Am curious

I'm 53, I'd say I'm middle aged.

Am I wrong?

Or you count young as under 35, middle as 35-70, old as 70-105 which I think fits better with how people see themselves.

Boooo no way! I'm 32 and I don't want to believe that I'd be considered middle aged in 3 years. I'm not ready for it!

74NewStreet · 18/02/2020 21:29

84+ is considered oldish. Grin

IcedPurple · 18/02/2020 21:30

To those saying that 40 or even 45 doesn't count as 'middle aged' would you seriously describe a 45 year old as 'young'? I know age is relative - 40 seems relatively young to me as a 50 year old - but objectively, it's hard to see how a 40 year old could be considered anything other than middle aged.

I think the problem is that 'middle aged' has negative connotations. Until recently, women, in particular, were expected to become 'old' once they hit 40 (or even younger) and start dressing frumpily and generally behaving in a stereotypical 'middle aged' manner. Happily that isn't the case anymore. But even with longer life spans, that really doesn't change the fact that someone in their 40s is definitely middle aged. Put it this way - they're not young.

Our neighbours are only a few years older than us. DH and I are most definitely middle-aged. NDNs have been elderly for about a decade already. It's a state of mind in their case.

StealthPolarBear · 18/02/2020 21:33

ssd as a 40 year old I love you :)

Frogsborn · 18/02/2020 21:34

I always thought 40-50 was middle aged, since life expectancy tends to be about 85.

Mum2jenny · 18/02/2020 21:35

Middle age 55-75

Littlewelshridinghood · 18/02/2020 21:35

I'd say it's around 40+

BecauseReasons · 18/02/2020 21:37

DH thinks middle aged is 40- 60 and you're old when you're at pensionable age.

Chickoletta · 18/02/2020 21:40

Shocked by comments here - I’m 40 and don’t feel remotely middle aged! Let’s say 45...

Dowser · 18/02/2020 21:40

60

ShinyGiratina · 18/02/2020 21:44

I'm nearly 40 and have no intention of being middle aged for a good while. I was refused service for alcohol 2 years ago because I couldn't prove that I was at least 12 years younger enough to be 25, and have fortunately been able to prove my age (with much raising of eyebrows) a few times since. I still wear my student clothes from 20 years ago without looking ridiculous. I ride a scooter for local journeys. I still feel pretty youthful and my friends in their early 20s forget that I was pushing towards adulthood when they were born.

DH is approaching 50 and getting closer to middle age.

Relatives have only really become "old" around 80+. DF died in his early 50s and while it was a health issue, his lifestyle hadn't been compromised building up to it.

Attitude is a lot to do with it. I knew someone who was definitely middle aged in her mid-20s and some middle aged in their 30s who haven't changed into their 50s.

PigletJohn · 18/02/2020 21:46

If you expect to live to 88, middle is 44.

RuthW · 18/02/2020 21:49

Always 10 years older than I am at present. I'm 51 and certainly haven't reached it yet.

orangeblosssom · 18/02/2020 21:51

40 is middle aged.
60+ elderly-ish
70+ elderly

Itwasntme1 · 18/02/2020 21:51

Middle aged isn’t a reflection of your behaviour or health or lifestyle. Is simply your age.

Just like millennial isn’t an insult, it’s an age.

I love that people refuse to be middle aged😊.

MedSchoolRat · 18/02/2020 21:51

Categs overlap
Youth 18-25
Young 18-35
early middle age 35-50
later middle age 46-65
senior/older 50+
elderly 70+

Yeah, I said something similar above.

Peole don't like to think of themselves as 'middle aged' because they consider it equals being 'over the hill'. But it is a fact that someone in their 40s is middle aged, whether they see themselves as such or not.

wheresmymojo · 18/02/2020 21:54

40 Shock

We haven't even had children yet!

BackforGood · 18/02/2020 21:55

20 years ago I'd have said 'middle aged is the age your parents are'

Mathematically, not many of us will live beyond 90 (many of us won't live to that age), so 1/2 way to that is 45, which suggests middle age outgh to be 40 - 50.

If you think that it is the 'middle of your adult life, then that puts it as between 50 and 60, which does seem to fit in more with out lifestyles these days.

That said, I think it is an attitude thing much more than a fixed age thing.

Soontobe60 · 18/02/2020 21:58

The women in my family have generally lived to their 90s and beyond so I'd say middle age is 40 -65! I'll probably change my mind when I'm 65 though 🤣

BecauseReasons · 18/02/2020 22:01

40? We haven't even had children yet!

You may want to get moving with that then. If you haven't already.

Jarvisisgod · 18/02/2020 22:04

60 isn’t middle aged unless we live to 120, which we don’t. I’d say 40-50 because of life expectancy. It’s laughable some posters saying 70 is middle aged

Itwasntme1 · 18/02/2020 22:05

@ShinyGiratina when I read your post I immediately thought of Eddie in absolutely fabulous 😂😂😂😂

marashino · 18/02/2020 22:08

Do you feel middle aged? I'm in my 50s and I don't feel middle aged at all.
