Why are they making another Emma?

I've seen the trailer twice and I'm not keen on the characters at all! I don't get the Emma or Mr Knightly casting.... For me the Gwyneth Paltrow one is just great.

What does everyone else think about the new version?

I saw Love and Friendship at the cinema i can't remember why - whether it was because Kate Beckinsale was so posh (ha) or whether I'd had a wine or there were loud people but I remember struggling to keep up with the dialogue and vowing to watch it on my TV with subtitles on. I feel like I missed out on dialogue and Austen is so witty you need to hear every line

Framboise, thanks, I couldn’t recall B Hepton’s name. And yes, I’ve seen the ancient Hollywood version of P and P, - mucked about and dreadful, wrong clothes (Hollywood was apparently very prudish about anything revealing of cleavage at the time) and they made Lizzie too ‘sweet’ IMO.
However an elderly neighbour really disliked the BBC version when it came out - much preferred the Laurence Olivier version, probably because she still adored him!

Does anyone else think Emma Thompson was all wrong in Sense and Sensibility? I’ve enjoyed it more than once, but she just didn’t seem right - slightly too old?

PPs have said exactly that

I've finally got around to watching the new Emma. It wasn't perfect but lots of good things about it. Fantastic chemistry between Emma and Mr Knightley, absolutely loved their dance and subsequent scenes between them. I also thought some of the casting was brilliant.

Some negatives though: Emma was too obnoxious whereas I think she is mostly just oblivious; I know there is a character arc but we didn't see enough of her redeeming qualities. Frank Churchill was not good looking enough. Ditto Harriet Smith - she was supposed to be pretty but it just wasn't believable that her looks could ever make up for her low status.

I don't care though, I am still going to rewatch it to live vicariously through the Emma/Knightly scenes Grin

I thought the male casting was a disaster. Knightley looked like a weird, straw-haired yokel, Frank Churchill wasn’t remotely attractive, and you never had the slightest suspicion Emma was at all attracted to him, whereas she and K kept smouldering at one another from the beginning, which more or less removed the motor of the plot. I’d have cast the actor from The Durrells/Prince Charles in The Crown who played Mr Elton as Frank.

On the other hand, I thought Jane Fairfax was exactly right, Miranda Thingie as Miss Bates worked, Harriet Smith was plausibly pretty and dim, and Mrs Elton and her hairdo were great.
