I’m 5ft1.5 and everyone calls me tiny

Is it really that short? I know it’s on the shorter end of adult female height but it’s hardly a midget/dwarf size is it?

My partner is 5ft11 and everyone he knows tells him that about me and people I know often comment it too. I don’t think nearly 5ft2 is all that uncommon. Even average height seems to be only 5ft3 / 5ft4 for women in the UK.

I find a lot of women are only about 1-2 inches taller than me so visually look like the same height as me but even they think I’m tiny.

I am fairly skinny too (on thinner side of healthy BMI) but for some people being thin makes them look taller and I have narrow shoulders and a 28 inch rib cage which is probably adding to the small stature to the point I feel self conscious about it.

Well, yea it is pretty short. Seems strange to focus so much on it tho. Does it matter? I’m sure you look lovely.

AnyFucker · 04/02/2020 19:22

Are you TeenyTiny woman who is always yapping about getting mistaken for a teenager ?

LilyJade · 04/02/2020 19:24

No it's quite a normal height really.
I have several colleagues who are shorter than that. My mum is your height & so is one of my best mates.

I'm 5'3.5" & my late nan only came up to my chest; now she was very short. She was a size 14-16 & struggled to find trousers for a 90 year old that were for her height & size, even the M&S short length came up to her chest!

ShiveringCoyote · 04/02/2020 19:25

I'm 4ft 10. I get called short but at 53 I would never be mistaken for a teenager Grin

Geneshish · 04/02/2020 19:26

I'm your height too (although not quite as thin). DH is 6ft2 so I think that accentuates it as I definitely get more comments now I'm with him.

People (well most people!) only comment on desirable features generally, even if it's in a negative way. So 'you're looking a bit too thin', or 'wow you are tiny' is socially acceptable but 'good lord you are fat' or 'wow your nose is huge' is not so much.

Take the compliment and dont give it a second thought.

darktriad · 04/02/2020 19:27

Yeah very annoying people think they can patronise you if you're short. DD is definitely going to be under 5 ft and the comments she gets really piss me off

tinytemper66 · 04/02/2020 19:30

I am not quite 4ft 11 so to me you are tall!😂

Newmetoday · 04/02/2020 19:30

I’m 5ft 3 and feel short compared to everyone else so I’d definitely feel short at that height.

WellHolyGodMiley · 04/02/2020 19:31

I'm this height exactly and I have got a bit of this in the past. Being told I'm so short. I get a bit annoyed as well. I deviate from the average height far LESS than others who consider themselves average. ie, 5'7''. Is not average, it's taller than average.

It's very tedious. Luckily now I"m 49 nobody pays me any attention any more!!

ScarlettBlaize · 04/02/2020 19:32

@AnyFucker Certainly sounds like her. The one whose boyfriend's family used to say things like, "look at that toddler sitting at the table, why, she's like a teeny tiny ickle dolly, it's so funny".

Insaneinthemembury · 04/02/2020 19:33

I'm 5' 1" and a size 6 and I can told I'm tiny all the time. But I thought I was quite small and have embraced it! I often get told 'I didnt realise you were so short/skinny' if I've been sitting down in meetings.
Oh well! My DH is 6 2 so we look hilarious!

LizziesTwin · 04/02/2020 19:34

It is very short nowadays but that isn’t a judgement, it’s a fact. Young women tend to be taller, there will always be outliers. It is very rude of people to comment on height or weight. You are the height you are meant to be, they could mind their own business and keep their mouths shut.

hazeyjane · 04/02/2020 19:34

Meh. I'm 4'11 shortarse. I don't find many people go on about how short I am.

Northernsoullover · 04/02/2020 19:34

I'm 5'10" and I get comments all the time. It seems if you are anything other than the average you are fair game.

BikeRunSki · 04/02/2020 19:38

My mum is the same height as you. Everyone calls her Titch! It is pretty small, it even was in the 1950s when DM was a teenager.

247SylviaPlath · 04/02/2020 19:43

Surely it will depend on perception. I’m 5’ 9” and 6’ 0” in heels so you would look tiny stood next to me but equally I look ‘tiny’ compared to my colleague who is 6’ 7”. You would look small next to my pre-teen, but in any example I’m not sure why height would matter in any sense... people do tend to come in different shapes and sizes... Ignore any comments???

MegaClutterSlut · 04/02/2020 19:43

I'm the same height and I get called a short arse by everyone. My height doesn't bother me until I try reaching something from the top shelf 😂 my 13 year old Dd is taller than me Grin

GreenTulips · 04/02/2020 19:45

It’s that half inch you keep mentioning -

Just say 5’2

LER83 · 04/02/2020 19:47

I'm 5ft and to be honest, since being an adult, nobody has really said anything about my height. Get the odd joke from friends but it's never been an issue. Got a lot of comments when I was at school, but strangely these always came from other shortish people, especially boys, the tall people never commented on it. My dh is 5ft 11.

Swimmum1206 · 04/02/2020 19:48

My mum just s 5ft1 and growing up she was called all sorts of things. Apparently her teachers called her half pint! I’m 5ft11 and have all sorts of comments about my height, particularly when I’m with my mum.

TeenPlusTwenties · 04/02/2020 19:52

My DDs are about your height OP, and tbh they do seem quite small to me.
They can't reach stuff off shelves.
Clothes always need taking up, even those of 'petite' length.

Basilandparsleyandmint · 04/02/2020 19:53

I am smaller than you it’s no big deal - People can be patronising and do comment on it but it’s not that big a deal really. Not sure dwarf / midget comments are that appropriate though!

SinkGirl · 04/02/2020 19:53

I’m 5’2”, I rarely feel short and it’s never mentioned.

Only felt short when I briefly dated a guy who was 6’5”. I felt bloody ridiculous and that was the end of that.

maddy68 · 04/02/2020 19:53

I'm the same height. It's really annoying having my height pointed out all the time, do they think I haven't noticed ?

damnthatanxiety · 04/02/2020 19:57

Average height for a woman in the UK is almost 5'5" so yes, at 5'1.5" your are short. And visually you don't look the same as someone who is 2 inches taller than you. You look 5'1.5" and they look 5'3.5".

But who cares? You are short, well shorter than average but that's ok. Others are shorter, others are gargantuanly tall. It really is a non issue.
