How to disinfect strawberries?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 27/03/2020 13:53

I bought them on impulse forgetting what was happening.

Sterilised everything I’d bought, but stuck on the strawberries. Can anyone help?

We are going to drive ourselves into nervous breakdowns, we can't keep this up!
Milton on strawberries?
Leaving post in the sunshine?!
Jus ping straight to a shower TURNED ON BY SOMEONE ELSE

(The proverbial 'we'. I, for one, would just rinse my strawberries as usual)

Codswalloped · 27/03/2020 16:05

Has disinfecting strawberries always been a thing?
Or just in these current times?

ElektraPlektra · 27/03/2020 16:05

Can't you just put them out in the sun for 24 hours and turn them once? You said yourself that's what you do with anything that's hard to wash.

I can't believe anybody puts their strawberries in Milton. We just rinsed them.

wowfudge · 27/03/2020 16:06

@ShirleyPhallus what with Ocado et al struggling with demand, where are you buying industrial quantities of lighter fluid these days?

Baaaahhhhh · 27/03/2020 16:07

Most people l know are like this

Errrr... literally no-one.

Jeleste · 27/03/2020 16:07

I would be more worried about eating bleach, than catching the virus from a strawberry Confused
Do people really do this to their food?

springiscoming12 · 27/03/2020 16:07

Wow, that’s a whole new level of crazy!

Tiddlytubbies · 27/03/2020 16:09

People Milton their strawberries? 😂😂😂 this can't be true?

WobblyAllOver · 27/03/2020 16:11

I let the dogs lick them first and if nothing happens to them then it's safe to eat.

That made me chuckle.

OP I think I would rather eat junk food than strawberries washed in Milton.

Some very strange people ideas on MN.

AnotherMurkyDay · 27/03/2020 16:13

@WobblyAllOver

Yes, but then I didn't find the need to sterilise my fish and chips either. Although maybe the vinegar did it anyway

diddl · 27/03/2020 16:14

Make jam?

LemonySippet · 27/03/2020 16:17

DH is a very high risk cancer patient and we've been given a whole booklet of advice on what to do.

Nowhere in it does it say anything about bleaching strawberries Confused

Have a little common sense people.

RogueV · 27/03/2020 16:18

Fucks sake

Bestoption · 27/03/2020 16:25

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince

I didn’t buy berries because I didn’t fancy having to soak them in miltons - but all the other fruit &veg went in. I do rinse them after though (unlike baby bottles)

If others want to eat fruit & veg handled, coughed or sneezed on by people possibly carrying the virus, let them crack on if they’re feeling robust enough not to need a ventilator if they get Covid 19. It would be nice if they could do it without the bitchy comments though)

I’m washing/disinfecting everything that comes into the house, it’s not that difficult. I could do without the shitty comments though that’s draining 🙄

I’m highly likely to die if I get this before there’s any treatment available & possibly even when there is, so I’m taking every precaution I possibly can.

I fail to see how trying to stay alive brings on such scorn🤷🏻‍♀️

Stay safe 🌷

MadameGazelleIsMyHomegirl · 27/03/2020 16:29

The Emoji - I don’t think you’re being ott. This thing is highly contagious and lives on surfaces inc paper, clothing, plastic and metal for days. Yes, we might all ‘get it eventually’ but what we are all trying to do now is flatten the bloody curve so people don’t die needlessly due to lack of fucking ventilators.
Seriously, this is why people like emoji are taking their clothes off at the door. If I was a teacher I’d be doing that too.

Lynda07 · 27/03/2020 16:34

Just wash them well in plain water in a sieve and dry with clean kitchen paper. You don't need to disinfect them, or raspberries. You're lucky to be able to get them! I used up my last several days ago.

I would suggest tinned but tinned strawberries are really not very good though you could I suppose mix them with some other tinned fruit., you probably don't get many in a tin. I have one in the cupboard. Tinned raspberries are lovely.

Hercwasonaroll · 27/03/2020 16:51

Which anaesthetic consultant gave that advice? One from Facebook per chance?!

MiracletoCome · 27/03/2020 16:56

Maybe it’s easier to buy tinned ones if you are having to do this to them

I just rinse my fresh fruit under the tap

viques · 27/03/2020 16:59

You are buying strawberries in March? I think the Milton will probably only enhance the flavour, they will be tasteless. Save the money you spent on the strawberries, and the Milton, and wait until they are in season.

Mind you, there might not be any one left in the country to pick them, I imagine that the double whammy of Brexit and Corona has done for the UK soft fruit market.

midwestspring · 27/03/2020 17:06

Disinfecting bought veg was part of everyday life in Mexico.
You could use heavily diluted bleach, the cartons had instructions or buy pre mixed solutions like these

They are also sold in my US supermarket although we have a reasonable Hispanic population so it may just be a habit.

Diluted vinegar can also be used but I don't know if that works?

How to disinfect strawberries?
GulliBelle · 27/03/2020 17:08

Cat has been out, tried soaking him in Milton. Now on hold to 111.

unchienandalusia · 27/03/2020 17:09

I've just fallen through the rabbit hole haven't I.

QuimJongUn · 27/03/2020 17:10

Letters I pick up with gloves and put outside as the virus degrades in sunlight. I do the same with anything else not easily washable. Leave them out for about 24 hours and turn them once

What about the letters actually inside the envelopes? Do you repeat the process for them?

If I’ve been to work, I strip off at the door, clothes in a plastic bag, and straight into a shower turned on by someone else

What do you do if there's no one in? Do you stand there in the nip til someone rocks up?

Seriously. If people are actually living like this (and I don't know anybody who is) everyone will be loopy in a fortnight.

PineappleDanish · 27/03/2020 17:10

Bleaching strawberries.

The world has gone fecking mad.

Just stick them in the fridge and leave them overnight if you are really worried about a less than miniscule risk of catching corona from your punnet.

Seems like all the "ewwww homemade cake, how gross and unhygienic" people are infecting everyone else with their nonsense.

Wash your hands. Practice good food hygiene. But seriously people. There is no need to sterilise, disinfect and bleach everything and anything.
