Help- cleaner drank my gin!

Hi all,
I’m new to mumsnet, but would really love some advice!

I’ve just signed up to a cleaning company and had my first clean, which I was thrilled about.
Then I noticed that half of my bottle of pink drink has gone!
I only got the bottle given to me as a gift last week from my sister in law.
My Dh doesn’t drink and I have my two ds in the house.
It was the cleaner definitely!
The company have been awful at getting back to me and sent me a poor email saying she said she didn’t drink it Hmm and was too early in the morning.

I feel really gutted and not sure how to move forward or get some sort of justice!!

WelshRach33 · 20/01/2020 18:19

No one drunk it OP!
Someone knocked it over, probably younger son.

5ilverLining · 20/01/2020 18:19

It was most definitely your son, why would the cleaner jeopardise her job for a bottle of pink gin.

BoomBoomsCousin · 20/01/2020 18:20

I would almost certainly have done the same as you, OP.

You don’t have to allow/invite someone you suspect of nicking alcohol off you into your home - even if you don’t have proof. It’s not reasonable to expect you to launch an investigation against the cleaner who has been there once, leave that for her employer if they think it appropriate (e.g. if you aren’t the first client to have raised concerns about missing alcohol in a house she has cleaned at or if a higher number of clients than usual cancel after she cleans their homes).

It might have been your DS, yes. But you have been thoughtful about why you don’t think it’s him. Coming to that conclusion isn’t an indication of denial since it’s reasonably well founded.

Obviously you can’t know what happened. You can only make your best guess and move on from there. YANBU to have done so.

Katinski · 20/01/2020 18:22

Bendy the top shelves of newsagents bear (bare? see what I did there)witness to the fact that mags are still popular, particularly among the lads. How tall is yours, OP?

DuckonaBike · 20/01/2020 18:22

Has nobody accused the 7 year old yet? He could easily see a pretty pink drink, pour a glass, then realise it tastes disgusting (to a 7 year old) and chuck it away. If he has even a vague idea that this is Mummy's special drink then he might keep quiet. And if he hasn't then he might just not mention it. Does he ever help himself to (age appropriate) drinks?

Jeeperscreepers69 · 20/01/2020 18:24

2 sons mmmmmm i wonder who drank the gin. 🤣🤣🤣 Dont reckon the cleaner would risk loosing her job over a bit of pink gin....

clarehhh · 20/01/2020 18:24

13 year old sneaked it into another bottle for a party maybe? My daughter 25 just admitted this year she used to do that!

SoupDragon · 20/01/2020 18:28

Why do you lot always have to argue against the OP'S?

It's called having a different opinion due to different experiences. Obviously.

Swatsup · 20/01/2020 18:28

Not read the whole thread but where I live it’s very normal for people to have cameras in the house. Sometimes hidden sometimes not so they can watch the pets during the day. The cleaners would not have drunk your gin and are probably laughing at how much you trust your kids.

Carriecakes80 · 20/01/2020 18:30

Lol I was the goody goody too when I was younger, and I went through everything, even siphoned some off to sell to friends, I was 11! My parents would have never believed the amount of cherry brady mixed with whisky that I had with lemonade, blooming lovely that was, drinking that whilst upstairs watching Home & Away! My mum used to blame my Dad! lol x

I would have a word with your 13 yr old! xx

Alpacathebag · 20/01/2020 18:34

Have you asked the 7yr old if they were playing with it? Pink gin looks like a pretty “potion” (as my friend’s 6yr old told me when we had pink gin) in nice bottles, maybe they were playing and poured some away?

misty85 · 20/01/2020 18:35

I’ll do your housework for a wee gin 🧼
I’d get tore into the chores 😅

My brother and I used to swig the whisky and top up with water. We both point blank denied it when accused by parents. We didn't have a cleaner that could be blamed.

RockinHippy · 20/01/2020 18:38

I've a funny, that'll teach you one.

My 13 yo self siphoned off & topped up drinks from a presentation pack of whiskies my dad was given. Years later this was given to me as an heirloom. Apparently untouched, it was now valuable. Only thanks to my 13 yo gut if a self, it wasn't untouched

silencebeforethebleeps · 20/01/2020 18:39

Depending on where in the house the bottle was kept, it is not entirely implausible that the contents might have been used for cleaning purposes. My FiL is teetotal but keeps a bottle of vodka in the house for tough stains. Using half a bottle in one go would be a bit excessive though.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/01/2020 18:42

plastic bottle? Novice! Best practice is to decant into a coffee jar or similar wide necked jar...easier for adding mixers and swiggability

Dorosomethingbeautiful · 20/01/2020 18:43

So it is okay to think the 13 year old son drank the gin and not the cleaner? 🤷🏻‍♀️

user1492450936 · 20/01/2020 18:45

I blamed my 14 year old son when levels in spirits bottles descended regularly, and bottles of wine disappeared - it was my cleaner decanting spirits and taking them home

Gaylesy14 · 20/01/2020 18:51

Oh poor u, imagine the absolute cheek a cleaner who's mouthed a bitta pink gin, or your son, or you, yourself... Such a first world problem. Anyway pink gin is rotten and common

VerbenaGirl · 20/01/2020 18:53

Oooh! This is like an Agatha Christie....

SoupDragon · 20/01/2020 18:56

So it is okay to think the 13 year old son drank the gin and not the cleaner?

The point is that the cleaner has been blamed and her employer told. People are simply pointing out that there is another suspect.

Lincolnfield · 20/01/2020 18:56

Simple answer. Lock up your booze and clean your own house! It could be the cleaner, it could be your son. It’s half a bottle of gin for god’s sake!

happyjack12 · 20/01/2020 18:59

Highonpotandused · 20/01/2020 19:04

How can one move forward and continue with the same cleaner

You can't move forward with the same agency let alone the same cleaner!

Glad you have someone else now.
