Help- cleaner drank my gin!

Hi all,
I’m new to mumsnet, but would really love some advice!

I’ve just signed up to a cleaning company and had my first clean, which I was thrilled about.
Then I noticed that half of my bottle of pink drink has gone!
I only got the bottle given to me as a gift last week from my sister in law.
My Dh doesn’t drink and I have my two ds in the house.
It was the cleaner definitely!
The company have been awful at getting back to me and sent me a poor email saying she said she didn’t drink it Hmm and was too early in the morning.

I feel really gutted and not sure how to move forward or get some sort of justice!!

Get a fingerprinting kit. (I'd want to know if it was my son.)

NameNumber5634521 · 20/01/2020 19:05

Just be thankful whoever drank it didn't top it u with water. Like my brother did at aged 14. My dad was more pissed off his remaining alcohol was ruined than about bro sneaking the spirits.

Bizawit · 20/01/2020 19:07

This thread is interesting, but not sure why I’ve been called loon and laughed at.

Because, honestly it’s so ridiculous and naive (And pretty nuts) that with a 13 year old in the house, you have assumed your cleaner stole your alcohol Confused.

For a cleaner to do such a thing would be highly unusual. As others have pointed out she risks losing her job (over a few quid) and is capable of buying her own booze. Yes it’s possible she’s an alcohol/ destitute/ a thief and alcohol is her booty of choice, but unlikely.

On the other hand, teenagers stealing their parent’s booze is INCREDIBLY common. I did it - decanted my dad’s whisky and took it to school to share with mates. Teenagers like to experiment with alcohol, and their parents supply is a perfect place to source it, given that they are typically unable to buy it themselves. It also gives you cred with your mates to be able to supply. I’m sure that my parents thought I had no interest in alcohol at 13. Little did they know! Wink

To accuse your cleaner is ridiculous, and also quite appalling given you have no proof.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 20/01/2020 19:11

Had you had ANY of it? You probably had more that you realised.

lowlandLucky · 20/01/2020 19:14

O.P i think you will end up having to apologise to your cleaning lady and i think you will have to adjust your ideas about teenagers

NewMe2020 · 20/01/2020 19:14

@kayde12 How bad was the house? Did she need the gin to get through it? If so, YABVU - leave her some Gin Grin

SunshineCake · 20/01/2020 19:17

If it was the cleaner it is more likely she tipped it into her own drinks bottle than drank half a bottle and then cleaned and drove Hmm.

ClappyFlappy · 20/01/2020 19:20

The people saying “she wouldn’t risk her job for this” and “there’s no proof” - maybe she’s thought “I won’t be risking my job as she’d never be able to prove I took it”.

And again, ridiculously naive if you really think people don’t jeopardise their jobs by doing things like this.

Serin · 20/01/2020 19:22

Do you have an alcohol problem OP?

Only I used to pour my Dads whisky away when I was a child, as I knew if he drank it he would become an aggressive wife beater.

Are you sure your DC havent just got rid of it to prevent you having it.

MimiLaRue · 20/01/2020 19:29

I said the same thing- its hilarious people are saying this. People risk their jobs for stupid things all the bloody time. People in this very thread have said their cleaners drink their alcohol and they turn a blind eye.

What they mean is THEY wouldnt risk their job for it. But that doesnt mean there aren't people out there stupid enough to do it

SunshineCake · 20/01/2020 19:30

More lack of reading skills. The bottle was unopened so it would have had to have smashed if it spilt when knocked over and then there works be none left never mind half a bottle.

BoomBoomsCousin · 20/01/2020 19:31

RTFT. The OP has said it was a sealed bottle.

cbr600rr · 20/01/2020 19:33

My son now 19 cant drink Gin as he hsd drank too much of it once, Only a few weeks ago did he admit it was my gin which he topped up with water.
It was your son who took it out to share with his mates a cleaner would be flat on the floor and unable to do anymore work that day.

BoomBoomsCousin · 20/01/2020 19:35

A 13 year old who has been in the house for a lot longer than the last few days, hasn’t shown any inclination towards alcohol and hasn’t had any real opportunity to get drunk unnoticed or share it with friends v. a new person who had an opportunity at just the point this incident happened.

Not really naive at all to think there is a high chance it’s the new person.

MrMeSeeks · 20/01/2020 19:37

think the OP would notice if her 13 yo ds had drunk half a bottle of gin over a few days! I'm far from naïve about teenagers - I've taught them for 20 years and have one of my own, but I wouldn't assume it was your ds. You know your own child, OP

Haha my parents never knew i went out drinking!

GabsAlot · 20/01/2020 19:38

Couldnt disagree more that kids wont try gin-its the new in drink especially pink gin its sweeter

i took swigs out of my parents alcohol when i was 13

SetTheScene · 20/01/2020 19:39

As a self employed cleaner myself, I'm genuinely Shock at how many posters here continue to use a cleaner who drinks their alcohol!

I love a gin, but I daren't help myself to even a coffee. A glass of water if I'm really that thirsty, but only if I've gone through my own bottle of water I take with me.

I love my job, suits my lifestyle, I'm bloody good at it and chose to give up a more 'professional' career to do it. But I live in fear of being accused of theft or of just being a cheeky fucker who "drinks too much of our nice coffee / eats all our posh biscuits" not meant for the lowly cleaner. I take absolutely nothing unless its explicitly offered to me as the stigma of 'cleaners are obviously no more than uneducated poverty-stricken amoral thieves and beggars' is still very much an attitude held by many.

I'm a good cleaner and a lovely person, it never occurred to me I could pour myself a g&t or two from my clients booze cupboards and they wouldn't mind! Could make my career change to a happy scrubber even more fulfilling!!! GinWineGrin

othervoicesotherrooms · 20/01/2020 19:39

I am definitely not the type of parent to swear that their child wouldn’t do certain things, but I am certain it wasn’t my 13 year old.

I'd place money on it being the 13 year old. If he didn't drink it himself, he nicked it and his friends did! Grin

Surely you would be able to tell if a 13 year old had been on the booze !

C8H10N4O2 · 20/01/2020 19:40

Nope, it's legal, you don't have to inform them. Just Google it for heaven's sake, if you're not sure!

Good luck citing Google to the Information Commisioner.

Palaver1 · 20/01/2020 19:40

Our au pair drank our rum.It was an unopened bottle.none of us drink my children had gone on hoildays and this bottle was given to us during the time.I put it away to give to my uncle whom I knew would appreciate it.It was quarter gone I just said to the au pair that it was mean of her to open and consume alcohol that was not hers fortunately she had just about finished her time with us ,this aside she was a lovely girl and still keeps in touch over 10 years after.

SinisterSparkle · 20/01/2020 19:50

I have a 12 year old and a 15 year old and if I have a drink they will cheekily ask for a taste but would never go and take/sneak it for themselves .
I actually dont think it was her sons or the cleaner I've had a bottle of pink gin 70cl and honestly the bottles are big but you don't get much in them half a bottle is about 2/3 doubles I've gone for a drink and though damn! Have I drank half the bottle already I've only had a couple. You could also drink those 2/3 doubles and not be pissed or even tipsy. And I'm a lightweight
