Social media phrases you can’t stand

Was browsing Instagram last night and someone I went to school with posted a photo of her and her grandparents and captioned it ‘My grandparents are better than yours’. Well the last of my grandparents passed away last year so...guess hers are better? I know I know it’s supposed to be lighthearted but I’ve seen it loads of times, ‘my friends are better than your friends’ etc. I just don’t like it! Are there any phrases you see on SM that get on your nerves?

*"So, a lot of people have been asking me about my skin care routine ..."
Followed by an interminable sales pitch for pointless products #ad #gifted #spon

I bet no one ever asked them about their skin care routine. I can't why you would.*

Could you 'helpfully' offer cheaper high street alternatives in comments?

Really, anything with a hashtag is annoying.

42isthemeaning · 22/02/2020 11:39

#making memories 🤢

TulipCat · 22/02/2020 11:44

Making memories and blessed are instant unfollowings for me!

applebags · 22/02/2020 11:48

"Because __" without saying of. As in "My hair looks awful because rain".

It's so annoying!

DodgeRainClouds · 22/02/2020 12:09

#rantover
Usually used at the end of the most boring story about how they were wronged somehow 😡

Housewife2010 · 22/02/2020 12:25

"Bingeing on boxsets" - sounds disgusting. "Stream yourself silly". Why are they even called "boxsets" anymore? Why not "TV series"?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/02/2020 12:31

Smashed it 🤮

AmazingGreats · 22/02/2020 12:45

On Instagram you can follow a hash tag. So say you really like cleaning you can follow #cleaning and if you really like mason jars or green juice you follow #masonjars or #greenjuice. So if you really want to find all the other pictures of blessed famalams and mama bears then you follow that too. It's quite helpful when trying to find ideas for birthday cakes or kitchen tiles or cocktails or whatever. It can be helpful when your on a diet and want some inspiration of what other people on the diet are eating, or not sure how to decorate your kids bedroom. Some of them are a bit cringe worthy but I think mostly it's a bit of fun, like the animal face pictures and things. I don't think everybody takes themselves that seriously tbh. The mean ones I don't like though and when people re-post things mindlessly that are actually offensive to people, but I struggle to get offended if it's not actually offensive.

AmazingGreats · 22/02/2020 12:47

The word "bae" does make me shudder a bit though.

Aulwan · 22/02/2020 12:48

Can someone explain the dead/dying thing? Is this something different than talking about a relative's death? As my username suggests I'm old and I don't do social media but I'm really curious about this 🤔.

AmazingGreats · 22/02/2020 12:50

It's meant to mean "dying with laughter" but now it's just "dying" "dead" "actually dying right now" or just a coffin emoji

ClubfootMaestro · 22/02/2020 12:51

@Aulwan I’m no expert as I don’t use it but I think it’s to express an extreme reaction to something funny as in:

Just seen Bieber slated Cara Delevigne #dead

ClubfootMaestro · 22/02/2020 12:52

I hate “do better”, used when self righteous pricks on Twitter think someone’s tweet hasn’t been intersectional enough or something eg

“As a white woman, it is not for you to say you didn’t enjoy writing by a WOC. Do better”.

Aulwan · 22/02/2020 12:52

Thanks!

Threelionsandalioness · 22/02/2020 12:54

#squadgoals
#couplegoals
#Thisone
Why oh why Hmm

thismeansnothing · 22/02/2020 12:55

Bloody 'tap to tidy' and the like.
Well done you place was a shit tip and you tidied it up. Congratulations. I don't get this one at all.

Threelionsandalioness · 22/02/2020 12:55

Oh and bae...really Confused

Bbq1 · 22/02/2020 13:06

I don't do sm but when I did briefly years ago I hated the cryptic posts about being 'sad' which were invariably followed by flurries of, "You ok hun?"🙄Then the original poster replies"Pm me". Ffs. Pure attention seekers. If it's private then why put your supposed upset out there initially? Then we're all supposed to sit there thinking "Ooh, I wonder what's up with so and so, wonder what the PM says". No, we're not.

AmazingGreats · 22/02/2020 13:19

Oh yeah the ones with the location as A&E and no explanation

LuckyLickitung · 22/02/2020 13:25

"This boy"/ "This girl" accompanied by a photo. Yeah, what about them???

minnie465 · 22/02/2020 13:28

All of these are why I am no longer on social media 🙈

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 22/02/2020 13:33

Most of the cheesy hastags - such as #livelaughlove

But, more importantly, when people use the word 'of' instead of 'have' (not sure this applies to social media - just written messages in general)

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 22/02/2020 13:33

@thismeansnothing - oo I blooming love before and after tidying up photos!

MuseumOfYou · 22/02/2020 13:50

These are all a mystery to me; I've obviously got likeminded miserable old bats on my feeds!

Mrsjayy · 22/02/2020 15:31

They were saying "This one" accompanied with chest slaps and teary eyes, it is escaping instaShock
