/03/2020 12:59

No. I bought the pens I’d been saving for and a couple of bits a few weeks ago knowing I may not have another chance, but other than that I’ve not spent on anything other than food really.

There is lots of craft/entertain-the-kids stuff I’d like to get but I’m trying to just use up what we have, we are being more careful to save clean recycling for junk modelling etc. It’s really making me think about what I spend unnecessarily in daily life.

DH is getting the odd thing in the shops when he’s there anyway, for example he was in B&M for some cupboard food and mouthwash, and picked up Blu-tak so we can put the kids’ pictures up as they’ll be doing more craft - that way it’s not an unnecessary journey or an online order needing handling etc.

itssquidstella · 30/03/2020 13:02

I've bought a new bedding set and two Hush tops from John Lewis (had a voucher to use up), and frivolously just spent £225 on Sweaty Betty. I'm going to try to be good now...it's not like I'm spending money on anything else at the moment, though!

Spidey66 · 30/03/2020 13:04

Less, as I don't like the idea of putting drivers etc at risk just so I can have an adult colouring book to entertain myself with.

mamatobabybears · 30/03/2020 13:20

I’ve ordered some summer clothes for the children, which they needed, jigsaws, books, craft stuff, garden stuff.... some I would’ve bought anyway and some not, but like every other family, we aren’t usually home this much!

JamesBlonde1 · 30/03/2020 13:24

No. Not going anywhere, don't need anything. Got a house full of stuff to occupy me.

LaneBoy · 30/03/2020 13:34

Re clothes I’m slightly worried about when the toddler outgrows her age 2-3 stuff. For that age I was well prepared - bought in advance in sales as I saw stuff, and was lucky enough to have a vast amount of hand me downs. I do think we have a few months left in this stuff though so should be fine, and it’s not like it matters if she’s in stuff that is too small as long as it isn’t uncomfortably tight. If I really need to I’ll just order absolute basics from wherever is still open online I guess but hopefully it won’t come to that

MistyIsland · 30/03/2020 14:59

Nopes...

I’ve barely spent anything apart from some colouring pencils and colouring books.

Most of my spending money is being spent feeding us all

I like the idea of a colouring book, have a couple somewhere and you've prompted me to find.

Regarding delivery drivers, many are self employed and really glad of the work. I've recently had messages from people who are setting out doing deliveries locally (small family run business), and asking if I would use them. It's not something I would worry about just now, op, having a job of any kind is so important.

inthekitchensink · 30/03/2020 15:36

Usually a frivolous spender, but completely the opposite now, and sorting out/using up all sorts. Bought plenty of craft stuff for dd in January for the new year & she’s fine for clothes. I’m not wanting anything, which is very strange!
