Would you work if you didn't have to?

If you won the lottery or came into a life changing sum of money some other way.

I like my job fine but they wouldn't see me for dust if I won the lottery. And I would spend my days fostering kittens in my mansion.

SuperMeerkat · 07/02/2020 11:17

Obviously I would have doubled checked my account balance before going to work 😂😂💵💵💴💴

dunnyplop · 07/02/2020 11:21

Yes I would even if I won 100 million. I would take a yr off to travel & then set up my own business or charity.

amusedbush · 07/02/2020 11:22

Absolutely not. If I won the euromillions you wouldn't see me for dust.

I'd have a flat in zone one London, another in Paris and another in the lower east side of Manhattan. I'd just rotate between the three all year Grin

sunshineskymoon · 07/02/2020 11:22

No way! I'd love to spend as much time as possible with my DS! And any other children I may have.
Can you tell I'm currently on maternity leave and am not ready to go back to work?

dunnyplop · 07/02/2020 11:23

Similarly to others I had 14 months of mat leave with both dc & I'm was desperate to get back to work. Im tto & even find the Summer a bit of a struggle.

Drinkciderfromalemon · 07/02/2020 11:24

Definitely. Maternity leave was awful and I could not imagine more of the same, endlessly stretching out with fuck all to do.

Neolara · 07/02/2020 11:25

I'm back at work after 14 years as a sahm. I'm really enjoying it.

Aozora13 · 07/02/2020 11:26

Like a pp I would probably do what I do but pick and choose a few really interesting projects every year and do them pro bono (I work in international development and love what I do, just wish I didn’t have to spend so much of my time doing it!)

SomeLikeItTepid · 07/02/2020 11:28

I would retrain in a completely different area of work and only take on jobs that really interested me.

MarshaBradyo · 07/02/2020 11:29

I’d do more of what I enjoy (self employed).

PlanDeRaccordement · 07/02/2020 11:32

No chance.
I’d start keeping bees and having a massive garden and orchard.

JacquesHammer · 07/02/2020 11:32

God no.

I don't work full time and I can take it or leave it despite enjoying what I do. Grin

DroppedBoxxedRuth · 07/02/2020 11:32

I work even though I don't need to but I was very nearly about to jack it in because I only want 4 days and apparently, my role can only be done full time Hmm

I've recently agreed a 4 day week so I'll stay for now but I think they'll try to bump it back to 5 when they make the role perm.

LifeBeginsNow · 07/02/2020 11:36

I'd get my health sorted so I could function normally again.

Go on lots of holidays as we all really need & deserve it.

Give my tenants notice we want to move back and both give up work and spend our time doing up the house.

When that's finished, I quite like the idea of doing a low stress, admin job. Or maybe even setting something up myself (which then adds to stress levels) as I really enjoy organising things. Part time obviously.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 07/02/2020 11:38

Of course! I have a brain, I have skills, I have qualifications. I'm not going to let them rot like an idiot.

The money would mean I could choose where to work though.
I could give my time voluntarily to a good cause, rather than needing a salary. I would also look at other non-paid positions on boards and similar.

But no way would I stagnate at home. That sounds dull and depressing.

Samhradh · 07/02/2020 11:39

Yes, absolutely I would. But my work is meaningful and enjoyable -- I entirely understand why someone doing something undervalued and manual would quit without a second thought.

MynameisJune · 07/02/2020 11:43

Not a chance in hell would I work for someone else if I won the euromillions or even normal lottery.

I’d have a fabulous house with gardens, properties in other countries. We’d go skiing, hiking, own horses, swim, have parties, I’d sew and read, work in the garden, go bike riding, trek the Inca trail, see the world and live off grid in Alaska for a while just for the fun of it, do the trans Siberian express as well. Maybe after a couple of years I’d start a charity or animal shelter (or both) but I’d only work in them as and when I felt like.

Why the fuck would you tie yourself to a mon-fri 9-5 when the world is your literal oyster.

MynameisJune · 07/02/2020 11:44

Oh and I only work 3 days a week already in a non manual job. Still wouldn’t go back.

Ginkypig · 07/02/2020 11:44

I think a really high percentage of people wouldn't necessarily want to never work again (probably after a long break though) but they definitely wouldn't want to still continue in the job they are currently in.

Most people work in jobs that they have to and not in their dream jobs that they imagined they wanted to do.

evilharpy · 07/02/2020 11:45

God no. I'd resign immediately.

I wouldn't be idle though. I'd do an OU maths or maths & physics degree and there are some charities I would really like to get involved with including a Down's Syndrome one. If I won the Euromillions and had all that money to play with I'd like to open a little community bakery somewhere lovely as a hobby business without the pressure of it actually having to make money, maybe using it to provide work experience opportunities for people with Down's.

evilharpy · 07/02/2020 11:47

And I'd have a lovely main house with a pool and gym, fancy apartments in a couple of other countries that I love, I'd do lots of travelling and generally having a good old time of it with all my millions.

thenightsky · 07/02/2020 11:47

I've retired and my pension is good enough to live on. But I have signed up to do temporary admin work at my old NHS Trust. I get offered a few weeks work every 4 months or so. I only pick the jobs where I know I will be happy.

SueEllenMishke · 07/02/2020 11:48

Yes. Maybe not full time but my job is so much a part of my identity i'd hate to have to give it up.

bloodywhitecat · 07/02/2020 11:49

Yes, I foster. I foster babies who are drug withdrawing or with foetal alcohol syndrome. I also look after babies and children with complex health needs, I love what I do and if we could afford it DP would stop work too so we could take another baby/child.

irregularegular · 07/02/2020 11:51

Yes, definitely. I would probably ask for an unpaid sabbatical to travel before returning to work, but I am pretty sure I would need to go back to something constructive. Unless I could put together some significant, challenging voluntary work instead. It wouldn't have to be paid work, but it would need to be stimulating and valuable.

I don't think too much leisure would be the right way for me to lead a satisfied life.
