You know that you see in you tube
Like sheds/caravans

Moose people do it for a certain amount of time

Alone yes. Not happily but I could do it. But not with my family.

speakout · 20/02/2020 18:13

Sorry but I find al the "teeny tiny cute house" all a bit distasteful.

Many people do this part time only, have a real 5 bedroom house somewhere as a back up, or doing it for fun on daddy's trust fund.

What larks living in a yurt/longboat/wooden caravan for 5 months of the year.
The housing crisis in this country means that many families are living in overcrowded tiny homes through no choice.

It is not fun.

Middle classes " downsising" into a cutsie house is about as entertaining as pretending to be poor for a week for jolly japes.

My dream is his n hers next door to each other. I'd love a minimalist life with no stuff and no housework but I can't see it ever working if you were sharing such a small space

abitoflight · 20/02/2020 18:15

It's not just coats etc that take up space though
I have one drawe in kitchen for herbs and spices and I love Indian food so recently made a drawer just for Indian cooking spices. Add to that all the store cupboard stuff like jalapeños, different oils, types of beans, t toms etc I don't know how varied cooking would be without these to hand

Straycatstrut · 20/02/2020 18:18

I really love small living spaces. I think it comes from camping adventures as a child, gas lanterns and tiny stoves. All of us clambering into the car when it rained so much the tent flooded! I loved to make dens and hide in bushes and the woods. Caves at the beach.

I'm staying in a caravan with my 2 boy near the seaside in June. I love them because they remind me of the same adventure holidays as a child. I'm hoping to give the boys the same memories. When 3yo is older we'll stay in tents and yurts (bit scared of him escaping in the night atm!)

The very very detached tiny house/cottage is a dream of mine when my boys move out.

Straycatstrut Camping/clambering into a car on rainy nights sounds fun. Caves are too
Have you ever lived in a tiny place?

Huge difference.

Jux · 20/02/2020 18:33

Not enough room for bookcases and piano; otherwise lovely. Quick to clean!

spiderlight · 20/02/2020 18:39

I've got a friend in NZ who lives in one with three kids and a house rabbit. She has to be very very organised but she loves it. Not sure I could do it, though.

Ginfordinner · 20/02/2020 18:40

No. Too claustrophobic.

speakout · 20/02/2020 18:47

Depends on the climate too.

I lived in rural SE Asia for a while. Indoors space was a bamboo hut, with sleeping area and a private washing/toilet area.

All other activities were outside. Cooking, socialising, eating were done outdoors in an area with no clear boundaries that backed onto beach/forest. The monsoon only demanded thatched roofs over living areas.
Technically our house was very small- 15 foot square, but we only used that for sleeping or resting.

LunaDeet · 20/02/2020 18:50

Not a tiny house but definitely a canal boat. We have a small terrace as it is and I hope we never go bigger - I like the simplicity of small.

sonjadog · 20/02/2020 18:50

I work 5 hours from where I live and I have a 20m2 flat there that I live in for 3-4 weeks at a time. So in a way, I do live in a tiny space a lot of the time. I found it a bit claustrophobic at first, but it is fine when now I am used to it. You have to choose your furniture carefully and keep it tidy. I do have a house as well where I keep most of my stuff, so it isn't really tiny house living. But I have thought that I might eventually sell up the house and just live in the little flat.

hotcrossbun4321 · 20/02/2020 18:51

@speakout yes I agree - it seems a little distasteful to me. Like people who go to a poor country and marvel at how people are so happy with so little. I do quite like the general ethos of not getting too much pointless stuff though

GeraltOfRiviaIsMyCat · 20/02/2020 18:51

If I was single and lived somewhere with ok weather, I think I’d love it.

Sorry but that is nothing like living in a tiny house.

Yup.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 20/02/2020 18:52

On my own yes. With kids, no.

TatianaLarina · 20/02/2020 18:59

I was sorely tempted to buy a genuine gipsy caravan from 1850 for £3500. Sadly there was no way to get it into the back garden.

Hippopotas · 20/02/2020 19:05

If it was just me, my books and a tiny dog I would.

JosefKeller · 20/02/2020 19:12

Why? People are allowed to have different taste and make different choices. Some people are happy spending most (or all) their life travelling in a caravan, or in a house boat.

There are some beautiful cottages around here, absolutely tiny if you ask me. They cost a fortune and are snatched the minute one goes on the market.

I like space. I don't even have that much stuff (or didn't until I got kids),but I like bigger properties, even if they are pretty much empty.

People are allowed to have preferences without it being a dig against someone else.

Moreisnnogedag · 20/02/2020 19:30

I would love it for DH and me in the future - not with kids. But I love tiny cottages too - sadly DH is too tall whereas I am a shorty so would be fine.

My absolute dream is to buy some woodland and have a little log cabin there. It’s not about emulating some idea of the contented poor but discarding the non-essential.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/02/2020 19:32

Yes, I hate big houses. I love small cosy spaces. It's just me and DS so as long as it had 2 bedrooms I'd love it.

ffswhatnext · 20/02/2020 19:53

Tony houses are a lot different to a caravan. They are a lot more spacious as well

It’s not the same one. Just an example of what they can look like inside and out.

On the Tiny house program you see them fitted out to include storage for hobbies, including crafting and musical. Work space. Families, Pets the lot.

There was one episode where they were living temporarily in a static caravan and still managed to cook for a number of people. It was amazing.

Solar panelling for heating and electric. Can get them set up as smart homes. And depending how they are built can also be moved.

They are fantastic spaces to house people where space is very limited. Some are even made out of shipping containers.

It’s the ultimate recycling place f you think about. They’re not usually fully custom made.

I feel as if I already do most days

Shockers · 20/02/2020 19:57

Yes. I love living in my caravan (tourer) during the summer. No room for anything superfluous- one in, one out rule for belongings. I’d need outdoor space though.

speakout · 20/02/2020 20:00

JosefKeller

Because most people living in tiny spaces have no choice.
