How often do you air the house in this weather?

I do daily, extra jumper if nec, no matter how nippy outside. Am I the only one?

@singingstones , biology is real. WinkAir that has been recycled through human beings needs changing.

stoneysongs · 26/01/2020 09:11

@bellinisurge
I can understand that it might be noticeable in some circs, on a busy tube, or with many people living in a single room but have never felt it necessary in any house I have lived in, maybe because they are old and draughty so ventilate themselves.

I really dislike the fustiness and heaviness that comes from central heating so we don't use ours much, maybe that also helps.

Absolute madness imo to have the central heating on all day and the windows open as a PP describes!

Everyday. Its -20 here in winter sometimes, currently -8 outside, still open daily to air. Otherwise regardless of house age if will be full of stale air breathed out all night.

Usually open several after showers in morning, leave open whilst we eat breakfast then close most back up. So open just 20-30 mins in winter, but enough to blow fresh air in and stale out. In spring and summer when warm some stay open 24/7.

MimiLaRue · 26/01/2020 09:13

Every single day, no matter what the weather I open all the windows for a bit. Studies have shown that opening windows in hospital environments cuts infection by staggering percentages.

Fresh air is so important

userxx · 26/01/2020 09:15

@granadagirl That's crazy! What a massive waste of money.

lilgreen · 26/01/2020 09:15

It’s not just staleness but air needs to be replaced to keep safe from chemicals given off from hobs, boilers, soft furnishings, burning candles, log burners etc.

Babyg1995 · 26/01/2020 09:18

Every day when we leave the house all windows are left open untill we are home from work / school no matter the weather . weekends there open for around 2 hours in morning just layer up.

WobblyAllOver · 26/01/2020 09:19

I don't burn candles. What chemicals does my properly ventilated and serviced condensing boiler give off?

We have the correct outside vent fitted to the room with the log burner as per the current building regulations.

Still don't see any reason for opening a window to let the warmth out Grin

Funny though how many of us seem to be the only one on the street who opens their windows.. my street is like that, apart from my neighbours back bedroom window. He must get really hot because his bedroom window is open 24/7 all year round. It's not just the smells and damp/mould, I actually think it's good to have some fresh oxygen. My dad used to smoke and drink in his flat and never open the window because he got cold. It smelled like an old pub! If I ever took the kids there, they'd come back smelling of stale tobacco smoke Hmm. I used to open it to get fresh air in, but he'd moan about the cold after a while.

lilgreen · 26/01/2020 09:21

There are chemicals being given off all the time that can build up if windows are not opened regularly. They don’t have to be open all day, just 10 minutes or so. I thought everyone knew that.

MrsPerfect12 · 26/01/2020 09:21

Everyday. Bathroom windows open all the time. All vents open on all windows for airflow.

lilgreen · 26/01/2020 09:22

Not to mention radon!

Camomila · 26/01/2020 09:25

Every morning even in winter. Helps with condensation as well as making it smell nice.

VanGoghsDog · 26/01/2020 09:28

Never. I work, so I don't have time. I can't leave the windows open when I'm not there and I don't even like leaving the downstairs ones open if I go upstairs.

Emmabryant123 · 26/01/2020 09:31

In our renting contract it states that daily airing is necessary. Do the people who don't air not getting any condensation?

WobblyAllOver · 26/01/2020 09:40

Do the people who don't air not getting any condensation?

No but again my house has good ventilation built into it without letting a gale through by opening the windows.

ElloBrian · 26/01/2020 09:42

Interesting study on the effect of air quality on work performance:

Lipperfromchipper · 26/01/2020 09:44

No I don’t get condensation, mould or bad smells because our MVHR system does all of that, it removes bad smells, old air and any condensation and replaces it with heated fresh air! Job done and no windows need to opened...ta daaaa ✅

Bluedogyellowcat · 26/01/2020 09:48

Never. This is a new one to me

WobblyAllOver · 26/01/2020 09:58

I think if you have a poorly ventilated house with damp of course it makes sense to air it daily.

If the house is well ventilated there is no point in opening a window for 10 mins everyday.

lilgreen · 26/01/2020 10:02

Windows open just now, no gale blowing just birdsong and fresh air.

AlexaAmbidextra · 26/01/2020 10:02

Every day when we leave the house all windows are left open untill we are home from work / school no matter the weather

I hope those of you who do this realise that if you’re burgled your insurance company will reject your claim.

lilgreen · 26/01/2020 10:03

Not if locked open an inch.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 26/01/2020 10:04

Bedroom windows open all night, so there's not much stale air come morning. Lighting the fire helps as well.
