How to disinfect strawberries?

133 replies

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 27/03/2020 13:53

I bought them on impulse forgetting what was happening.

Sterilised everything I’d bought, but stuck on the strawberries. Can anyone help?

A little white vinegar in with some cold water

Just a rinse will be fine surely?

I keep seeing threads where people are sterilising/disinfecting/bleaching their groceries. Are they doing the same to their clothes every time they come in from shopping/exercise? And their shoes, and hair? What about the post?

We're being incredibly careful (latex gloves when out which go straight in the bin at home then a handwash, wiping door handles etc with antibac wipes etc) but is disinfecting shopping really necessary?

Ha Ha you are joing?

DaphneFanshaw · 27/03/2020 14:04

Oh gosh, I would have just given them a rinse.

Milton Australia has full instructions in it but essentially cap of Milton in 4/5 litres water. Leave in for 45 seconds (iirc) and then rinse in cold water and dry. They last for weeks at a time.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/03/2020 14:12

I’ve used Milton in the past, when washing them for little Gdcs.

If you don’t have any, and aren’t happy with just a rinse, how about making a lather with hand soap, giving them a good swirl in that, and (obvIously) giving them a good rinse afterwards.

SoupDragon · 27/03/2020 14:15

You used Milton on your strawberries???

ShirleyPhallus · 27/03/2020 14:18

I’d use a solution of 1 part bleach, 2 parts baking soda, 1 part vinegar and 1 part lighter fluid.

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/03/2020 14:19

Yes milton will do it

QuimJongUn · 27/03/2020 14:53

@ShirleyPhallus 😂

GuyFawkesDay · 27/03/2020 14:53

Erm. Warm soapy water, rinse?

MikeUniformMike · 27/03/2020 14:56

Pop them in the dishwasher** when you next run it, or boil wash in the washing machine.

** Make sure that you haven't inadvertently left the loo brush in.

I just chucked mine in some gin - alcohol kills things right 🤔

SaigonSaigon · 27/03/2020 14:59

@MikeUniformMike can't stop laughing 😆

Parker231 · 27/03/2020 14:59

Just a rinse. Same as usual- if I remember.

Nixee2231 · 27/03/2020 15:04

Im washing my fruit and veg with soap 😮

MikeUniformMike · 27/03/2020 15:04

Make strawberry daiquiris with the strongest rum you have?

Parker231 · 27/03/2020 15:06

Am thinking it’s Pimms night with strawberries in it!

bloodywhitecat · 27/03/2020 15:08

You could do what my mum used to do and soak them in Milton. I was 17 (I left home at 17) before I realised that salad vegetables, fruit and unwrapped sweets did not need to taste of bleach.

Whenwillthisbeover · 27/03/2020 15:08

I’ve just eaten them straight from the packet, and the same with raspberries. I’m doomed.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 27/03/2020 15:09

@MikeUniformMike 😂

Gingerkittykat · 27/03/2020 15:10

Are strawberries not prepackaged? I would have thought the chances of the virus living on fruit from being picked to packed to transported to sitting in store would be zero.
