If there's total lockdown, can I order takeaway food?

Getting my priorities right 🥴🥴🥴🥴

No takeaways for me. It will be manic in all the places where various types of takeaways are cooked and bagged up. With all the big demand for them now, things might be rushed and panicky, and mistakes about preparation and all other stuff might go to pot.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 23/03/2020 19:43

@CloudyVanilla It's difficult to say. I'm in Italy and at first, online delivery was possible from a lot of shops that had been closed. Things have got more serious this week though and I have had a lot of emails from stores saying even online deliveries are suspended. Amazon is only delivery "essentials" (not sure what!)

Thereflex9 · 23/03/2020 19:43

@TangoWhisky she is 19, has recently moved to a new city and doesn't know anyone. I know it's all lovely people helping neighbours in some places, but elsewhere this is not the case, a lot of her neighbours have left for their home countries or gone back to their families elsewhere in the country, she's had no responses online. People seem very keen to help the elderly or vulnerable but not a teenager who is displaying symptoms. You think I'm being rude? I honestly do not understand why you've made that assumption, that was not my tone, perhaps you are projecting: "People are dying...

This is nothing... Wait till 2 weeks time.

Take away is not important

This virus can be passed in the packaging / people cooking it can have the virus

Christ sake".

I'm glad you're managing without takeaways, honestly, but she's got absolutely nothing in her cupboard given that until last week she was a pretty carefree teenager living off a limited 'student-esque diet' shopping daily. We are obviously sending her money to order food but until a delivery slot opens up, not much else we can do for her. She's miles away and we have someone with stage 3 CKD in the house so cannot go go her. You're being very rude about people who have little choice; risk infecting others, get a takeaway, or go hungry.

Snorkelface · 23/03/2020 19:46

Man on the news was saying that surface transmission was far less than coughing/droplets etc.We can wash our hands and not touch our faces and control transmission better. The virus survives for a day on cardboard but up to three days on hard surfaces (Plastic etc) and then it's up to you if it makes it into your system. Breathing it in far faster and harder to control.

CloudyVanilla · 23/03/2020 19:46

@Seventyone72seventy3 thank you for the insight :) hope you are doing okay over there Wine

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/03/2020 19:49

wow what a horrendous comment to someone who has just lost relatives

What comment are you talking about?

Lovemusic33 · 23/03/2020 19:49

Most take aways have closed here already and there’s only one that delivers her through “just eat” and I’m sure they will close too. Local pub is running a delivery service but I expect them to eventually stop too.

I know people are saying that take aways are not important but for me they can be a life saver, I’m a single parent with 2 autistic kids and live 10 miles away from a supermarket so if we go into lock down getting food will be more difficult (I can’t leave the kids to go shopping and I can’t take them with me). I have 2 more food delivery slots booked, after that I can’t seem to book anymore so I’m worried an a few weeks we won’t have much food.

Notwiththeseknees · 23/03/2020 19:51

On the way back from our visit to the supermarket (with our signed attestation) we were walking past the nice burger place, that is now takeaway only. It is open to the the street and one customer was there, female aged about 25, lolling all over the counter when she suddenly stood up, had a great big hacking coughing fit into her hand and then went back to lolling on the counter. We had collected burgers from there the night before. I felt a little bit sick tbh and we won't go back for the rest of our time here. I felt so sorry for the staff, who looked quite scared to be honest.

wishesmadeonstars · 23/03/2020 19:52

As I’ve said it’s not just about transmitting to customers but also the work environment- 15 or so instore cramped together in a small shop making food side by side closer than 2m apart and drivers in and out the doors, also cramped together very close whilst waiting for orders.

meonekton · 23/03/2020 19:53

And Scarlette, I really dislike people who use abusive language just because they have different opinions.
Just don't assume you are worse off than anyone. You never know. There maybe others who are struggling more so they prepare for the worst than you do. How unpleasant.

itstrue · 23/03/2020 19:58

I'm in New Zealand and we are about to enter lockdown. Takeaway shops are definitely to be closed. So only home cooking for us for the next month!

