I love small cosy spaces

Small living spaces give me cabin fever. I don't live in a huge house, but I need space and time to myself, and I couldn't do that in a claustrophobic cosy home.

Verily1 · 20/02/2020 20:15

I’ve lived in a room in a shared flat where I didn’t like my flat mates so didn’t use the kitchen so I just lived in a bedroom with a shared bathroom for a year. Bed, chair, wardrobe, desk, bookcase, what more did I need?

JosefKeller · 20/02/2020 20:22

Because most people living in tiny spaces have no choice.

so what? People are still allowed to have preferences. Many people have made some choices too anyway.

FruityWidow · 20/02/2020 20:24

I currently live in a narrowboat. 47ft x 6.10 ft x 6.8ft and a lot of that is taken up by the engine under the stern deck.

FruityWidow · 20/02/2020 20:33

And no I don't feel cramped or get cabin fever cos my back garden is over 2000 miles long Grin

So?

Yes I could OP.
My current home although not in the UK, so warm sunny climate, is a converted caravan sitting on a gated plot with trees, a beautiful sunny patio and mountain views.
Its approx 26ft x 18ft, reconfigured to include 2 bedrooms a bathroom, a storage space/wardrobe and an open plan living area.
Well insulated with air con, easy to clean and cheap bills.
Bonus is it's a 20 walk to the beach.
What brought me here?
Well early retirement and need of an adventure.
Exploring a new country and learning a new language are a bonus.
I am now part of the community and a permanent resident contributing to the local economy.
Not off grid like a lot of the American tiny homes but it seems to be gaining popularity.
I think what appeals to most people is the easy no frills lifestyle which is what a lot of us grew up with.
There is also real community feel which I think a lot of people also appreciate.

I dream of being that frugal and tidy and happy without stuff that I could.

But I probably wouldn’t! I manage to stuff every place I lay my head with clutter and mess.

NemophilistRebel · 20/02/2020 21:25

I used to live in w tiny cottage and loved it

Out of all my houses it was my favourite

Brigante9 · 20/02/2020 22:32

Lord, no! We’ve just done up the kitchen with a huge leather recliner at one end, opposite is a big TV. I love the space and that it’s separate from the cooking bit of the kitchen. I like going upstairs to bed and into the utility room to do laundry etc. Couldn’t cope with a tiny house.

I've been to IKEA today and they do a good job of making tiny home living look appealing in their show room.

I remember watching a programme once which showed retirement age British ex-pats living in chalets in Spain. The chalets were tiny, but the people spent all of their time sitting out in communal areas with their neighbours/friends and so only really slept in the chalets. If I lived somewhere with a warm climate, where you could utilise the outside, it would be okay.

Another programme I watched featured people living in chalets in the UK. Most people struggled with the lack of space. I guess the chalets could be nice if they were planned to make best use of the space, but most of the people living there wouldn't have had the money to invest in the solutions to make the space work.

My grandparents lived in a double wide mobile home ( in the States) and I definitely could live in that with just DH. It had two double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, walk in closet, utility room, kitchen, dining area and living room. I bet the square footage was probably similar to the average three bed semi here in the UK.

I don't think I'd like to live in anything smaller really. The IKEA rooms are always appealing though. I think it's because they have no personal possessions.

JosefKeller · 21/02/2020 14:46

take a tape measure though

IKEA rooms are really not that small, especially compared to British properties

Moreisnnogedag · 22/02/2020 12:56

@Quinto5 where do you live?? Sounds fab!

Jux · 22/02/2020 17:00

I need lots of room for my books; thousands of them. And then there's DH's vintage guitar collection, dd's antique sewing machine collection, all their books.

No. We need lots of space!

Shockers · 23/02/2020 10:31

I wondered too @Quinto5- sounds fabulous to me!

xQueenMabx · 23/02/2020 18:49

If it was just me I definitely would. I love small spaces and don't really like having too much "stuff". With my partner and 2 kids though.... definitely not.

stargirl1701 · 23/02/2020 19:00

On my own yes. With DH and DC no.

Quinto5 · 28/02/2020 23:09
