Who's looking forward to Pancake Tuesday?!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 24/02/2020 10:50

Even though I spend ages at the cooker dishing up all the pancakes and have to wait ages for my own, I am so much looking forward to them!

Working FT so ours will be dinner, though we never go the savoury route. It will be a selection of lemon & sugar, golden syrup, raspberries, banana, nutella, raspberry jam and (squirty) cream - just thinking about it makes me happy Smile

So, what will you put on yours?!

I use the plastic bottles normally and just add my own water, shake and pour in the frying pan. I’ve made a new year resolution this year to think more about my environmental impact so will be making from scratch!

Wish me luck! We always just have lemon and sugar though as toppings. Don’t do chocolate or ice cream etc... might change it up this year and use lime instead.

A savoury pancake? Isn’t that an omelette? Lol.

aroseaday · 24/02/2020 10:56

I've never had much success with pancakes I must admit but I do love the fluffy American style ones with blueberries 😋

I'm going to buy a fresh pancake batter from M&S (Grin) and use that instead as at least then they'll hopefully turn out okay and I won't have to buy any baking ingredients that will sit in my cupboard for another year or so.

Notso · 24/02/2020 10:59

My kids are trying to persuade me to do them for breakfast and dinner but I'm not sure!
It has to be lemon or butter and sugar for me but they like Nutella or Maple syrup and banana.

safariboot · 24/02/2020 11:00

Yum yum yum!

DM has a crepe recipe she's been using for decades. She'll prepare the batter then I'll fry them. I can never get it as thin as a crepe ought to be but it still tastes good. Just the classic sugar and lemon for us, nothing fancy.

ItWillBeBetterInAugust · 24/02/2020 11:02

Sammi38 a savoury pancake is a pancake with pulled pork or cheese and bacon or creamy mushrooms (or obviously 101 other options) as a filling, nothing to do with omelettes.

Coffeenofilter · 24/02/2020 11:02

Best day of the year.

My family think I'm ridiculous. But they always get overt it enough to consume vast amounts of pancakes. I do go a little OTT with providing toppings...

I don't do a turkey at Christmas. Pancake day is my day ;)

WinterCat · 24/02/2020 11:02

Yes, me! I just have lemon and sugar on mine as well.

Pilot12 · 24/02/2020 11:03

I hate them because everybody eats one at a time and as soon as somebody finishes theirs they want another but some people haven't had one yet. I end up having mine last when everyone else in done and then it's me that has to clear up the mess. I end up having to make at least three batches of batter too.

Coffeenofilter · 24/02/2020 11:03

*over

CaptainHammer · 24/02/2020 11:04

Yes! Best day of the year! Fresh squeezed orange on mine 😋

ayvasili · 24/02/2020 11:04

I go the whole hog-My dd likes english pancakes with Nutella, ds likes American pancakes with maple syrup, I sometimes make a pancake lasagne-using English style pancakes as the "pasta" and then layer up with mince and cheeses etc, and I eat my pancakes with lemon and sugar for dessert-LOVE pancake day!

ItWillBeBetterInAugust · 24/02/2020 11:05

Anyone can make pancakes - my 13 year old son is the pancake maker in our house. I'll be at work 12 noon until 10pm so if anyone is making them it'll be ds1.

lazylinguist · 24/02/2020 11:05

A savoury pancake? Isn’t that an omelette? Lol.

No, not at all! If you go to a crêperie you'll find a whole main course menu full of pancakes with delicious savoury fillings. They are made with pancake batter. Omelettes are just egg!

SweetPeaPods · 24/02/2020 11:06

Anyone know if I can make the batter this evening and keep it in the fridge so it’s ready for the morning? We won’t be able to have them tomorrow tea time as DH at work and DC got cubs, beavers and football training.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 24/02/2020 11:06

Yes and no. We're going to have savoury ones with bacon, spring onions and cheese followed by baked apple and whipped cream desert ones.

But I also promised dh that I'd give up Pepsi Max for lent and I'm addicted to the stuff so I'm dreading the fact that I'l basically be having my last Pepsi Max with my delicious pancakes.

ItWillBeBetterInAugust · 24/02/2020 11:08

Pilot12 make them all before anyone starts eating - stack them with pieces of baking paper in between. Count them when you're done and announce how many there are each. Obviously triple the batter recipe and make enough in one go.

Notso · 24/02/2020 11:09

I always make my batter the night before if were having them for breakfast @SweetPeaPods

ActualHornist · 24/02/2020 11:09

I just have lemon on mine, but the boys like lemon and sugar or Nutella.

I’ll be making a stack tonight to me microwaved for breakfast, otherwise like @Pilot12 says I’ll be making and dishing them out, having to ensure I’m doing it in order, and then I’m last - normally when the batter is all gone so I get one mishapen one.

Skyejuly · 24/02/2020 11:09

Reginabambina · 24/02/2020 11:09

I’m sorry but it feels so wrong not to call it shrive Tuesday (can you tell that I went to a catholic school?)

ItWillBeBetterInAugust · 24/02/2020 11:09

SweetPeaPods yes. They actually cook better if the batter has been in the fridge. Just whisk before you start frying.

ActualHornist · 24/02/2020 11:09

@ItWillBeBetterInAugust you don’t need to put paper between them, they don’t stick together.

Reginabambina · 24/02/2020 11:09

*shrove

Skyejuly · 24/02/2020 11:10

I just say Pancake Day

BarkandCheese · 24/02/2020 11:17

I’m going to be down American style pancakes with crispy bacon, bananas, blueberries and maple syrup. I use this recipe www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/american-pancake it works perfectly, even DH who loves pancakes and spends a lot of time in the US, says it tastes authentic.

We’ll be having shrove Wednesday though because DD has drama on Tuesday and has to eat early. She’d never forgive me if she missed out on pancakes.
