Do you experience ASMR?

I'm interested to know how many of you experience ASMR? I do, but haven't met anyone else who does (not that I've asked many others - just family members)

OP posts:
Antibles · 01/03/2020 15:04

Yes. It's very nice and relaxing. Smile

TwoZeroTwoZero · 01/03/2020 15:08

Only when people play with my hair or tickle my back. Occasionally when watching someone have their face brushed, like in a facial.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 01/03/2020 15:13

Yes, I do. Usually when watching people do things like cleaning or wiping. It was ages before I knew it had a name! No one has ever mentioned it to me irl

cyffredinol · 01/03/2020 15:21

I always assumed it was something everyone experienced until it was given a name and talked about.

It's mainly voices that do it for me, but I also get it from a head massage/tickle.

Yes @Antibles it's so relaxing isn't it?!

OP posts:
BearSoFair · 01/03/2020 15:24

Very occasionally, only from someone playing with my hair. I watch videos for relaxation even without the tingles though!

lazylinguist · 01/03/2020 15:30

No, not in the slightest. I've looked at the various types of ASMR videos out of curiosity, and all I get is mildly irritated (especially by the ridiculous whispery-voiced ones). I find it baffling tbh.

TabbyStar · 01/03/2020 15:31

I used to as a teen but don't seem to get it now.

peacebypeace · 01/03/2020 15:34

I do. I first noticed it was a "thing" when I was 11 and my teacher whistled whenever she made an 's' sound, but had no name for it.

Echobelly · 01/03/2020 15:37

Yup, I get it with 'descriptions' of massages or just soft-spoken attention type scenarios. I don't get it all that much from sounds and not from people making repeated lip sounds which I just find annoying in certain ASMR videos (although I might like those sounds if said as part of normal speech). It's interesting how different it is for different people.

Antibles · 01/03/2020 15:37

Yes cyffredinol I swear it's great for the blood pressure. There are some amazing ASMR videos on youtube, aren't there?

OP I also wonder what proportion of people experience it. I used to assume it was everyone as well.

RedIsWhereItsAt · 01/03/2020 15:40

Any links to good videos at all?

sparkli · 01/03/2020 15:43

I do, too. It's strongest when someone massages my head, strokes my hands or inner arms, or tickles my feet. I also experience it by watching ASMR videos on YouTube of people doing these things. Watching videos of people icing biscuits also has the same effect.

lightnesspixie · 01/03/2020 15:44

I love it.

mogloveseggs · 01/03/2020 15:46

Yes. Hand movements mostly
Dd likes mouth sounds which give me the rage

JillAmanda · 01/03/2020 15:48

My favourite subject 😁

Certain voices (like the lady in this video)

Mouth sounds/eating - SAS ASMR on YouTube and her mum Nana Eats are good but some people get annoyed by eating sounds so would hate it! I love watching them eat sea grapes and honeycomb although they’re hardcore about the honeycomb... it may not be for the squeamish 🐝

Watching silicone baby enthusiasts opening boxes. I think it’s the exaggerated care they take along with the hushed voices.

Massage videos - Lita is the queen of these.

JillAmanda · 01/03/2020 15:55

Re: the benefits - I used to have a Fitbit and it occurred to me to see whether my heart rate changed when I was tingling.

My heart rate always tends to be quite fast - approx 70bpm at rest.

It was amazing - within 30 seconds of the tingles starting my heart went down to 60 which is unheard of for me. Back to reading normally - up to 70 again. ASMR - back down to 60. The lowest I got it was 55. If I win the lottery I’ll sink loads into researching ASMR.

WrinklesShminkles · 01/03/2020 15:56

I do, mostly from voices or repetitive hand movements; occasionally from eating sounds (blessed). I haven't found that ASMR videos labelled as such work for me. But I do find occasional non-ASMR videos that work. It annoys me when people assume it's a sexual feeling - ASMR is the complete opposite of arousal IMO.

DjMomo · 01/03/2020 15:58

The ASMR videos do not work because it is recorded and played on your screen so it’s kinda diluted. You have to experience it in real life, it’s different then.

BentNeckLady · 01/03/2020 15:59

Birdsong does it to me .

Whathappenedtothelego · 01/03/2020 15:59

I don't get it, but often have an extreme negative reaction to ASMR videos, particularly the soft voices, and also things like people playing with my hair, stroking me etc.

A strong physical sense of rage and frustration, my whole body is tingling with it, strong desire to escape, or else to break things.

I avoid watching the videos!

tobee · 01/03/2020 16:00

Is this ASMR? I got it in an art class when people were painting my portrait at school???

Waxlyrically · 01/03/2020 16:02

Yes it’s so relaxing. Soft speech, (not whispering), tapping or crinkling sounds and form filling/paper shuffling work the best for me. There are some great videos on YouTube including one on diabetic shoes that always sends me to sleep!

JillAmanda · 01/03/2020 16:03

See, most deliberate videos anger me - the whispery ones usually make me want to punch something.

JillAmanda · 01/03/2020 16:04

I really recommend the Alexander Technique one I posted. It’s unintentional which is always better 😁

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 16:04

Yes
I like ASMR Zeitgeist and am very happy that Heather Feather is back.
