Would you work if you didn't have to?

If you won the lottery or came into a life changing sum of money some other way.

I like my job fine but they wouldn't see me for dust if I won the lottery. And I would spend my days fostering kittens in my mansion.

Not a bloody chance. At least not initially. If I become bored, I'll work something out. But I find the idea that I would get bored laughable.

inwood · 07/02/2020 10:51

I would become a consultant so I could dabble when i felt like it on really interesting projects.

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/02/2020 10:51

No chance. I’m on maternity leave at the moment and having the best time of my life. I have to go back in a few months but if I didn’t I wouldn’t.

Happydaysareheretostaywayhay · 07/02/2020 10:52

No way!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/02/2020 10:52

If I won the lottery or came into money myself, no way.

If it meant relying on a wealthy partner then yes I would.

SallyWD · 07/02/2020 10:56

I don't have to work and I do. I like the social aspect of it, earning a bit of extra money, using my brain etc. This comes after 7 years as a SAHM.

slipperywhensparticus · 07/02/2020 10:57

Hell no! You wouldn't see me for dust

PurpleDaisies · 07/02/2020 10:58

Yes but less, and not doing what I do now!

slipperywhensparticus · 07/02/2020 10:58

I've got three cats but if I was rich I would totally get more....and a cleaner

Redcrayons · 07/02/2020 10:58

Id pack my current job in without a backward glance. Id have to do something though.

incognitomum · 07/02/2020 10:59

I've always fancied the idea of having a double decker bus decked out with beds ect. Soup/food and drinks. Maybe even a shower. And go around my area picking up homeless people who wanted to get a wash, eat and rest. I'd need staff so would need a good bit of money and probably a sponsor.

I know in reality it'd be more complicated than this as there would no doubt be many difficulties. But it's a dream of mine.

At the moment I work as support for people with learning disabilities. I do enjoy it so maybe I'd still work bank there?

A few years ago I'd definitely have said I wouldn't work.

JorisBonson · 07/02/2020 10:59

@slipperywhensparticus I'll need help fostering all the millions of kitten I intend to look after

I don't have to, but I do. I went back to work after being a SAHM for years because I wanted to be useful and active.

It would be a different matter if I win on the Euromillions on Friday though. I'd happily stagnate in luxurious surroundings.

Likefootball · 07/02/2020 11:03

Not working only becomes a problem if you are short of money.
e.g. Enforced retirement with a low income.
If ,say, you won the lottery why would you work ?
You could always volunteer if you got bored.

Spanneroo · 07/02/2020 11:07

I wouldn't, but I would definitely keep busy with voluntary work or little projects of my own.

Kinda always wanted to open up a community cafe which hosts whatever the local community wants from it: parent and toddler groups, cooking lessons, craft sessions, flexible work space... might set that up if I found I wanted things to be more a bit more full on. But I'd want to work for myself, for sure.

Newfloorlamp · 07/02/2020 11:07

No way I'd be gone the same day. Would have some creative projects for myself at home, volunteer, travel, study and raise my children but would happily never work in the traditional sense again.

massistar · 07/02/2020 11:07

Hell no!

Caramel78 · 07/02/2020 11:07

Definitely not! If I won a very substantial amount then I would set up some sort of animal sanctuary and work there some times. Otherwise I would be a lady of leisure and enjoy every second of it!

mindutopia · 07/02/2020 11:08

Yes, definitely, though I wouldn’t mind working fewer hours. Normally l leave the before anyone else is awake and I woke after dc go to bed until 10-10:30. I wouldn’t mind having my evenings just to relax.

BlastEndedSkrewt · 07/02/2020 11:08

100% yes - I had a fully paid 3 months off last year & became quite depressed to the point that everything was meaningless

I think that everyone needs a focus in life so may be a charity project or voluntary work but no, I wouldn't stay in my current job.

JellyNo15 · 07/02/2020 11:14

Not a hope in hell. I love my job as a like-minded but it is bloody hard. If I had enough money to take early retirement ( I am 50) I would continue to support my DC by provide childcare for my DGC. I would also continue to help out my elderly parents but I might f finally get time for myself and DH

AllPointsNorth · 07/02/2020 11:15

No, I’d just become a perpetual student with a magnificent garden and a crafting workshop, slurping home-made wine. Interspersed with interesting holidays.

SuperMeerkat · 07/02/2020 11:17

No bloody way. I’d go in, tidy up my desk and empty my drawer. Write a handover email (because i’m a softie) then i’d tell everyone I was leaving with immediate effect. When my line manager told me that I had to give 2 months notice i’d just calmly say ‘i’ve Just won £100 mil plus, get HR to ring me and tell me what I owe In lieu of notice’ 😂😂

Can you tell i’ve fantasised over this!
