Do you experience ASMR?

I'm interested to know how many of you experience ASMR? I do, but haven't met anyone else who does (not that I've asked many others - just family members)

I find some of the videos relaxing. I was watching one of someone wrapping presents last night which made me feel very sleepy.

I quite like Rapunzel, there's one of her cleaning a suit with a brush which also makes me sleepy.

I don't care for the ear cleaning/tapping/etc.

anon2020202020 · 01/03/2020 18:20

I like it but the whispering freaks me out.

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2020 18:22

YY the whispering does nothing for me.

Titsywoo · 01/03/2020 18:26

Yes I always experienced this. In school it was teachers writing on the blackboard, kids rustling through their pencil cases. I get it at work a lot when certain people are leaving through paperwork or typing. There are various odd things that set me off but not loads in day to day life. It just makes me feel a bit dozy and relaxed. I do watch some videos but there aren't many that work for me. It seems to be a very personal thing. I hate the stuff where they are looking into the camera and brushing "your" hair. I prefer watching them doing things to other actual people like a massage. I like itsblitzzz on youtube and some of the gentlewhispering ones is the sort of thing I like

PastelRainbows · 01/03/2020 18:30

Bob Ross!!!
And in real life I love cleaning my ears because you get the same crackly noise and the satisfaction of tingly ear scratches.

RebeccaCloud9 · 01/03/2020 18:31

Yes and I love some of the videos on youtube, but NOT the ones where the speak seductively or weird ott whispers. That makes it creepy to me.

TrippingOnSunshine · 01/03/2020 18:45

I do. I always have done and only just found out it's a real thing. I get it from soft voices (I even kept up a conversation with a Jehovah witness at the door the other day because she had a lovely soft voice) also my hair being played with but also if I read a list of boring things. It's hard to explain but like a list of things for sale in a local paper or something...

Lalallama · 01/03/2020 18:50

Yes. I used to get it when the cleaner cleaned our office at work. I was gutted when they changed to do the cleaning out of hours, so I no longer have my weekly tingles.

I find the videos relaxing but don't get the tingles much with them.

I have mentioned it to people in real life and they all look at me as though I'm insane. I would love to find out what makes some people experience it and not others. What do we have in common?

tobee · 01/03/2020 18:52

There's something extra nice when people do it behind you iyswim, or when you're doing something different!

cyffredinol · 01/03/2020 18:55

@PastelRainbows Yes Bob Ross, I forgot about that one! I'm going straight to YouTube to see if he still gives me the tingles.

Yes, soft talking and medical role plays especially. Crinkles and brushing etc does nothing for me though

adjsavedmylife · 01/03/2020 19:04

Yes! Didn’t know it was a thing. Mostly at the hairdressers.

On a related note, does that wierd squirmy extreme tiredness have a proper name?

OneTooManyBathtimes · 01/03/2020 19:11

I've just looked it up and I think I experience it slightly from watching and hearing bone cracking. I love watching osteopath and chiropractor videos. I've got my follow up appointment on Thursday and I just KNOW I'm going to feel like I'm on a cloud. I was so relaxed last week after my first appointment.

I have a lot of horrible noises though. I've got some sensory issues that may be because of undiagnosed ASD (waiting for diagnosis) so I'm really not sure yet

ExpletiveDelighted · 01/03/2020 19:12

I'd never heard of it till recently. I don't think I get it, but there are a few songs that do make me shiver and brushing my hair often makes me sneeze.

KTD27 · 01/03/2020 19:13

Yes! I love it. Used to get it as a little girl from watching the librarian stamp books and check them out. ASMR southern sounds does a lovely librarian whispered one which I love.
I am also a big fan of zacksworld asmr as he does things like paperwork fill ins and check ins and that’s another situation which I find particularly relaxing.
Good night moon does the best role plays
And RIVER asmr is the most hilarious camp amazing ASMR channel and he’s amazing

magicalpeach · 01/03/2020 19:26

Yes. The tapping noises do it for me the most

MulticolourMophead · 01/03/2020 20:05

I don't get ASMR from sounds, but I'm partly deaf which may be why.

I do get it from hair brushing, etc and head massages (the new apprentice at the hairdressers has firm hands 😁). Also, I get that tingly feeling from watching people doing pencil or pastel drawings, so often stop to watch those portrait artist working in tourist areas.

cinderellaaaa · 01/03/2020 20:14

I do. Tingles occasionally, but mostly it just makes me feel sleepy. In terms of videos I only get it with Gentlewhispering though, but in real life sometimes too.

I like whispers, soft voices, tapping, page turning. Especially when accompanied by hand movements.

ThickSock · 01/03/2020 20:41

Yes I do. As a little kid I was always nodding off or going into a stupor when other children were rustling through crisp packets, pencil cases, the sound of their pencils on paper and close whispering. It’s no wonder i got so few qualifications as I was in a daze a lot of the time .

I had no idea it was a thing though till many years ago when I googled ‘paper bags rustling sound’ and came across clips of things which then led to finding ASMR channels. I dislike most channels though on the basis they are too forced, exaggerated and involve too much lip smacking, mouth sounds.

My favourites are:
Nana Rori ASMR, Rappeler ASMR and Whispers Unicorn (not recent videos though).

I used to like Heather Feather, ASMR requests and Gentle whispering but the last two seem to do too many mouth sounds that annoy the life out of me.

I am so dependent on it though that for the last 6 years I haven’t been able to sleep without listening to it. I usually fall asleep mid video. No one I know gets it and thinks I’m bonkers/eccentric/weird.

tobee · 01/03/2020 20:50

Just remembered I get it (or did a long time ago) from shiatsu massagers when they did this sweep down my head at the end. Always assumed it was part of the experience.

SpokeTooSoon · 01/03/2020 20:51

I can’t get it from those specific videos - it has to be a by-product of something else.

Make-up and skincare videos are good for this. Also watching skincare segments on QVC!

SpokeTooSoon · 01/03/2020 20:53

The head massage at the hairdressers always gets me as well. They never quite spend long enough on one area though so I’m left unsatisfied! Sorry- that makes it sound sexual and it’s NOT AT ALL!

Titsywoo · 01/03/2020 20:55

Ooh yes @KTD27 - definitely agree with the librarian thing!

I agree most of the videos feel too forced and I don't really get tingles from them either but yes they are relaxing.

MajesticWhine · 01/03/2020 20:55

I get it in professional situations - I am a therapist - usually with a softly spoken client who has a strong accent. It is a bit distracting.
I can easily reproduce the sensation by watching youtube videos of weird whispering women.

ThickSock · 01/03/2020 20:56

SpokeTooSoon I love the head massage at the hairdressers. I think there should be an option of paying a bit more in 5 minute increments for longer massages. It absolutely is never long enough,.
