Would you work if you didn't have to?

If you won the lottery or came into a life changing sum of money some other way.

I like my job fine but they wouldn't see me for dust if I won the lottery. And I would spend my days fostering kittens in my mansion.

Yes, part time, hours to suit.

I wouldn't if I had a job I thought was pointless, but my job is fulfilling and has a purpose, although it's very averagely paid.

I didn't absolutely have to return to work after being a Sahm, but I'm not housewife material and prefer to work now my children are at school. We'd be on a tighter budget and unable to save if I didn't work but we'd be okay.

If we had more money than we knew what to with I'd still want to work, but 2 days per week or so and no really late finishes.

I do think that once the kids are all at school but at the same time young enough that they are still at school I'd want to work because it gives my life another dimension. Once they're all over 18 ish then maybe I'd jack it in and be a nomad, travelling loads, but you can't do that with children at school anyway.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 07/02/2020 19:03

If no children to set a role model too then yes I’d volunteer for lots of causes.

If children, then I’d still work as wouldn’t want them to see it as optional.

ArbitraryNameChange · 07/02/2020 19:16

God no, I would rescue cats and join the WI.

My resignation would be a photocopy of my arse with kisses next to it

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 07/02/2020 19:24

I came on here to yell...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
That feels better..why would anyone?

Babymamaroon · 07/02/2020 19:25

Absolutely no way on earth...

user1497207191 · 07/02/2020 19:26

Yep, I've always done voluntary work, so would continue doing that. Though I'd give up my day job as it''s nowhere near as interesting and enjoyable as the voluntary work.

Lojoh · 07/02/2020 19:33

GOD no. I'd go to school, I'd make my art. I'd do some projects but just interesting ones, on my own schedule.

mynameisntlouise · 07/02/2020 19:57

Absolutely not. I couldn't sit round the house all week but I'd certainly find better ways to spend my time than at work!

I'd still send my son to nursery 3 days a week and spend two off with him, but I'd maybe take a day for myself to just be home and volunteer the other days. Same as OP, something with cats. I'm fine sweeping the pens and changing litter trays. I'd not let it go to my head.

PanicAndRun · 07/02/2020 19:58

Nope.Nope. And more nope.

And I also dream of fostering cats or just opening a cat rescue myself.

I'd probably still do some volunteering at a school though ,because I love the kids and being able to help them without the time constraints would be awesome.

weegiemum · 07/02/2020 20:00

I don't work as I'm disabled and can't commit on what I can do week to week. I'd do more if I was able to find someone to jobshare.

Dh is a GP and he'd quit tomorrow given half a chance and go back to studying (theology) and probably become a pastor.

Badtasteflump · 07/02/2020 20:03

I love my job. But if I was really, stonking rich (like lottery rich) I would probably only work two of three days a week. Can't imagine giving it up completely.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 08/02/2020 08:56

Definitely not. Maybe pockets of volunteering etc. But that's all....

Brown76 · 08/02/2020 10:43

Yes. I'm freelance and love the area of work I'm in, but I'd probably do less and pick riskier projects as I don't need the guaranteed income. Lots of 60+ people in my industry still keep on some projects even if they don't need the money.

FrenchFancie · 08/02/2020 11:05

Yes I would still work. I’ve been a sahm now for nearly 8 years, I don’t have to work as DH earns enough for us to be comfortable but it’s doing my head in - there’s only so much coffee I can drink and yoga classes I can go to!
I’m applying for jobs and have my first interview for 10 years on Wednesday, fingers crossed I get it!! It’s really not about the money but about me being able to do something with my time!!

TheThingWithFeathers · 08/02/2020 11:10

Nope! I would study and travel if I was really rich, and just sit about drinking tea and eating biscuits if I wasn't! It's my dream not to have to work.

vinoandbrie · 08/02/2020 11:12

God no.

Yogawoogie · 08/02/2020 11:15

I would continue working although maybe part time. I love my job and it keeps me sane.

AuntieMarys · 08/02/2020 11:17

No.
Retired at 58. It's great.

TWD89 · 08/02/2020 11:18

I don’t have to work.

So I left my (unsatisfying, well paid but boring) career and set up a business doing what I love instead.

Love every minute of it now and I couldn’t not work.

BahMooQuack · 08/02/2020 11:53

My BF is some decades younger than he rhusband and he is exceptionally wealthy.

She still works. There are alot of reasons I have gleaned over the years.

despite her being with her DH for 20 years she is still regarded as a gold digger. Also, as she says she is pretty conscious that she married him straight out of uni and so every asset they have is essentially because of him.

She's in her late 40s now and is in a high stress professional job as a criminal solicitor. her DH retired years ago yet she is still considered a gold digging triophy wife. We were at a BBQ in the summer and her next door neighbour made a snarky comment about her job being just a 'hobby' job and her husband keeping her. She was so upset but brushed it off. I have never forgotten it and wish i had eviscerated him. She works her arse off.

Rosehip345 · 08/02/2020 11:56

I work part time in a job I love but don’t need to.
I need to feel useful and I still want to be a decent role model to my children.

Nursing83 · 08/02/2020 17:04

No I wouldn't. I might volunteer but in reality I think I'd just stay home

Longdistance · 08/02/2020 17:06

Certainly not. I know lots of people like this in my line of work. I’m rather envious, but do wonder how they fill their days 🤔

PlomBear · 08/02/2020 17:09

No, when I win the lottery I won’t bother going back.

Gammeldragz · 08/02/2020 17:13

Yes, because I love my job and I want my kids to work when they're older.
