Do you experience ASMR?

I'm interested to know how many of you experience ASMR? I do, but haven't met anyone else who does (not that I've asked many others - just family members)

The best is someone playing with my hair, or a head massage with one of those prongy head massagers. I also find things moving between my toes really good.

Sounds do nothing for me at all. I don't even enjoy music or find it relaxing.

PanicAtTheTesco · 01/03/2020 21:07

Yup, although the more try-hard whispered videos on Youtube don't do it for me. I prefer a trip to the hairdresser, the odd radio 4 reading/poetry, or an hour watching QVC Blush.

kateybeth79 · 01/03/2020 21:07

Yes, ever since I was a kid. I remember getting tingles from the sound of Jamie Lee Curtis' shoes on the pavement in My Girl, the sound of pages turning and from people whispering etc. I discovered whispering ASMR videos on YouTube about 9 years ago and they really helped with my insomnia.

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 01/03/2020 21:15

Only very specific voices. NONE of those whispsery things, which make me murdrous😂
Sadly the dental hygienist who came to visit the school every year and was amazing, has long since left .

Chesntoots · 01/03/2020 21:48

I'm afraid I find it seriously irritating to the point where I lose my temper.

Damntheman · 01/03/2020 21:52

I do :) I get it strongest with head massage, soft stroking on my back and certain chord progressions in music. Voce8 and their lux aeterna is incredible for it. But a lot of things set me off! I consider it balance for my crippling misophonia.

Chesntoots · 01/03/2020 21:53

Having said that I do like bird song, fires and waves on beaches, but it is just relaxing and not the tingly sensation people describe. I think it's more to do with peace and quiet than anything else really.

Craftycorvid · 01/03/2020 22:05

Yes. Tapping sounds, so rain on, say, a skylight or a window (at night when I’m all snug in bed, lovely) and people typing on a laptop or computer. When I was a student I used to get quite hypnotised in the shared study areas when people were busy typing around me and it was otherwise quiet and peaceful. I don’t get the whispery woman folding towels though - just find all that mildly creepy. Grin

noodlezoodle · 01/03/2020 22:05

Yes. When I was a kid I used to get it from having my feet measured, and have always had it from hairwash/haircuts and eye exams.

My favourite videos are from Gibi, Whispers Red and The Water Whispers but I try not to watch them too much as it lessens the effect. They are fantastic for relaxing or sleep though.

TrippingOnSunshine · 01/03/2020 22:19

On a tangent, I'm wondering if you fellow ASMR people get this thing: if someone hurts my feelings I get a shooting pain down my left arm and it makes my hand really hurt. If it's really bad my hand goes weak too. Just wondering if this is related?

Crinkle77 · 01/03/2020 22:40

I always loved the sound of someone writing on a hard surface. Had no idea it was a thing until I read about it in here a couple of years ago. I agree with another poster bar the sounds the internet don't give the same singles as in real life.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 01/03/2020 22:47

I do, my favourite type is listening to nails clicking on keyboards, glasses, plastic cups etc. I watch a lot of YouTube videos, specifically makeup declutters and the sound of the packaging all clinking together in sped up mode is bliss!

PerfidiousAlbion · 01/03/2020 22:47

How interesting, yes I do.

It’s generally soft, high, young, female voices. Beauty therapists are normally a guaranteed result.

It also works with, normally, Eastern European accents too. Just so soothing.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 01/03/2020 22:52

Oh! And of course hearing the rain and wind. The back of our house is most affected by the weather whereas in our room at the front you rarely hear the rain.

When it’s particularly windy or rainy I sleep in the kids room, sends me straight to sleep

I don't know if I experience ASMR all that strongly but I LOVE the videos and have done for years, since Lita and her massages Smile

Im not a huge fan of the ones where its just sounds like someone eating popping candy or the inaudible whispering or the really ridiculously fake role plays.

I like the really realistic role plays where it's just soft spoken talking, or my current favourite is the unintentional ASMR like medical exams etc - look up Dr Gill on YouTube!

And I love that Alexander Technique video posted upthread - 'lovely little guidelines' Smile

tobee · 01/03/2020 23:55

Yes QVC facials too! We got cable for a while years ago and I loved the beauty hour with Alison What's her name, lovely sounds of the gels etc!

I remember when head massages became popular at the hairdressers and someone at the sink next to me was asked if they'd like a head massage and the reply was "no thanks!" ShockI had to stop myself from shouting "what!!!!" and offer to have hers for her, lol!! Grin

ActualHornist · 02/03/2020 00:43

Those ASMR videos of (normally) a pretty young woman do nothing for me. I also don’t like cooking sounds.

Some songs, I get prickles all over me. Don’t Stop Me Now, the opening bars, do that for me. I don’t listen to it too often as the effect diminishes.

CorianderLord · 02/03/2020 01:10

Yes, from some videos and also a couple of RL things.

One woman at Primark folded the clothes so nicely it was so soothing and also my colleague when she eats her lunch for some reason... I think it's the plastic fork she uses but it's odd because eating noises normally give me the rage.

I like Latte ASMR, Ting Ting and Gentle Whispering

JillAmanda · 02/03/2020 07:49

The chink of the spoon in the bowl when my stepson eats pudding sets me off. Only him though sadly.

JillAmanda · 02/03/2020 07:50

@CallofDoodee she has a wonderful voice doesn’t she! “Soften and widen... and widen...”

PerfidiousAlbion · 02/03/2020 09:46

I cant watch the rile plays, they make me cringe, I also dont like the noise/tapping/crunching ones or anyone who’s too contrived or who makes a smacking mouth noise when they whisper, so much so that you cant gear what theyre saying.

I think Marie Kondo should do ASMR videos!

Maturestudentneedshelp · 02/03/2020 10:17

Yes! only one in my family though. I prefer unintentional asmr (although can get tingles from gentlewhispering if it's spoken and Danaasmr)

Look for the chess post match conference ones. It's normally three woman reviewing a match 2 of them have just played and it's bliss!

CallofDoodee · 02/03/2020 10:25

There is a bit of a 'community' in the comments of some of the unintentional ASMR videos now as well, and some of the comments are really funny:

Navy suit for war
Putapitopaper
Sandwich breath

Grin
ActualHornist · 02/03/2020 10:28

@JillAmanda ‘soften and widen’ ??? Is she talking about a cervix?! Grin

MsChatterbox · 02/03/2020 10:33

Yes, usually when people have a nose through my things. Whether they're browsing my wardrobe, looking through my planner. Just taking an interest in my stuff. I'm sure I sound like a narcissistic Grin
