BarbaraofSeville · 31/01/2020 14:51

In return, they think that no one eats as many fruits and veggies as I am proclaiming to eat and that most people only eat spuds, carrots and peas and the occasional banana

Mumsnetters are not 'most people' and their assertion that most people don't get their five a day are correct.

www.gov.uk/government/news/phe-publishes-latest-data-on-nations-diet

only 31% of adults, 32% of 65- to 74-year-olds and 8% of teenagers meet the 5 A Day recommendation for fruit and vegetables

But I agree that a vegan diet does not equate a healthy one as it could consist entirely of stuff like vegan beige, chips, crisps, crappy white bread with spread and jam on and some baked beans and canned peas if you're lucky.

Rhubarbncustard4 · 31/01/2020 15:02

10 vegetables 2 fruit
Kids 8/9 veg 3/4 fruit
I’m vegetarian as is one child

The vegan processed ‘revolution’ concerns me ... vegan nutrition is pretty hard work

BasinHaircut · 31/01/2020 15:03

barbara yes sorry I probably didn’t quite phrase that correctly. They think that eating more than a token amount of fruit and veg is almost laughable, as if it’s not possible.

If you exist on frozen pies and the like then I suppose a side of peas is going to be about the sum of it on a normal day. But what I was trying to say is that many of the health benefits associated with a vegan diet are to do with the fact that said vegans are eating more plants.

BasinHaircut · 31/01/2020 15:06

rhubarb I agree. Whilst technically ‘plant based’, you cannot tell me that if a diet is predominantly made up of highly processed food, is a particularly healthy one.

Skyejuly · 31/01/2020 15:10

I avoid peppers and citrus so just berries (3 types) and about 4 veg.

shinynewapple2020 · 31/01/2020 15:14

Two different packs of frozen mixed berries - so strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, redcurrant and black berry.
A couple of packs of chopped melon with 3 different types of melon
Banana
Grapes
Butternut squash
Green beans
Tomato
Courgette
Carrots
Swede
Sweet corn
And insane amounts of broccoli!! I.e 3 meals where I've had a whole massive floret bunch

BarbedBloom · 31/01/2020 15:19

Trying to count now. We cook from scratch every night so tend to use a lot in sauces etc too. 14 to 15 I think.

DinosaurDreams · 31/01/2020 15:20

Not massively into fruit, so only grapes, a couple of satsumas and a banana.

Lots of veg, though...

Courgette
Sweet potato

Wine doesn’t count (sigh).

Neither do olives (which surprised me).
