Am curious

I'm 53, I'd say I'm middle aged.

Am I wrong?

I think there is elderly - level 1 and elderly - level 2 these days as people are living longer. Seventy year olds don't consider themselves a similar age to ninety year olds.

QuixoticQuokka · 18/02/2020 21:09

45 to 65. I see it as the time between being an adult of childbearing years (for women anyway) and old age, rather than half life expectancy.

You're a child until 16
A young adult until 25
An adult until 45 ish
Middle aged from about 45 to 55
Mature from 55 to about 60
Old from 60-75ish (my grandparents mainly died in this age bracket, no one thought they were middle-aged)
Elderly from 75 onwards

Weekday28 · 18/02/2020 21:11

I would say 45. Although for reference I'm 28 so that may sway my thinking? As I'm aware 10 years ago i would hav thought 28 was old haha!

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 18/02/2020 21:13

Im 40. I so wish for me it meant financial security, good holidays etc as per pp list!!!

We are so far from that 😥

I guess its an age that for us we realise that some of those things may not ever happen for us and coming to terms witb it, rather than bekng a fresh graduate with it all ahead.

Reginabambina · 18/02/2020 21:14

I’d say 40-70

GiantKitten · 18/02/2020 21:16

LaurieFairyCake
68 plus is elderly

Bloody isn't!

(69 next month Hmm)

Elderly is when you can't change your own lightbulbs or drive a few hundred miles Grin

Fairenuff · 18/02/2020 21:17

Life expectancy for a female in the UK today is 81 so middle of that would be 40 years and 6 months.

ssd · 18/02/2020 21:17

I'm not close to that list, still earning minwage, still counting the pennies, still worrying about what people think of me.

Middle age hadn't brought me these wonderful confidence benefits yet. If anything I'm more anxious than ever. Too long at home with the kids and working crap paid jobs around them.
We're all different.

I said 40, not because I see it as mid-way through life, but because it's not young and it's not old - so middle-aged.

BecauseReasons · 18/02/2020 21:20

That's not elderly, that's decrepit. And there's no age for that- some reach it at 80, some at 100, some never reach it and are spry until they die at 110.

RogueV · 18/02/2020 21:20

Around 50-60

chuck7 · 18/02/2020 21:21

If we're talking numbers I'd say 45+ having said that there are people I know 45+ that I wouldn't consider middle aged... I think a large part is down to mindset

IcedPurple · 18/02/2020 21:21

Yeah, I never get this notion that once you reach a certain age you suddenly stop giving a shit about what people think. Surely if you're the type of person who worries about others' opinions you're not going to change just because you're now 40 or 50 or whatever? Some people don't care about what people think at any age, others do. While priorities may change over time, you don't get a personality transplant once you hit a certain age.

overnightangel · 18/02/2020 21:21

50-65

BecauseReasons · 18/02/2020 21:22

To amend my last post, infirm is a far better word than decrepit

DrWAnker · 18/02/2020 21:23

I think middle-aged sounds so old!
I'm 43 this year and I don't feel middle-aged. I'm in my prime!!!!
So I'd say 50-60 although I know it doesn't make logical sense.
60-75 old.
75+ elderly.
But my kids think I'm ancient and so do my students 🤣🤣🤣

PrincessHoneysuckle · 18/02/2020 21:24

@IcedPurple I'm 40 and I'll take that

74NewStreet · 18/02/2020 21:24

50

SecretNutellaFix · 18/02/2020 21:25

I'd say middle aged is 40-60 ish.

HeronLanyon · 18/02/2020 21:26

45-64 Middle aged
65 - 72 older
73-83 bit older still
84 oldish
???

AgeLikeWine · 18/02/2020 21:27

It depends entirely on the person. Some 30 year olds are very middle aged and mumsy / dadsy. They seem to have forgotten what it was like to be young, if they ever knew in the first place.

Some 50 year olds are still very much free and single, out on the piss and out on the pull, travelling around with no ties.

HeronLanyon · 18/02/2020 21:27

Oops meant 84 and upwards - oldish

Mintjulia · 18/02/2020 21:27

I’m 56 and consider myself just middle aged.

I have an 11yo, a full time job, and a part renovated house. I won’t have time to worry about it for at least another decade Grin

40 isn’t middle aged.