Devlesko · 23/03/2020 20:04

I don't think it will be considered as essential, somehow Grin

Namechangervaver · 23/03/2020 20:04

The last time I went into a sandwich shop the woman took money from one customer then started making a sandwich for the next without washing her hands. 😷

ScarlettBlaize · 23/03/2020 20:06

@meonekton And Scarlette, I really dislike people who use abusive language just because they have different opinions.

Ah well, I really dislike people who patronise others, assume they're incompetent idiots, and misspell their names. Guess we all have our little peccadilloes, eh.

Just don't assume you are worse off than anyone. You never know. There maybe others who are struggling more so they prepare for the worst than you do. How unpleasant.

I never said a fucking thing about me being "worse off than anyone". I said that we are holding out for takeaways as our only possible option for sourcing fresh veg, meat and fish over the next week, after you decided to tell everyone considering it that they aren't the wonderful brilliant super-prepared gourmet cook that you are.

Have a fucking Biscuit, why don't you. Home-bake it with some saffron, elderflower, chia seeds and essence de trou de cul if you prefer.

BonnesVacances · 23/03/2020 20:08

We ordered a takeaway tonight which was delivered and left on the step. We are going to try and order one each week to put a bit back into the economy.

TangoWhisky · 23/03/2020 20:09

@Thereflex9

The government have a website if you have symptoms and have no way to get food.

Gov.uk/coronovirus and see links

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/03/2020 20:13

We are going to try and order one each week to put a bit back into the economy.

That's what we're hoping to do. We've been going to 'our' Indian for over 20 years and I want to do my bit to try and help them. I've never worried about their hygiene before so I'm not now. The owner is lovely and I want him to have a business after all this.

dianebrewster · 23/03/2020 20:14

transmission via surfaces is a known risk, but less than person to person. One of my housemates is a retired anaesthetist, I'm in an at risk group, I'm forbidden from even opening the food delivery until he's washed the surfaces down. Even the ryvita boxes Shock. He recalls how he used to be shouted at by the theatre nurses when he inadvertently touched a sterile implement or surface. I'm learning!

If he wasn't here I probably wouldn't be so careful - but I am beginning to think it's worth that extra bit of (Paranoia) to care for those of us at risk. After all, it's only time being taken up, it doesn't cost more to take those extra steps..

meonekton · 23/03/2020 20:15

Scarlette, you attacked me first. I would have responded differently if you didn't attack me head on and called me a tool or tit. Yes, I have prepared enough, we have a lovely home cooked meal from scratch every day. Thank you. I love saffron and chia seeds, don't have elderflower though. Grin

TheCanterburyWhales · 23/03/2020 20:19

Well, while this thread went weird I enjoyed my takeaway (or rather, home delivered) pizza.
Don't know how it will be in the UK, and neither do any of the people on this thread being so authoritative and saying "of course not are you for real a takeaway isn't essential".

GatoradeMeBitch · 23/03/2020 20:20

I'm saving takeaways for when/if I don't have DS's approved of foods in the house. He's autistic and very rigid about what he will/won't eat. It will be upsetting if that avenue is closed off, I hope they are allowed to keep going.

ilikemethewayiam · 23/03/2020 20:21

My DH is a supermarket delivery driver and has been told they are key workers so I assume they will still deliver, but who knows anything anymore 🤷‍♀️

gallbladderpain · 23/03/2020 20:23

Aye sure let's all go to the takeaways and spread it there...why not. Meanwhile lots of takeaway workers aren't going to be able to take leave because they won't be paid for it and are in situations where they are risking their own health and those of vunerable people at home just because everyone else who is sat at home on their sofa with cupboards full of pasta can't be bothered to cook

People really need to sort their priorities !

TheCanterburyWhales · 23/03/2020 20:25

Rtft love.
The takeaways are delivered, we are keeping businesses on their feet, and when you've been in lockdown a couple of weeks, a weekly pizza to look forward to makes a difference.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/03/2020 20:25

Or your could look at it the other way, it could be the difference between some businesses surviving or going under.
