A thread intended for menus, cats and idle chit-chat.

I’m surprised that MN hasn’t pulled that thread. Off to look for a tin of custard and pink colouring😊

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 28/01/2020 20:04

I may not like custard, but I LOVE Angel Delight!

yolofish · 28/01/2020 20:05

sorry people but custard of any colour or flavour is disgusting. Unless it is in trifle, where it is discombobulated by sponge, fruit and cream.

This is the LAW!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 28/01/2020 20:06

When I was at school pink pudding was blancmange 🤮

7Worfs · 28/01/2020 20:30

I just remembered a dessert I loved at nursery. Everyone hated it, so I ended up eating a lot of portions.
I'm feeling trepidatious about sharing it, in case it's universally accepted as awful and I am forever known as the peasant who liked grits (vanilla/chocolate flavoured). Blush

Anyone know a good grits recipe?

Ness1234 · 28/01/2020 20:32

Butterscotch Angel Delight........

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 28/01/2020 20:51

Butterscotch Angel Delight.......

The BEST one!

I have heard that if you mix banana Angel Delight and butterscotch Angel Delight you get Banoffee Angel Delight.

I don't know if I dare...

CleansUpDragonPoo · 28/01/2020 20:52

DragonPoo If you look at a tin of custard powder it states the ingredients.

Ahem Mustress, must confess I've never bought the powder, only the tinned ready made.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 28/01/2020 20:55

Grits? I think of that as Southern food. Never tasted them though. Who fed you grits, 7?

7Worfs · 28/01/2020 21:12

Mischief it was a nursery in the 80s in a southern European country

AmIbeingTreasonable · 28/01/2020 21:18

@GracefulHippo can you link to the "nice thread" please?

JulietJanuary · 28/01/2020 22:06

Apple crumble and custard gets my top marks.

Although if a cake fails to rise properly or doesn't make it out if the tin in one piece we put custard on the top and call it a pudding!

GracefulHippo · 28/01/2020 22:08

I don’t know how to link Blush. It is under talk / other stuff / royal family.

It is a thread for people “Happy for Meghan and Harry”

yolofish · 28/01/2020 22:10

The nice thread is just as nasty as the nasty thread IMO.

The custard talk is just wrong and immoral! Custard is the devil's food! No one can sway me from that pov, even if it is custard-ist.

JulietJanuary · 28/01/2020 22:11

Cinders I didn't see your thread so have missed any detail, apologies.

Its the worst age imo. (I have one who has now made it out the other end.) Hang on in there.

GracefulHippo · 28/01/2020 22:17

Yolo, I completely disagree!!!

You warm up cream, mix in an egg yolk, sugar, cornflour and fresh vanilla from vanilla pods. SO tasty!!! Especially with crumble... apple crumble, rhubarb crumble

< runs to kitchen to look for anything sweet >

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 28/01/2020 22:21

Juliet we eat a LOT of apple crumble chez fleas, on account of having a very bounteous Bramley apple tree in the garden (plus a Cox's, Discovery, Braeburn and Golden Delicious, I got a bit carried away). Every year we have more apples than we know what to do with and give loads away. By Christmas everyone is heartily sick of apple based puddings...

yolofish · 28/01/2020 22:21

gracefulhippo but it tastes icky!!! clotted cream, double cream, now you're talking!

OTH I might have to climb down from my custard high horse because I have just remembered bread & butter pudding along with trifle... but both of those are ingredients rather than that thick gloopy yellow stuff!

CleansUpDragonPoo · 28/01/2020 22:21

Grits? I think of that as Southern food. Never tasted them though. Who fed you grits, 7?

Hominy grits was Southern food I ate when I was in the States. Once was enough. Some sort of savoury mess. Never heard of a pudding called grits but if it uses the same ingredients, no thanks. I love a good pud, especially if it comes with custard (sorry Yolo) and discussing them is next best, so could you explain further about this pudding please 7, and what country was this nursery in?

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 28/01/2020 22:23

I really want to try making home made custard now. I swear all this food talk has resulted in me thinking about food too much!

TheMustressMhor · 28/01/2020 22:30

Well, I've had an evening off and watched Farpaison Chon Chaorach (BBC ALBA). ( *sheepdog trials )

Never entirely sure how they get the dogs to do anything.

But quite relaxing.

Custard seems to be the new marmite. Or possibly marmite was the new custard.

Whatever. They do not taste good together.

(disclaimer - marmite and custard have never been served simultaneously in the Mhor cottage.)

OP posts:
TheMustressMhor · 28/01/2020 22:32

So in fact I am guessing.

Possibly, custard and marmite do taste good together.

A fiver to the first person to try it.

(Umm. I have not thought this through. Anyone can claim they tried it. How will Mustress Mhor know? But nobody would lie on an anonymous internet forum. So trust everyone, Mustress. You know it makes sense.)

CleansUpDragonPoo · 28/01/2020 22:35

Speaking of marmite & custard, I digress to ask opinions on the new marmite & peanutbutter spread. Dragon household is split vehemently for and against, with me being against. I like both separately, whose
mistaken idea was it to combine them!

TheMustressMhor · 28/01/2020 22:53

Dragon that would be the same people who thought it would be a good idea to produce salt and vinegar crisps.

I get second-degree burns just thinking about them.

7Worfs · 28/01/2020 23:08

I think the grits dessert is made by mixing cornmeal possibly with milk and the chosen flavour, then baking to solidify it and cut into pieces - probably has more stuff done but I’m only remembering the delicious bricks that were served.
