Not how many portions, just different types.

I’ve had 4 fruits and 15 veg.

Thanks for the responses!

Just to explain, I have had a somewhat heated discussion with a friend who has recently changed her family (2 adults, 4 young kids) to a vegan diet. They are being completely OTT about how healthy they now are but in my opinion their diet is still fairly poor given their poor fruit and veg intake.

I don’t believe that switching chicken nuggets to quorn ones and eating vegan ice cream instead of dairy is going to bring them the health benefits they keep harping on about.

I may have told them they are spectacularly missing the point in regards to the potential health benefits of vegan diet. In return, they think that no one eats as many fruits and veggies as I am proclaiming to eat and that most people only eat spuds, carrots and peas and the occasional banana.

I don’t think that my intake is anything to write home about and from these responses it would seem like I am right.

Yeah being vegan isn’t automatically healthy. You need to have some actual nutrients!
I have been a healthy vegetarian, an unhealthy vegetarian, a healthy vegan and an unhealthy vegan. They are all worlds apart. They can be vegan for whatever reason they want but if they are doing it for health they will make small gains unless they change their style of eating (and will likely get pretty bored!)

WheresMyChocolate · 31/01/2020 12:06

7 different fruits and 12 different veggies. Although the balance may be wrong as I wasn't sure if avocado was fruit or veg. Blush

BasinHaircut · 31/01/2020 12:28

mrbob exactly! Especially for the kids, I think that becoming a healthy vegan requires opening up their diets (and palates) to lots of different types of plant-based foods and meals.

Swapping shitty processed meats with processed soy based products is pointless if you want to improve your health!

  1. Which is pretty usual for me. I just eat basic cheap fruit and vegetables, as long as it includes some green vegetaboes I'm not fussy about the rest.
Redcrayons · 31/01/2020 12:36

Apples, oranges, bananas, blueberries. Carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, celery, spinach, peas. I can’t remember if we had green beans on Monday, but they’re always in the freezer so we might have done.

I have a granola with bits of dried fruits and nuts, so whatever was in that.

I consider myself quite ‘good’ in the fruit and veg, I always make sure me and the DCs have our 5 a day.

I can’t get my head round people who don’t like any vegetables or any fruit. It’s all so different.
