How are you disinfecting groceries?

Can see that it’s possible to wipe down bottles/jars but how do you clean a punnet of fruit or a loaf of bread?

“ It’s just science, y’all. No point staying 2 metres from people but then touching the same surfaces as 1000 other people have that same day.”

Yeah anyone without the space, time or physical means to do all this is just too stupid to understand science really aren’t they?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/04/2020 08:21

We’re just leaving it all outside undercover for at least 24 hours. OK while it’s still cold.

But anything completely enclosed in plastic, e.g. a pack of mince, I’m washing with soap and water, like hand washing.

supadupapupascupa · 01/04/2020 08:24

Anything that can be is put into quarentine 72hrs, I adjust my shopping list to allow for this, fridge and freezer stuff straight into kitchen for washing in hot soapy water. I set the table up with towels to lay it out on after washing. Bags go back outside for 72hrs, surfaces and floors and door gets a good clean with soapy water. Any veg with holes in the bags needs to be washed individually.

The video I posted had a good analogy of imagine it’s covered in glitter and you want to get it into your house without getting the glitter on surfaces or yourself

It isn't a good analogy, because glitter sticks around forever. On the other hand, even on hard, smooth surfaces the virus dies within three days, quicker on other surfaces..

happypotamus · 01/04/2020 08:52

I'm not.
I will admit I was beginning to wonder if I was the only person not to. It is hard to know what is a proportionate response these days.
I am a nurse who is still travelling on public transport. My life is pretty high risk so the food packaging might be a slight risk but not compared to the rest of my life.

TheSultanofPingu · 01/04/2020 11:06

Regarding the mince packaging and washing it with soap and water, I just don't get it, sorry. Couldn't you put it in the fridge or freezer (making sure it's not touching things you will eat directly) then thoroughly wash your hands. I totally get it with loose foods such as apples etc, leaving them before eating, but where does it end? I'm honestly not minimising this. We have a global pandemic on our hands and it isn't going away any time soon, but we're gearing ourselves up for some serious issues around cleanliness here.

Hercwasonaroll · 01/04/2020 12:40

Has there been any cases of corona passed on through shopping?

adaline · 01/04/2020 12:51

But anything completely enclosed in plastic, e.g. a pack of mince, I’m washing with soap and water, like hand washing.

Why not just put it away and wash your hands afterwards? Unless you're licking the packaging I'm not sure why it's so risky?

supadupapupascupa · 01/04/2020 13:46

I'm either doing it or i'm not. We decided to wash the shopping so we do all of it. The kids can't be trusted to wash their hands, so everything is washed

Danini · 01/04/2020 13:52

Put the bread in the toaster it will kill any germs.

mencken · 01/04/2020 15:31

ambient items go into quarantine for at least 24 hours. I will be less sloppy and make sure tin tops are cleaned before opening.

freezer items went into a plastic bag before going in. Ditto fridge items.

bread was quarantined 24 hours and then transferred to the previous bread bag in the bread bin.

shopping done with gloves on, thorough wash when returning home, countertops disinfected. Can do no more!

Pishposhpashy · 01/04/2020 15:32

I'm not. That way madness lies. It took me ten years and three suicide attempts to conquer my OCD and I'm not risking going back there again. I prefer to accept the negligible chance of contracting covid from my groceries.

ElektraPlektra · 01/04/2020 15:32

1. Spray packages with alcohol - think they use vodka
That won't work, it's not concentrated enough.

Are there really any reports of people getting coronavirus from their groceries?

I'm not disinfecting anything at the moment and am not worried about it either.

TimeAintNothing · 01/04/2020 15:34

There are no documented cases of anyone contracting CV19 from their groceries or food packaging.

Ghostlyglow · 01/04/2020 16:33

I'm not. Just washing my hands.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 01/04/2020 16:34

@ElektraPlektra - Fair point about the alcohol content.

Not sure how it can be documented about how virus was transmitted. There were also no reported cases of transmission via takeways during the lockdown in Wuhan - think I read this on the WHO web site - but unlike a dodgy tummy after a meal, more difficult to pin point.

MotheringShites · 01/04/2020 17:01

I’m not either. I refuse to live like that.

Easilyanxious · 01/04/2020 17:50

Like others taken me a while to get my ocd under some kind of control so I don't want to be going washing all my food or quarantine it .I'm washing fruit etc and just washing hands after putting away , before eating , lot of stuff won't get touched for several days anyway as can't eat all at once . I haven't seen advice telling is to do all this , or have I missed it ?

maddy68 · 01/04/2020 17:55

Either leave them for 36 hours or wipe over with some diluted bleach

Inkpaperstars · 01/04/2020 19:36

We could never leave food outside here. We don't have any outside space but if we did the foxes would eat it. I just read about someone local to me who got an Amazon fresh delivery left on his doorstep but it was stolen before he could get to it. Very depressing to hear that people are stealing like that. It wouldn't have been the foxes because they aren't good at carrying boxes.

madroid · 01/04/2020 20:24

You wouldn't know if someone contracted CV via the virus on groceries or post. Bloody hell, they are not even tracking cases at home or their contacts, never mind shopping.

For what it's worth, I'm washing with soapy water or decanting or quarantining as appropriate.

I hate putting shopping away so I'm buggered if I'm going to faff about bleaching and washing my mince.

Ain't nobody got time for dat shit

You make time if you're shielding.''

Not necessarily. I'm CEV, shielding and I've never done this. So you can't generalise like this.
