Who's looking forward to Pancake Tuesday?!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 24/02/2020 10:50

Even though I spend ages at the cooker dishing up all the pancakes and have to wait ages for my own, I am so much looking forward to them!

Working FT so ours will be dinner, though we never go the savoury route. It will be a selection of lemon & sugar, golden syrup, raspberries, banana, nutella, raspberry jam and (squirty) cream - just thinking about it makes me happy Smile

So, what will you put on yours?!

I don't do a turkey at Christmas. Pancake day is my day ;) I love this Grin

I should say, I make pancakes A LOT already, but never with the variety of fillings that will be available tomorrow! I will make an huge batch of batter in the morning and then we'll be good to go as soon as we get home tomorrow evening. I find the batter needs to sit a while anyway, so this is good. Batter will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Also, I make ours thin like crepes, I'm not as keen on the thick types.

Has anyone managed to melt a mars bar into theirs?? I've heard it before and it sounds divine I'm a pig but not sure how to actually go about it.

I love Shrove Tuesday too-pancakes are delicious! I have such lovely memories of having pancakes once a year growing up; my children don't know how lucky they are having them often!

I do fluffy American ones in the morning (they have these every Friday anyway, with porridge oats in the mixture to hopefully make them more filling), served with a bit of syrup and some strawberries and blueberries. In the evening we'll do crepes. I'm going out shortly to buy a second pan as it's so tedious staring there doing one at a time, and I have the world's slowest hob!

I love pancake day. Dh always makes proper homemade ones though. Would never have them for breakfast. Time we have them depends on what time he is working. Tomorrow he is in from 3pm so we will have them early afternoon, one ds is home from nursery.
I only ever have English style ones with sugar and lemon (the best way I think). Dh likes both English and American style. Ds im not sure, last year he refused to eat any. Hopefully he will at least try one this year.

For anyone who'd like to make them a bit more nutritious (although with the eggs & milk they aren't that bad really) I substitute some of the flour for ground almonds. No difference in taste or texture.

Good idea on buying a 2nd pan - I might just do that!

After holidaying in Brittany we bought my husband a crepe maker. It is so good for proper fine crepes and came with the T shaped stick that creperies use to make the crepes fine and even. The savoury crepes I have had in Brittany were made with buckwheat flour. I love fresh lemon juice and muscovado sugar on mine.

caperplips · 24/02/2020 12:33

i love them very thin, crepe like with butter, lemon and sugar sprinkled and them rolled up like a cigar.

We also like them with very thin grilled smoked crispy bacon and maple syrup.

Very occasionally I make mushroom and spinach a la creme and fill the pancakes with that - delicious!

We don't eat nutella anymore due to palm oil. But I may melt some non-palm oil chocolate for dd and she can have with chopped strawberries

Jupiters · 24/02/2020 18:36

Nutella, squirty cream and strawberries for me!

TheMemoryLingers · 24/02/2020 18:39

It's about ten years since I've made them as my husband had an evening job so there was no point making them just for myself. He's got a different job now so I'll be making them tomorrow. Jif lemon and sugar on mine - DH was mumbling something about strawberry jam for his.

ChubbyMummy12 · 24/02/2020 18:46

I like the thin one with lemon and sugar, or melted chocolate and banana. Or American ones with blueberries, or maple syrup 😍

Parsley65 · 24/02/2020 18:55

We have savoury pancakes (main course?) with ham & cheese then sweet ones for 'pud' with fresh lemon juice and sugar 😁
My mouth's already watering!

firstimemamma · 24/02/2020 19:06

Very excited for tomorrow. Nutella, Jam or Lemon and sugar here. Grin

Going to attempt to use food colouring to make rainbow pancakes but a bit nervous as never attempted it before! Anyone done anything similar and how did it turn out? Going to aim for a couple of red, a couple of blue and a couple of green pancakes.

Shamazing · 24/02/2020 19:36

Scotch pancakes here - with fruit and maple syrup. Lovely.

YogaLite · 24/02/2020 19:53

Just made ours, gf and dairy free, I add banana, ground seeds/nuts, cinnamon and apple chopped up into small pieces/shredded. Sugar on top, yummy.

This is 3rd time this month, love pancakes.

FireandFury · 24/02/2020 19:56

We have all of the ingredients ready. We have a few people coming over for dinner so will be putting together a pancake station for dessert. Toppings:

Cream, sugar, lemon, strawberries, raspberries, Nutella, Reece’s pieces and probably golden syrup.

oopsdaisy · 24/02/2020 20:01

@Shamazing ooo how do you make scotch pancakes 🥞 I could just google but if you have a recipe...

FriedasCarLoad · 24/02/2020 20:22

We have pancakes every Tuesday in Lent (thus completely missing the point of Shrove Tuesday and Lenten fasting!)

Different each time - once savoury, once scotch, once American, etc. But Shrove Tuesday is for the pancakes I grew up with - lemon juice and sugar to begin with.

Random18 · 24/02/2020 20:27

If I make them tomorrow, I'll make proper ones. Not crepes. But pancakes.

And I'll use Self Raising flour

TheNavigator · 24/02/2020 20:36

I've already made the batter & it is resting in the fridge ready for tomorrow. We traditionally do an all-pancake pig out tea, with lemon and sugar, or syrup or nutella. After the farce of trying to toss them. Love it Grin

H1978 · 24/02/2020 20:40

We had some after dinner tonight thanks to Aunt Bessie, anything to make like simple ha ha

We had lemon, honey, sugar and Nutella

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/02/2020 20:40

That'll be Shrove Tuesday, then... 🙄

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 24/02/2020 20:46

Oh god I've never once managed to toss successfully!

Apologies to anyone offended by my referencing Pancake Day. I forgot lots of people also call it Shrove Tuesday, but honestly nobody around here does. Anyway my thread is about the joy of pancakes and the options for toppings...

OP posts:
Shamazing · 24/02/2020 21:45

@LadyMonicaBaddingham I call it Shrove Tuesday too. Though you do know it's ok for people to call it what they like don't you? There's really no need for the rolly eyes, unless you're 14.

MulticolourMophead · 24/02/2020 23:39

DD likes making crepes, she can do those. Meanwhile, I like using a thick American style batter and cooking them in the sandwich toaster. You get little fluffy triangles that can be picked up with your fingers and dipped into whatever topping you choose.... mmmmmmm

MadisonAvenue · 25/02/2020 02:52

I love pancake day, I prefer dinner on that day to Christmas dinner.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 25/02/2020 10:33

Steady on @MadisonAvenue! I adore pancakes but not sure anything could come close to my Christmas dinner.

Huge jug of batter made this morning and resting in the fridge. I can't wait to get home to over-indulge! I even picked up a bag of mini marshmallows to add to our toppings!
