Have you aged ten years overnight on a supermarket website?
Are you sticking to the 'two sheets' rule?
Have you had it with singing celebrities?
Are you yearning for what we will now call The Before Times?

If you've answered yes to any of the above, here's where you come to post threads about Naice Things - like ham and cats. Where The Virus That Must Not Be Named (TVTMNBM) is off-limits.

We'll do our best to keep the corona-free zone moderated - you do your best to chill out and gather strength. Flowers Brew

Keep using the normal boards for normal stuff, but here's where to come if you need a break. We're hoping everyone will see the value of having somewhere to get away from it all.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Oooh thanks for that, will do!

TSSDNCOP · 25/03/2020 08:19

We have a little bird in our garden. I cannot see him but he cheeps for hours. It's driving Dcat insane, her ears are swivelling like crazy, and she's clearly plotting his demise . We call him Chatty Bird.

RedElephants · 25/03/2020 09:57

I've managed to get two washes dried on the line instead of the tumbleydry! The smell of line dried clothes and sheets is divine

SnakePlant · 25/03/2020 10:56

Sorry i should have said to chop the carrots into manageable sized chunks. TSS thanks for pointing that out to anyone with spare carrots and an available alpaca.

SnakePlant · 25/03/2020 11:04

Love it hahaha Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2020 11:21

Presumably we shouldn't go around feeding random alpacas without the owners say so.

Apart from their guarding abilities, the only thing I know about alpacas (and other camelids) is that their antibodies have a different structure to other mammals, single domain VH chains, aka nanobodies. (At this point, either go Confused and move on or dive into Wikipedia Grin)

I've just noticed a peacock butterfly on my honesty.Smile

Noo, I thought they were kept for their wool

Well... about 20 years ago there was a meme (in the Richard Dawkins sense) that alpaca yarn and fibre was going to be the Next Big Thing. Lots of people with smallholdings or even big (like half an acre with an orchard) gardens bought a few alpacas with the idea of keeping the grass down and making ££LOTS.

It's lovely warm fibre, especially if it's mixed with wool for elasticity.

Unfortunately, the Alpaca Boom was short-lived. We reached Peak Alpaca 10 - 15 years ago, since when the price of the fibre has failed to soar and people have realised that they've got these large and non-profitable animals that need feeding. Hence, the proliferation of Alpaca Walks, Alpaca Rides and even hiring alpacas for weddings and parties. Life has given lemons to alpaca owners, and they're making lemonade.

theoriginalmadambee · 25/03/2020 12:13

Thank you @ThatLibraryMiss you learn something every day Smile. Still I'm happy for the alpaca walks etc. better than eating them i suppose.

Just had a quick google, apparently alpaca wool is warmer than sheep's wool, perhaps we should spread the word and give the poor alpacas a chance. I will definitely look out for it, I love natural fiber clothes.

SnakePlant · 25/03/2020 13:30

I live near a huge ex-Woollen mill near Bradford called Salts Mill. The guy who owned it, Titus Salt made his fortune when he discovered alpaca wool made the finest cloth going. No one else was interested in it at the time.

SnakePlant · 25/03/2020 13:31

He found a huge consignment of it stored in a warehouse and the rest was history.

Raera · 25/03/2020 13:38

I love Salts Mill, particularly the Hockney art

Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 13:42

Saltaire is just gorgeous. I’m really looking forward to going again once this is over.

TheQueef · 25/03/2020 13:42

What about dogs? Haven't we got any lovely mnet collies or poodles?

theoriginalmadambee · 25/03/2020 13:45

Wow SnakePlant Titus Salt really did it. Can't blame those who would try to copy him. Lovely he did good for his workers and love his name Smile.
