Why are they making another Emma?

I've seen the trailer twice and I'm not keen on the characters at all! I don't get the Emma or Mr Knightly casting.... For me the Gwyneth Paltrow one is just great.

What does everyone else think about the new version?

Shock

Remus

Bury me for I am deaded!

I think I know the entire screenplay word for word!

Patroclus · 28/01/2020 20:31

Having said that there was that Vanity Fair not long ago and it was utter shite. To be fair though I have concentration issues with the 'olden days toffs being witty about marraige' genre

Patroclus · 28/01/2020 20:34

Weirdly Vanity Fair was supposedly Stalin's favourite book.

RustyBear · 28/01/2020 20:38

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit - Mr Knightley was 36 when the book begins, sixteen years older than Emma, who was not quite 21.
We don't know Mr Wodehouse's age, but we are told he 'did not marry early' and Isabella, Emma's older sister, is 7 years older than her, so he would probably be at least mid to late 50s at the start of the book, and quite possibly older.

RustyBear · 28/01/2020 20:42

Also, there is no mention in the book of Mr Knightley being Emma's godfather; I wouldn't have expected a 16 year old to have been chosen for that role at that period.

HearMeSnore · 28/01/2020 22:55

...only Jeremy Northam can be Knightley.

Amen to that. Around that time everyone else was going gaga for Colin F in P&P but it has to be Mr Knightley for me. When he finally let his guard down and laid his heart bare... No wonder Emma could barely speak. I was just a puddle on the floor.

hairygodmother · 29/01/2020 05:15

Yes, and when he (Jeremy) says 'badly done, Emma', after Box Hill, it's just perfect. He really was just right and the right age too at least. But Mr Knightley has always been my favourite so am a bit biased. Although I do love a bit of twinkly-eyed Mr Tilney.

RustyBear · 29/01/2020 09:41

He [Jeremy Northam] really was just right and the right age too at least Actually he was 35 when he did Emma, a year younger than Jonny Flynn is now.

HouseworkAvoider10 · 29/01/2020 09:48

I don't understand how people can say Goop was awful in Emma.
She was great in it.

IpanemaGallina · 29/01/2020 09:55

Ooh I’ve just watched the trailer. I’m definitely in

FramboiseRoyale · 29/01/2020 13:25

Jeremy Northam was perfect as Mr. Knightley.

It would be fun to do a fantasy casting with all the "definitive" performances for each Jane Austen film adaptation for which there have been many versions. For Mr. Collins in P and P, I nominate David Bamber in the 1995 BBC version.

billy1966 · 29/01/2020 13:30

Gweneth was superb in Emma, and I am not a fan.
It was a super version.

billy1966 · 29/01/2020 13:33

Gwyneth!
Disliked intensely Kiera Knightly.

I am adoring Mathew McFadden in Succession, he's just great in it.

Adored Alan Rickman. Just great.

MrsSpenserGregson · 29/01/2020 13:38

I absolutely loved Jonny Lee Miller as Mr Knightley (playing opposite Romola Garai's Emma - thought she was pretty good too tbh). In that version, Tamsin Greig plays Miss Bates to perfection, and Whatsisname who played the Singing Detective / Dumbledore gets it spot on as Emma's father.

Agree that David Bamber's portrayal of Mr Collins in P&P is wonderful. So so oily Grin

I'd actually like to see a remake of P&P. I've loved Colin Firth since I saw him Another Country in the 1980s, and I don't think Mr Darcy is his best role at all.

MaidofKent78 · 29/01/2020 13:41

Yes, and when he (Jeremy) says 'badly done, Emma', after Box Hill, it's just perfect.

Totally. I loved that adaptation of Emma. I thought the casting was great. I though GP played Emma pretty well.

But there can never be a better adaptation of S & S than Emma Thompson/Kate Winslet et al. It is an utter delight of a film.

FramboiseRoyale · 29/01/2020 13:43

Yes, I'll watch anything with Alan Rickman. Over and over.

FramboiseRoyale · 29/01/2020 13:45

I liked GP in Emma. I think she really nailed the delightfully oblivious self-confidence of the character.

PerkingFaintly · 29/01/2020 13:46

Ooh, I was all about to agree that the world didn't need another one, OP. Then I saw the casting.

Suddenly much more keen!

RedRec · 29/01/2020 13:47

Totally off course here but just had to say I was totally in love with Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon in Emma Thomson's Sense and Sensibility!

youngestisapsycho · 29/01/2020 13:52

They remake things... its annoying.
There is a remake coming of Rebecca! A classic, oscar winning movie.
Little Women has just been done again...
They are also doing a remake of Matilda!

see this on IMDB... they're remaking loads great films Sad

FlowerArranger · 29/01/2020 13:54

What we need is a decent remake of Wuthering Heights

FramboiseRoyale · 29/01/2020 14:03

I will enjoy seeing a remake of Rebecca. Kristen Scott Thomas as Mrs. Danvers will be worth the price of admission.

Patroclus · 29/01/2020 14:53

Having said all that... the new charly dickens film looks bangin

PerkingFaintly · 29/01/2020 15:08

Kristen Scott Thomas as Mrs. Danvers will be worth the price of admission.

Shock True dat.
doadeer · 29/01/2020 15:15

I went to see David Copperfield with my baby this week (baby cinema) yes I liked it! It's a strange story isn't it?🤣

Agree re Alan Rickman he was marvellous!
