How are you disinfecting groceries?

Can see that it’s possible to wipe down bottles/jars but how do you clean a punnet of fruit or a loaf of bread?

Virtue signalling twaddle. I wash hands after putting groceries away but that is it. So relieved things will be back to normal soon, sometimes the OTT obsessives make you wonder about your own sanity. I have an infection control role at work, none of my colleagues behave like this.

ReleaseTheCracken · 06/03/2021 12:12

I'm not.

Nightbear · 06/03/2021 12:14

Only gas mark 4? That’ll barely singe the bugs.

Inastatus · 06/03/2021 12:16

I’ve never done this. I just wash my hands after putting stuff away.

thereisonlyoneofme · 06/03/2021 12:17

Im in the CEV group but I have never disinfected my shopping, post, door knobs etc. Okay so far !

SunshineCake · 06/03/2021 12:18

If it's any help we haven't disinfected the shopping or the dog's paws and we are all okay. We wash hands before cooking and after bathroom trips, walking the dog and gardening etc.

thereisonlyoneofme · 06/03/2021 12:20

Mind you I have in the past poo picked my horses stable without gloves on Blush

Silenceisgolden20 · 06/03/2021 12:20

@Nitpickpicnic

Definitely take measures to disinfect groceries coming in, or else what’s the point of the other measures?

I consider everything coming in to be ‘red’, and I have to get them ‘green’ before touching or using them. Different protocols for different surfaces, but basically I put the shopping bags somewhere cool/cold overnight (using gloves). Basically the shed, or garage concrete floor. Then spray them down outside bags, then inside with bleach solution. Fruit & veg get a dip in soapy water then rinsed & dried. Lots of hand washing, and some stuff straight to the freezer.

I’ve also changed suppliers for some products to be sure fewer hands have touched the food. Like eggs from the farmer rather than the supermarket.

You should see the palaver I go through to get petrol into the car...

I don’t think it’s OTT, or mental health driven. It’s just science, y’all. No point staying 2 metres from people but then touching the same surfaces as 1000 other people have that same day.

That's not ott? Are you real? Who the heck has time?

My God, the world has gone mad.

AlwaysLatte · 06/03/2021 12:20

For over a year I was cleaning everything with a bleach solution, but now that it's been a few weeks since my ECV parents had their vaccinations I've finally stopped. Putting the shopping away is so quick now!

anamazingfind · 06/03/2021 12:21

Not done anything and not caught the virus, so not starting now

tillyandmilly · 06/03/2021 12:21

I just buy some of those antibacterial wipes from the pound shop and wipe them down it only takes a minute or two!

Silenceisgolden20 · 06/03/2021 12:21

@XDownwiththissortofthingX

DH, DC's, the car, the shopping, whole lot goes in the gigantic industrial autoclave on gas mark 4 for 80 minutes.
Grin only 4??
XDownwiththissortofthingX · 06/03/2021 12:23

Don't want to damage the car

Nightbear · 06/03/2021 12:24

I have disinfected the dog but that’s because she ate horse poo not because of Covid.

LondonJax · 06/03/2021 12:25

I'm not. They get home, go in the cupboard and are probably not used for a few days anyway. If I'm cooking I wash my hands before and after but that's nothing new as I've always done that (salmonella in chicken etc)

Tinned stuff is contained anyway so, if I'm opening it straight away it's only the minute possibility of Covid on the tin.

All fruit and veg have always been washed anyway and bread goes in the freezer as we make our own to cut for toast (just can't cut straight so we need the sliced stuff for sandwiches or you'd never taste the filling!)

OverweightPidgeon · 06/03/2021 12:25

I’ve never washed fruit anyway and I haven’t been washing my shopping at all , we’ve all been fine .

JackieweaverhasALLtheauthority · 06/03/2021 12:25

never ever washed my shopping and haven't turned into a zombie yet-unlike this thread!

DenisetheMenace · 06/03/2021 12:27

Always wash fruit anyway. Heard some advice years ago (maybe on the Food Programme?) that if you couldn’t afford organic, you should wash fruit and veg with skins/peel in mild detergent and warm water, which destroys pesticide residues, then rinse.

Just leave soft fruit til next day.

We have a bread maker but occasionally have baguettes delivered: stick them in a hot over for 5 mins. (Nice and crusty then too).

I’m over-cautious though. I don’t think there’s very much evidence that Covid is passed on food. I remember a report at the very beginning, where the scientific bod said you would be far more likely to contract the virus from the plates at a buffet than the food.

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/03/2021 12:27

Everything goes in the washing machine at 60, so far I've gone through 12 washing machines.

Blueskytoday06 · 06/03/2021 12:28

I don't

Dowser · 06/03/2021 12:29

Just think when they’ve vaxxed the bejesus out of us you’ll be able to pick up industrial sized fogging machines in the middle aisle of Aldi

Enterthedragons · 06/03/2021 12:31

I’m not.

maddiemookins16mum · 06/03/2021 12:33

Gave up that malarky last July.

blue25 · 06/03/2021 12:35

I’m not. Just chill out & stop the madness.

Ah, the Aldi aisle of wonder. I’ve missed it so!
