Following a conversation with DH... What is the best dinosaur. He says velociraptor. Personally I prefer Pteredons, but I don't think they are strictly dinosaurs. I'm rather impressed by giraffatitans too...

Dilophosaurus or Compsognathus

wanderings · 25/03/2020 07:43

My choice is in a poem I remember reading at primary school:

Triceratops was well-equipped with horns.
One on his nose, and two where his eyebrows ought to be.

We come at last to Trachodon,
who could swim very well, in fact.
He was very ducklike in the face,
I doubt he ever quacked.

Jokie · 25/03/2020 07:45

My daughter says: Diplodocus but I've always like the stegosaurus

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/03/2020 08:04

I love how diverse dinosaurs are. And I've found even more types to like.

DD (7yo) is trying to turn part of her bedroom into a dinosaur museum.

Hmmm. I've not got much time for Compsognathus. The bloody thief meant that poor old Drip had a miserable childhood after being kidnapped I may have read too much Tyrannosaurus Drip recently

Another vote here for the gentle Diplodocus. We don't watch Andy anymore which makes me sad. He's got an Aquatic Adventures series out now. I do have a a selfie of him and I though. That's not even a stealth brag. I'm putting it out there loud and proud.

Harakeke · 25/03/2020 08:25

T-Rex pisses all over the others. I can’t believe this is even up for debate.

YA all BVU

(So glad to see the non CV topic!!)

TeetotalKoala · 25/03/2020 08:33

T-Rex has those tiny pointless arms. It's all off balance. I can fully imagine T-Rex running and just falling flat on his big face because his great big head isn't being balanced by the middle section.

Prepares to get into a bunfight about dinosaurs

(My autocorrect changed that to gunfight, bit extreme)

Stilllivinginazoo · 25/03/2020 08:39

My D's professional opinion(ASD and obsessed) is iguanadon, known as thumbs up Dino for my benefit when he was first obsessing
Therizinasaurus(sp?) Is his second choice

HebeMumsnet · 25/03/2020 09:05

These are my favourite dinosaurs.

RedElephants · 25/03/2020 10:03

Woolly mammoths, altho I'm guessing they're not technically dinosaurs?

AngelaScandal · 25/03/2020 10:56

@TeetotalKoala jealous of your Andy selfie.
DS obsessed with ANDY’s Aquatic Adventures. I can’t cope with the fact that “Mr Hammond is the boss but it’s Jen that’s in the know”
WHY IS JEN NOT THE BOSS THEN
overinvested

TheChampagneGalop · 25/03/2020 12:50

The current portrayal of the velociraptor as small, cute and bird-like makes it my favourite.

Ankylosaurus - esp in andys dinosaur adventures where they took out a t-Rex. Definitely understated.

Bedroomdilemma · 25/03/2020 13:23

Duckme, that was a brachiosaurus I think. Very emotional movie moment for my DS...

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/03/2020 13:56

Triceratops. Easy.

This. WTF is wrong with the rest of you? It's clearly the best.

My DD developed Theory of Mind while watching Land Before Time. She went from not giving a crap about characters in films to "where are their parents" sobbing in Land Before Time. Lovely memory.

BillywigSting · 25/03/2020 14:20

Microraptor
Acheaopteryx
Dimetrodon

None of which are really dinosaurs.

Got a soft spot for trolodon too

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 25/03/2020 14:28

I'm also fond of the Quetzalcoatlus and the Megalodon if we're widening the criteria to creatures around at the time of the dinosaurs.

Ds used to love triceratops until he discovered it was a veggie eater. Now he's all about the carnivores. His little sister really likes them at the moment, curious if their eating habits will put her off once she's a bit bigger.

BinkySodPlop · 25/03/2020 14:33

I like lots of the herbivores that looked like they took no shit, and brushed off the carnivores like they were flies. Plus t-rex, mainly because of the inflatable costume you can now get and play "sumo wrestler" in. Possibly not the most scientific reasons.....

vampirethriller · 25/03/2020 14:37

Pterosaur. I would love to have seen one in real life, though I'm aware it would have eaten me. Can I also have Titanoboa?

Menaimum · 25/03/2020 14:44

11YO has always told me since the age of 4 that Spinosaurus is the very very best. Top predator on land and sea!

LaneBoy · 25/03/2020 16:22

Parasaurolophus. It looks funny (I have a soft spot for the underdog I guess) and it’s fun to say.

TheCrowFromBelow · 25/03/2020 16:59

Spinosaurus could eat a whole shark.
I miss reading the dinosaur books, we had loads - all of the Harry ones as well as brilliant pop up factual ones.
I liked the plieisaurs, elasmosaur and triceratops.

claracluck78 · 25/03/2020 17:24

I'm so pleased I'm the first to say Baryonx!

DS2 is adamant one day he will be a palaeontologist based at the NHM and has picked his office door already. He also, heartbreakingly, cried when he realised the NHM had to close its doors and we won't be able to go for a long time whilst he's off school.

AngelaScandal · 25/03/2020 17:52

@claracluck78 was due to travel to NHM last Friday with DS from Ireland Sad

Luckily we hadn’t told him about the trip
