How to disinfect strawberries?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 27/03/2020 13:53

I bought them on impulse forgetting what was happening.

Sterilised everything I’d bought, but stuck on the strawberries. Can anyone help?

DP's just brought me back some strawberries.

They're in a plastic container with a lid - no corona could get anywhere near them even if Coughy McCoronaface of Coronaville were the shelf stacker immediately after coming back from his 11.30am coughing Break.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/03/2020 19:16

Is lettuce and pea soup a thing?
It is, I once read a recipe by Nigella Lawson for lettuce and pea soup, it sounded delicious! Didn't try it though.

It’s more of a braised lettuce with peas, not quite a soup.

It’s lovely, very light and fresh. Not sure about virus content though.

I* would have thought it's obvious - nuke 'em Hmm

It isn't particularly hilarious, it is just a fact of life for millions of people who live less privileged lives than Brits.

@midwestspring

What is the difference between lightly bleaching your fruit and bleaching your fruit? Shock

I'd like to say this as scientific fact but its merely an observation. Surely people who aren't overzealous with cleanliness will have stronger immune systems than those who do things like..... urm..... bleach their fruit?

Willow2017 · 27/03/2020 19:25

Cat has been out, tried soaking him in Milton. Now on hold to 111.

Omg i am having such a fit of the giggles over this🤣🤣🤣

amandalives · 27/03/2020 19:25

We've had a lot of strawberries recently. I'v just rinsed them as normal, sure I read the virus didn't last long on food so I figured after being in the fridge overnight I didn't need to do anything extra.

@Crunchymum I now feel like I've accidentally put myself forward as an expert fruit bleacher 😂 and may not have the scientific credibility for this.

By lightly bleaching I meant using a heavily diluted solution rather than neat out of the bottle.
The bottles of bleach in Mexico had instructions and pictures for veggie bleaching as well as the ones for floor washing etc.

I'm just pissed of with lots of people laughing at OP for suggesting something that is pretty standard in other less privileged countries than the UK.

In terms of reducing your immune system I guess it is least worse option, the infections you can pick up aren't great for you either.

chatterbugmegastar · 27/03/2020 19:32

TURNED ON BY SOMEONE ELSE

Why?

Can't you just wash the shower controls with soap and water - as , you know, it's right there with you , in the shower , you know - where you are

Are you slightly mad?

ralphi · 27/03/2020 19:33

I think Helterskelter's idea with the vodka is the best, squash the strawberries it, a bit of fresh lime juice, touch of brown sugar...perfect.

No Milton.

Crunchymum · 27/03/2020 19:35

I appreciate that we are very privileged here in the UK @midwestspring (and it was only upon reading your reply to another poster I see you aren't based here)

The concept of fruit bleaching is alien to me, and I'm lucky for that!!

However, I stand by finding it incredibly overzealous in the OP's circumstances in my opinion

squashyhat · 27/03/2020 19:38

Why are you buying strawberries? They are out of season and will be tasteless.

EmpressMaudie · 27/03/2020 19:39

Most people l know are like this. And I’ve never ever been a clean freak!

Of course they're not. Good one, OP. Disinfecting the strawberries indeed!

LuckyAmy1986 · 27/03/2020 19:44

LOL

PineappleDanish · 27/03/2020 19:44

It isn't particularly hilarious, it is just a fact of life for millions of people who live less privileged lives than Brits.

I'm assuming that if the OP lived in some unsanitary hellhole on the edge of a rubbish tip in a mosquito infested swamp in tropical regions she would have mentioned that in her OP.

She is in the UK and posting on a UK website. What people do in other parts of the world is totally irrelevant in this case.

Advising people on the best way to bleach their strawberries is just feeding their anxiety and shouldn't be encouraged, IMHO.

WTFdidwedo · 27/03/2020 19:47

In catering we rinse soft fruit ie. raspberries, strawberries and blueberries and sterilise all other fruit/veg for the recommended 5 minute contact time. I would never do this at home.

midwestspring · 27/03/2020 19:53

@PineappleDanish I've suggested she would be better of making compote or jam as well as highlighting that commercial products are available for purchase to disinfect fruit and veg.
I wouldn't suggest that people randomly start bleaching stuff if they don't know what they are doing or what product to use, bleach is a highly toxic product.
But the basic idea that fresh fruit and veg needs disinfected isn't a ridiculous idea for many people ( and not all of them are living in some unsanitary hellhole on the edge of a rubbish tip in a mosquito infested swamp in tropical regions as you do so charmingly put it.

PineappleDanish · 27/03/2020 19:57

But it is a ridiculous idea for someone living in the UK! And by encouraging her with your tips and how-to's, you're reinforcing the idea that what she's doing is logical and sane.

Which it isn't.

SnoozyLou · 27/03/2020 19:57

*Pop them in the dishwasher when you next run it, or boil wash in the washing machine.

Make sure that you haven't inadvertently left the loo brush in.

😂

Crinkle77 · 27/03/2020 19:58

Ive just eaten them straight from the packet, and the same with raspberries. I’m doomed.

Me too

Pop them in the dishwasher when you next run it, or boil wash in the washing machine.

I expect someone has done something like that - but the fruit would have to be in a bottle of vodka.

(No idea how that would turn out, don't waste your fruit and vodka trying!Grin)

SunsetBeetch · 27/03/2020 21:33

Boiling with sugar should remove any virus

But sugar comes in paper bags! Can't be bleached! So you'd have to pour out the sugar, strip naked, burn your clothes, have a shower in neat bleach, zoflora the entire kitchen, make the jam, then burn the kitchen down just to be on the safe side. You can't be too careful.

Omg this thread has cheered me right up Grin
