Ridiculous ‘calling in sick’ reasons

A member of staff has called in sick with a bit of a Hmm reason and it reminded me of a young member of staff years ago who called in sick with jet lag - they’d been to Ireland .

Any one else with daft reasons for calling in sick ?

I had a receptionist once who called in sick because she had to get her hair done.

I am a lecturer and I also had a student come to my lecture 2 hours late (it was a 3 hour lecture) because he ‘overslept’. The lecture started at 2pm. I’d been up since 5am with then 13 month old dd and commuted 3 hours to get there to teach so I was seriously a bit like Hmm .

Feeling a bit tired today

I remember a friend I had years ago called in sick to her bar job by saying she has accidentally eaten her housemates hash cake and was freaking out (they didn't buy it).

I also remember another friend saying she was having a breakdown and a different friend pretended to come on the phone as her psychologist.

I was once working for a huge nationwide company. One of the company directors was in our office for the day when he received a call from his wife to say she had hurt her toe! He left the office immediately in an absolute flap about it. I couldn’t believe it!

That reminds me actually, I once bleached my hair so badly that it fell out and I was late to work because I had to get what would now be called a pixie cut.

Nanasueathome · 06/03/2020 20:38

One of my staff called in to say she couldn’t come into work as she was having to help her uncle and aunt to polish the dance floor
They had recently taken over a social club and it needed doing

TDMN · 06/03/2020 21:25

Its happened TWICE at our work where someone's rushed off in the middle of the work day because their other halves have broken a finger.
(Like, if it was a bad break and they couldnt drive and were due to pick the kids up from school i'd kind of get it but that was not the case...)

Sofacat · 06/03/2020 21:35

I feel bad enough calling in sick with a genuine reason, how do these people face their colleagues when they return to work?

I once had to call in "sick" because my front door broke and wouldn't lock, and the workman sent by the housing association removed the whole door handle and then left it like that. So I had a door with a big whole in it that I couldn't lock, except for a little bolt at the top. So I didn't feel safe leaving my house like that.
The mad thing is the bloke didn't come back for three days! Luckily I had a long weekend so I only had one day off. My work sounded a bit sceptical so I showed them a picture of the hole in my door with the sunlight shining through it.

I think they still thought I was taking the piss, though. Grin

Someone couldn't come in because their tortoise had broken it's leg.

jmh740 · 06/03/2020 21:43

My colleague was late this week cos she couldnt find her fixodent and wasnt coming to work with no teeth in lol

Indella · 06/03/2020 21:44

A colleague phoned in sick as her uniform was wet. This is NHS so you’d hope they would have the sense to dry their uniform!

CheesecakeFactory87 · 06/03/2020 21:45

My staff member called in sick two days ago after being "sick in the night". This staff member has been ill for various fictitious ailments 10 times over the last 6 months.

What he doesn't remember. Is that he posted pics of the late kick off on the football the same night that he was apparently sick on. Idiot.

Just like last time when he had a "migraine" and photos of him appeared in Amsterdam.

Someone is getting their last warning. If/when they come back after their football sickness.

Someone I worked with called in sick FOR NIGHT SHIFT IN A HOSPITAL because their girlfriends grandma was ill (same town, not particularly sick) Never forgave him

Halo1234 · 06/03/2020 21:47

I started a new job and had just moved to a new city I got on the wrong bus to work. I was running to catch it and had miss saw the number . When it started to go a different route I though weird it must go a bit of a longer way to pick up more people at this time. By the time I realised i was half way out of the city to the next town along. Had to get off wait on a bus back then get another bus to my work. Took half the morning. My boss said "next time just let us know u have slept in. Didnt realise I was on the wrong bus that's a new one" I was telling the truth tooBlush

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/03/2020 21:48

I had a colleague who was late in and missed the team meeting as she was “making love with my boyfriend”.

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/03/2020 21:51

I can beat all of you.
I was assistant manager for a high street chain in Brighton. We had two stores in the town.
I was called in to manage the other store one day because the manager had phoned in sick.
Her reason was that her chakras were out of line.

Brighton......

cobwebsoncornices · 06/03/2020 21:54

I had a boss who didn't come to work one day as the nanny and the housemaid were both off sick and his wife couldn't cope. They did have 3 children under 5 but the au pair and housekeeper were still at work so I wasn't entirely sure what the issue was.

LouisaJenny · 06/03/2020 21:54

A colleague called in sick once as she wasn’t feeling beautiful that day.

Her father was very senior, so no one said anything...

strawberry2017 · 06/03/2020 21:59

Someone where I used to work called in sick with chicken pox, it was genuine I believed but the funny thing about it was they thought they caught it from eating chicken 🐓 🤣

EmmiJay · 06/03/2020 22:00

I called into work sick saying I'd sprained my ankle coming down some stairs when I really had sore feet from two days straight of Notting Hill Carnival. Does this count?🤣

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 06/03/2020 22:03

I took the sick calls for staff at our school. “I’ve had a terrible nights sleep” single, no kids, (posted photos of stag in Prague), another one took two weeks off when her horse died (not saying this isn’t an awful thing, but compassionate leave for partner’s death was 2 weeks), one was late two days back from holiday. He said his father was taken ill, later found out he’d got arseholed in Ibiza and missed his plane.

GogoGobo · 06/03/2020 22:14

Last week one of my team emailed in sick to say they felt odd and had a severe loss of appetite because they hadn’t wanted any breakfast. WTAF?!

Hittapotamus · 06/03/2020 22:20

Phoned in with swine flu. A couple of weeks later phoned in with actual swine flu. Bad luck!

Because she had a headache. The next day told me she'd gone for a head massage to help with the headache. Nice nails I said. Oh yes the head massage place also does nails so I treated myself Hmm

kiki22 · 06/03/2020 22:25

I worked with a woman who was late every day because her child took up to 30 mins to get dressed and she couldn't you know get her dressed because she didn't want to stifle her independence. They also couldnt get up earlier because they are not morning people. She was an entitled arse in general.
