Why are they making another Emma?

I've seen the trailer twice and I'm not keen on the characters at all! I don't get the Emma or Mr Knightly casting.... For me the Gwyneth Paltrow one is just great.

What does everyone else think about the new version?

Again?! I hadn’t heard about this but Emma is becoming like Spider-Man.

doadeer · 28/01/2020 15:57

Look at Mr Knightly!!! 🙊

Why are they making another Emma?

The Gwyneth Paltrow version was nearly 25 years ago. There's always scope for reinventing/ reimagining stories for a new generation.

Personally, I loved the look of the trailer. No idea who the Emma/ Knightley actors are, but Bill Nighy is a good shout for Mr Woodhouse and Miranda Hart is inspired casting for Miss Bates.

Looks fun - I'm sold.

Chemenger · 28/01/2020 16:12

I think Bill Nighy is perfect for Mr Woodhouse. I like Rupert Graves as Mr Weston as well.

Bunnybigears · 28/01/2020 16:14

I have never read or seen Emma and had no desire to do so but having seen the trailer and that it features Miranda I would like to watch it. That's why they make remakes.

PuppyMonkey · 28/01/2020 16:15

Hopefully, they’ll tell it all in flashback and flash forward like the new Little Women movie.Grin

Patroclus · 28/01/2020 16:15

Ban Jane Austin and Charles Dickens adaptions. And their mediocre books.

doadeer · 28/01/2020 16:15

Yes sorry I apologise those two were literally the only ones I said to my sister that seemed like good casting. The other ones are so wrong though can't imagine I'll like it

Im glad we're out of that period in which Keira Knightley was in/ruining every period drama ever though

Cohle · 28/01/2020 16:24

I'm really looking forward to it. I love Austen and the cast look fantastic.

TheCraicDealer · 28/01/2020 16:25

Agree- the more recent Romola Garai TV adaption (c.2008) was also brilliant and I don't feel like we really "need" this? And I'm a big Austen fan. But then I realise even that was 12 years ago so maybe it's not a bad idea.

I do like the sound of some of the cast- Bill Nighy and Miranda should be fab in their respective roles. Not sure where they were going with Knightly (OMG so Mrs Elton there) but I'll have to see it before passing final judgement!

Wineislifex · 28/01/2020 16:26

Oh I didn’t know there was a new remake, just googled and the actress has just been in the latest series of peaky blinders. I like the tv adaption that’s on Netflix the 2009 version with Jonny lee Milner

RuffleCrow · 28/01/2020 16:27

Yawn. It's like Britain has only ever produced three writers. Read some other books, people!

Guacamole · 28/01/2020 16:34

They keep remaking Jane Austen adaptations roughly every 10 years or so. I hated Gwyneth Paltrow’s Emma also Romola Garai’s (sp?) Emma so I’m willing to give another Emma go.
I personally would love to see a remake of Persuasion... although Rupert Penry-Jones’ Captain Wentworth is perfect casting. Sigh.

FramboiseRoyale · 28/01/2020 16:40

I love Rupert, but I beg to differ on the matter of Persuasion. The definitive Captain Wentworth is Ciaran Hinds in the 1995 film.

Equanimitas · 28/01/2020 16:42

I never really liked the Gwynneth Paltrow version so I'm up for another one, but Mr Knightley looks too young in the trailers. Which is a pity, as he's one of my favourite Austen heroes.

Guacamole · 28/01/2020 16:42

On no, no, Ciaran Hinds did nothing for me. :)

StarbucksSmarterSister · 28/01/2020 17:15

Framboise Absolutely That was a superior version in every way. The ITV version was awful.

As for Emma - only Jeremy Northam can be Knightley.

PutYourLipsTogetherAndBlow · 28/01/2020 17:18

Mine and dd’s favourite version is ‘clueless’ with Alicia silverstone but I do like the GP version too.

I love that Clueless is now a classic in its own right though.

doadeer · 28/01/2020 17:19

Jeremy Northam is perfect as Mr Knightly 😍

StarbucksSmarterSister · 28/01/2020 17:19

I just googled the trailer. It looks as if they're trying to suggest it's really funny, where Emma is subtle and witty rather than obvious.

FramboiseRoyale · 28/01/2020 17:19

Starbucks Agree 100% about Jeremy Northam as Knightly. I also liked Alan Cumming as Mr. Elton.

PorpentinaScamander · 28/01/2020 17:20

My teen boys want to see it purely because Miranda is in it. I'm fairly certain that if I suggested watching the older versions they wouldn't be interested. So in that sense I guess it's a way of bringing classic stories to the next generation. Or something.

I don't think I've seen the other versions, if I have I don't remember them. If they were much loved movies of mine then I wouldn't want new versions Grin

Deadringer · 28/01/2020 17:22

There can't be too many Austen adaptations imo, and I like lots of other books too.

doadeer · 28/01/2020 17:24

I think Northhanger Abbey is really underrated - I'd like a film of that
