Alone in foreign country and feeling really low

Sorry for the call for help... but I’m by myself in a foreign country 6 hours ahead, my partner in UK is asleep and I’m struggling quite a lot with low mood/anxiety. No doubt because I’m all by myself and I’m panicking about things. I just want to be at home.

Are you somewhere safe?

Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:21

Sorry didn’t mean to send so soon... I’ll have to eat by myself (although not that hungry). It gets dark in about 40 mins. There isn’t much locally to do or wander around. Could sit up in the hotel restaurant with a book I guess. I am just absolutely bricking it. Got to get through tonight and tomorrow night.

Are you away for long? When do you get home? If you have a phone or tablet or something can you find a lighthearted podcast to distract your thought?

Chocolatecake12 · 08/02/2020 23:22

Why are you there? Work?
So six hours ahead must be 5am - soon be time to start the new day and the loneliness will ease as more people will be up.
What are your plans for the morning?

WantToBeMum · 08/02/2020 23:23

If you're in a hotel and don't want to eat in a restaurant alone get room service and eat in front of a TV if you have one.

Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:24

Yes safe as in it’s in a safe enough area (ish, I wouldn’t really wander round by myself late) and the hotel is fine and secure. But I don’t feel safe because I’m terrified of everything. Mainly of my own mind and I also have a massive phobia about bed bugs and terrified they’re in the bed and I don’t know about it, and so scared about lying in bed all night panicking

Sorry I’m an idiot - I meant UK is 6 hours ahead. 5:25pm here.

So two nights to get through. You can do it op. Does your hotel have seats in any lounge are where you could read / have a coffee etc ? A bar etc ? Do you have a tablet or games on your phones to help take your mind off your anxiety. Something like a word game can really help pass time.
Support. We’re here!

Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:26

I’ll be going home on Monday morning - long bus journey, then two flights - the second of which is currently cancelled so waiting to see what will happen with that....

The irony is I CHOSE to be by myself for these two days, I thought it would be good for me.....HAH! I feel so stupid!

Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:27

@ Chocolatecake12 daytimes are better as I’m basically sat by a pool in a hot country...sounds like I’m living the dream, I know. Just feel shit.

OP posts:
Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:28

@ HeronLanyon it has a restaurant/bar so I can either eat there and sit and read or walk 5 mins away to some restaurants. Though not sure if that would be worse.

Are there cushions you could put in bathroom and sleep there to feel a bit less anxious. I’ve done this before - I slept in the bath once - can’t actually remember why - think in India and didn’t fancy the bed at all.

If my partner was feeling like this I’d want to be woken at any time of night. If you’re really struggling can you call you dp for quick contact ?

Loveinapictureframe · 08/02/2020 23:29

There will always be someone about on these threads. Just try to relax - read, play games, have a hot bath , take care- you will get through it x

Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:29

And I have limited internet - just realised I can’t watch iPlayer from abroad so that plan failed!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/02/2020 23:30

What did you plan to do with your time while you were there?

Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:31

@ HeronLanyon I have also done this in India! There’s only a shower, no bath. It is mainly the terror of bed bugs that I’m afraid of. Though it would still feel tough anyway.

Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:32

@JiltedJohnsJulie just chill by the pool really, which passes the time fine, but I hadn’t really thought through the long evening completely by myself. Tonight and tomorrow.

Oh how funny and there I was thinking I was so clever and yooonique when I did it !! Grin

Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:33

Thank you all very much for your kind words, it’s so nice to think people care

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/02/2020 23:33

Could you read a book, stuff yourself silly in the restaurant and have a early night?

What have you got planned for tomorrow?

Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:34

I also slept across two hard chairs with a skirt draped over me as a blanket! Long night..

WantToBeMum · 08/02/2020 23:34

I don't know about you but I always feel more anxious about everything towards the end of the day as I get tired. Especially tiredness from travel. You're probably jet lagged too? You know that saying, things will be better in the morning?
Find some food in the hotel, take a shower, do some breathing exercises to calm your thoughts. I'm sure there are no bed bugs! Have an early night Try to get a good nights sleep. Tomorrow is a new day, you'll have fun!
If you thought this trip would be fun before, try to remember the things you were looking to.

Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:34

Need to download some easy books onto kindle if I can get the WiFi on kindle working... any suggestions?

OP posts:
Nifflernancy · 08/02/2020 23:36

I’m not sure whether to thoroughly search the bed for bed bugs or if that would make things worse. Or what if I found something... I don’t think they have any spare rooms

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/02/2020 23:37

Last time I got to lie by a pool I read "Why Mummy Drinks".

If you haven't read Eleanor Oliphant, that's lighthearted and popular.
