Coffee shops on a Sunday morning and children

This will kick off no doubt but hey. Slightly tongue in cheek.

Coffee shops on a Sunday morning should be a haven for adults who seek to get away in piece and quiet from every day life for an hour. That means getting away from your own children , DH etc Grin

So been here 5 mins , had to queue behind a mother with her toddler using the display of pastries like choosing sweets in a sweet shop ! Just pick up a croissant get your latte soya single shot and move along !

Then we have the child , mother and grandmother. The GM doing the exaggerated parenting in this case with the GC much to the horror of her own DD. Thankfully they've gone.

Piece and quiet now reins ....

Yanbu. You can't expect a public place to be child free.

Antihop · 02/02/2020 11:14

I meant yabu of course Blush

Needmorecaffine · 02/02/2020 11:14

Cheers @Bloodybridget

Pre dd I would agree. But now I'm one of those annoying people hitting your chair with my pushchair because I still haven't mastered the manoeuvring of said pushchair Grin so yabu

LisaSimpsonsbff · 02/02/2020 11:22

We go for coffee/milk and a croissant with DS (18 months) every Sunday after church. We try not to make a nuisance of ourselves but I think we're legitimate and acceptable customers!

jaffaeclipse · 02/02/2020 11:22

YABU and very selfish, their money is just as good as yours if not better because they will be spending more money there than you will.
Why don't you like spending the time with your children? I'm sure they would like to go to a coffee shop for a treat.

CallMeOnMyCell · 02/02/2020 11:23

What a lovely goady thread for Sunday morning. Why do you care so much?

Needmorecaffine · 02/02/2020 11:24

My children are older teenagers so in another stage of life where I want to ' adult' again without other people's children around. I have regressed to what I was pre children .

Needmorecaffine · 02/02/2020 11:26

It's not goady. Just saying how I feel. I am also a legitimate customer.
A number of people don't like dogs in cafes , I don't like loud children and indulging parents.

An occasional costa with my boys is my sanity. I'm often on my own all weekend with them and it's sometimes my saving grace for a Sunday

okiedokieme · 02/02/2020 11:29

I think it would be better if we could have a range of options, family friendly or adults only. I go to a pub which is no kids (but dogs welcome) suits me (they open for coffee and croissants)

joystir59 · 02/02/2020 11:30

Just been to a fab cafe on the harbour which is normally full of fishermen, so quite a machine vibe, but on Sunday there are families with young kids which lightened the atmosphere. I surprised myself by liking it.

joystir59 · 02/02/2020 11:30

Macho not machine!!!

joystir59 · 02/02/2020 11:32

I prefer dogs to children. Our dog hates young children. I wouldn't go that far, and certainly don't let him have his way with them, but I do think dogs in cafes are a quieter more peaceful event.

Needmorecaffine · 02/02/2020 11:33

@jaffaeclipse as mentioned in a previous post my children are older teenagers so either working at weekend , playing sport or studying.

I think there are families and then THOSE families, who aren't terribly mindful of others. I had the second variety yesterday where the child was being allowed to run around the crowded shop with a scooter (smashed into my leg a couple of times) and mum was happily keeping the very long queue waiting while she performance parented in French...

Needmorecaffine · 02/02/2020 11:35

@joystir59 agree. I have a dog too and she is seen and not heard in a coffee shop. Usually she is with me but as I had to do shopping and shops are not dog friendly she's with DH watching DS play rugby !

We're lucky enough to have family-friendly, dog-friendly and no-dog-no-kids quiet places nearby. Something for everyone!

Needmorecaffine · 02/02/2020 11:39

No kids place ! Heaven. Where ?

Why Sunday morning, not a time on any other day of the week?

bigchris · 02/02/2020 11:44

I know all the pubs in town that kids don't frequent for this reason

Needmorecaffine · 02/02/2020 11:45

I notice it on a Sunday as I am
In work during week but totally agree it could be any day.

I dream of a Sunday morning coffee shop haven like the one you describe in your OP. The ones near me are always full of families too. I don't even mind children, it's the parents, big gatherings of 'middle class' families, parents, kids, grandparents.. and the over the top performance parenting and "come on guys, let's take a photo". All at full volume.

Then we have the pack of runners, all sweaty and glowing from their morning run, who take over half the coffee shop.
