How often do you air the house in this weather?

I do daily, extra jumper if nec, no matter how nippy outside. Am I the only one?

Not if locked open an inch.

The poster I quoted just said she leaves her windows open. She didn’t mention that they were locked.

Benjispruce · 26/01/2020 10:07

I’m a window opener, DH is too luckily. My DM was so I guess you follow habits that are ingrained. I love fresh air, drying washing outside whenever I can. I live in a quiet area though on a quiet road. Perhaps I’d be less keen if there was traffic outside my window.

Benjispruce · 26/01/2020 10:14

I agree it’s healthy to open windows regularly. I can’t stay at a particular friend’s house because she locks all windows and won’t allow them open at night but also has a very well insulated (hot) house so I just can’t sleep.

Dowser · 26/01/2020 10:41

No
I live In a draughty bungalow
Front door opens and everyone gets fresh air
Plus not much good if you live in a town with fumes from traffic

stripeypillowcase · 26/01/2020 10:43

@Lipperfromchipper
is your system noisy?
we are thinking of getting a unit, but atm an put off by the noise.

MrsPear · 26/01/2020 10:44

Daily - my mum never opened the windows and the house stank. I rebelled as a teenager and realised a small Allen key would open my bedroom window. I annoy her now by throwing open windows in the morning when I visit.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/01/2020 10:50

I bought this house because it has 4 sets of French doors, they get opened a lot,I'm a big believer in airing the place.

Lipperfromchipper · 26/01/2020 10:52

@stripeypillowcase I can vaguely hear it at night sometimes but we put the unit over the kitchen side of the house (it’s a sort of L or v shaped house) because that’s the furthest spot from the bedrooms, it’s important to ensure you have the correct sized unit for the house and also good ducting apparently.

userxx · 26/01/2020 10:54

@MrsPear I'm thinking the people who don't open windows and say their house doesn't smell are nose blind to it.

Ninkanink · 26/01/2020 10:55

We have our heating on and our windows open. It’s not a waste of money at all, IMO, it’s how we ensure we are comfortably warm and comfortably fresh enough to be healthy and sleep well.

stripeypillowcase · 26/01/2020 10:56

thanks lipper
we are in a large square terrace and the unit would need to go very close to neighbours.
will need to do more research.

Biancadelrioisback · 26/01/2020 10:58

My bedroom, DSs bedroom and bathroom are always open but locked on the latch. None of the others get opened.
How can people go out and leave windows wide open? Aren't you worried about being burgled? You can't claim on insurance if you had windows open at the time. Or worried about cats or birds getting in? My grandma has a dead bird on top of her wardrobe for God knows how long. Now that stunk.

I never get MN. It's a land where everyone has their front door locked and bolted at all times for fear of being burgled or murdered, but leave their windows wide open all day.

Ninkanink · 26/01/2020 11:00

(However we only routinely heat our living area, and only during waking hours. Office is only heated when used, bathroom rarely needs it and we never heat our bedroom at all. We both like to sleep in a cool room.)

lilgreen · 26/01/2020 11:09

I don’t think anyone apart from one poster goes out and leaves windows wide open.

lilgreen · 26/01/2020 11:09

I leave the top narrow window open upstairs in bedrooms but locked.

ClarkGriswoldsChristmastree19 · 26/01/2020 11:56

Everyday. My In-laws never open their windows and their house smells. They honestly don’t smell it.

Changeembrace · 26/01/2020 11:57

* I don’t think anyone apart from one poster goes out and leaves windows wide open.*

Not wide open. But slightly open certainly

Biancadelrioisback · 26/01/2020 12:02

lilgreen that's not how I read the first wave of responses tbh. All saying they open their windows in the morning and leave them open all day or until 2/3pm etc. None of them say they lock them on the latch

userxx · 26/01/2020 12:06

@Biancadelrioisback It depends on the windows, the ones I leave open all day are small, unless the burglar was 3ft 2 and very thin then it's fine.

Ninkanink · 26/01/2020 12:10

Just for clarity all our windows are properly open all day long (and night) in the summer. In the winter they are open anywhere between one to three inches, one window in each room. As we are not on the ground floor we can leave them open when we’re out, and we do.

When we lived in a house it was slightly different, obviously. Window in the front facing kitchen was open when I was cooking but otherwise closed. Upstairs windows all open when we were at home (fully open in summer time, about an inch in the wintertime). Downstairs windows always closed when we went out, upstairs windows left on the latch.

lilgreen · 26/01/2020 12:19

I guess they work from home or don’t work.

theneverendinglaundry · 26/01/2020 12:20

I dont have windows open this time of year unless I'm in the shower or am cooking. However, my windows have those little vents at the top and those stay open all year round, so air can always circulate.

Baaaahhhhh · 26/01/2020 12:28

Bedroom and bathroom windows all "open" and locked on the latch all day and all night, even when out. Kitchen window always open on latch, but I do close this if we go out.

Downstairs windows and door open in the summer, but again locked tight if we go out.

The only time all the windows and doors are locked tight are when we go on holiday or away for the weekend.

We happen to have a very well insulated house, however I do wonder if all those articles you read about insulation, and double glazing, and heat retention every take into account that most people like fresh air as well.

nancyjuice7 · 26/01/2020 12:32

Bedrooms are on night lock (so open slightly) 24/7. Unless in summer when they are open properly.

Bathroom is open during day, night lock at night.

Kitchen is open and back door is open when cooking. And whenever the dog wants out so fairly frequently.

Living room is opened once a week when I clean but gets air from the kitchen as we leave all the doors in our house open all of the time

MrsAmaretto · 26/01/2020 12:33

Never at this time of year - it's a force 8 gale and the rain is horizontal!
